As collectors, our focus for Wonder Festival is obviously on the things that you can, you know, actually buy. But at the event, purchasable PVC figures are outnumbered pretty substantially by garage kits. We of course brought you our usual before-event roundup, but it’s time to take a look at all the goodies that were out and about that day!
The quality ranges from amazing to god-awful, so we tried to bring you the cream of the crop. Though I will admit, quite a few in this gallery are just here because of how odd they are. Shirtless Gilgamesh? Girl getting (happily) eaten by a shark? Cat on a motorcycle? Check ’em out and tons more below the jump!
If you’re ever feeling sad and blue, I have a solution that will cheer you right up: Bananya. It’s literally just an anime about cats that live in bananas. Or cats that are also bananas? A little unclear on the biology of these critters, but that’s not really what we should focus on. We should focus on how FREAKING ADORABLE they are.
Funko is literally the last company I would expect to make Bananya merch, but here we are. With some perfect (and huge! these guys are bigger than life size) plushes of the main kitters. I want them all.
Are Square-Enix’s DC figures a little too strange for you? Well don’t worry, friends, the Marvel line is here to save the day! Just kidding, they are pretty strange too. Unless, you know, futuristic gladiator Wolverine is a totally normal thing I’ve somehow missed out on. At least Doctor Strange looks pretty true to form?
I will admit, Magneto’s scrap metal cape is absolutely amazing, and kind of ingenious. Could I do without the 6-pack armor? Yeah, maybe. But I want a metal cape of my own (that doesn’t weigh 6 tons, please).
Given all of the “is the Ghost in the Shell movie racist because ScarJo is in it even though the original creator wanted her?!” nonsense surrounding the American GitS, it’s hard to remember that yes, it’s actually coming out soon and of course there will be a ton of merchandise. It’ll be interesting to see if any Japanese PVC companies take it on (ArtFX+, maybe?) but for now we have a surprise POP line from Funko.
There are 3 characters in it (so far): Major, Geisha, and Batou. I don’t remember ScarJo’s hair being that blue-tipped in the 97 previews I’ve seen, but let’s just roll with it. I sure hope they make a Geisha with the alternate head-explody face!
Square-Enix’s DC line has always been a head-scratcher for me. The designs, from the first ones they put out to the Tetsuya Nomura designs, are so very strange and out-there. Maybe that’s the appeal! But they’re really pushing the boundary of “what even am I looking at” with their new Harley Quinn & The Joker. Because these seemingly normal Play-Arts Kai transform into… robot Harley and robot Joker. Wat.
The Joker has some strange exo-suit going on and Harley looks like an extra from Bubblegum Crisis. I… I kind of love it. It’s just SO weird, and the Joker has about 20 thousand extra heads. Part of me is like “why” and the other part is all “think of the toy photography opportunities!!”
It’s time to accelerate!
Funko’s Overwatch line has certainly been successful, but everyone wants their main to be released ASAP. Which is a problem when there’s, like, two dozen characters. But they’re working as fast as they can! Wave 2 was on display at Toy Fair, and it includes D.Va (in mech), Lucio, Mei, McCree, Symmetra, and Reinhardt. I’m still sad there is no tiny Bastion, but perhaps wave 3 will finally fill my robot dreams.
Sometimes I wonder to myself, “what the hell is going on with the Kingdom Hearts franchise?” 2 came out over 10 years ago, and it’s probably going to be a while before we get 3 (or even any info on a release date, sigh). Yet there are multiple side games with bizarre names like Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary passage- and Dream Drop Distance. Who comes up with these? Are they given LSD and locked in a room where Animal Collective plays nonstop until the come up with a sufficiently trippy title? Truly a mystery.
Square-Enix had 2 Play-Arts from the franchise on display: Sora from KHIII (toys before game seems to be so common nowadays), and Aqua from Birth by Sleep. There’s also some amazingly cute vinyl figures of the various cute/evil critters that populate the world. Who doesn’t want a tiny Heartless lurking around their apartment?
Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around those classic late 90’s Nickelodeon shows. My dad and I can still sing the ‘Reptar on Ice’ song from memory and often make jokes about the lamp from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. Good times. It seems like they have been a little neglected merch-wise, so I was very surprised to see figures from them at Funko’s booth!
We have, of course, Rugrats (Reptar totally steals the show), Catdog, and Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm from Real Monsters. I want Oblina so bad guys. I wonder if they’ll make a few more, like maybe some from Angry Beavers or Doug? Qualiman please.
It’s no secret that the world of statues is not exactly my bread & butter. I usually find them way out of budget and not quite as detailed as the (much cheaper) PVC counterparts. But there’s one line I have always adored: DC’s Bombshells! They’re just so campy in the best way, and they always pull out great & creative sculpts for it.
This year they had quite a few out and about. Including the biggest announcement so far: Aquaman. That’s right, we now have male Bombshells! Sexism is over, because we can now get topless dudes with our scantily clad ladies. Batman and Nightwing next please. They also had Zatanna, Harley Quinn, Vixen, Jesse Quick (the Flash), and Starfire out on display. Check them all out after the jump!
Final Fantasy used to be my gaming lifeblood. I have sunk so many hundreds of hours into those games, and they were absolutely my most anticipated releases. Until XIII, which I have tried 3 times to get into. Like literally, I’ve restarted the game 3 times hoping to feel the spark. Nada. So while I pre-ordered XV, I still haven’t touched it. Basically at this point I’m just waiting patiently for the XII remaster, sigh. At least I have my Fran Play-Arts to keep me company!
They had quite a few Play-Arts Kai from the FF world at Toy Fair (though sadly none from World of Final Fantasy, how cute would those be?). There’s Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, Nyx Ulric, and Cindy Aurum from XV, and Cloud & Barret from VII. Then there’s what I am all about: plushes! Chocobos to fill the void in your heart, Moogles to make you happy. And a bonus slime from Dragon Quest, to go with the 5 million you probably already own if you’re anything like me.
