One of the biggest announcements at last Wonder Festival was the reveal of a Kylo Ren Nendoroid from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I knew we’d be seeing some merchandise from it at the event, but I thought for sure Finn and Rey would be up first. Thankfully it’s the angsty little cinnamon roll who seems to be the most popular merch-wise!
I assumed there’d be some fuss and buss (aka a million Kahotan posts) before Kylo went live, but he’s already up for order! And he comes with some cool accessories: his janky lightsaber, the bolt he stops in mid-air, Vader’s destroyed helmet, and of course an angry lil Adam Driver face. D’aww! Release date is June and he retails for ¥5,500.
At the tail end of last year, Good Smile Company unveiled the art for Racing Miku 2017 which is designed by Tony Taka. I find myself ordering less and less every month and in fact it takes a lot for any figure to interest me now, but I am always such a sucker for the Racing Miku line… and this year looks like it will be no exception! Tony Taka, Miku, butterfly wings, soft pastel colors? Yes please.
Of course we don’t just get the figure: there’s a figma and Nendoroid too! This might actually be the first time Tony’s art has been on a Nendoroid, since I can’t think of a single other. GSC was never on the Shining World hype train, after all. But oh my god does his style look adorable all chibi and fat! I hope that, unlike Snow Miku, they keep all the detail in her outfit because this could be a really spectacular Nendoroid.

The Pokemon Center in Japan always has amazing toys and merchandise that the rest of the world can only dream of owning. Their ‘Secret Teams’ line of figures is definitely something I’m sure every fan would snatch up if they had the chance: Pikachu in the outfits of every villainous team from the games! That Team Skull Pika is particularly adorable, though I am very partial to Flare.
Of course these are only available in the Pokemon Center, but there’s hope for those of us who don’t live in Japan. These cuties are easily available on auction sites like Yahoo Japan, and reseller Pokevault has the whole trading figure line up (for a price), along with plushes, stickers, and other assorted evil!Pika goodies. Gotta catch em all?
So far, Stronger’s Maiko Vocaloid line has been totally on point. Their Miku, who just came out last month, was breathtakingly gorgeous, and they followed it up with Meiko & Kaito. We found out last year that Luka would be the next to join in, and of course her art is as pretty as you’d expect.
Now she’s all sculpted and even nicer than what I imagined! The branch is so elaborate… and will take up a lot of shelf space, but if she’s even half as nice as the finished Miku it’s totally worth it. Luka is my favorite Vocaloid so it’s great to see her getting so much love recently. I expect Rin & Len to follow shortly!
Winter Wonder Festival is about a month away, which means it’s time for some reveals of the exclusives companies will be bringing to the event! And of course GSC is first up (and has more than anyone else). There’s a lot, so let’s dive right in! The new Snow Miku 2017 merchandise will be there: both the Nendoroid (¥5,500) and figma (¥6,00). I love the sleepy face of the Nendo, but I still wish there was more detail on the dress. We’ll also have Nendoroid Gudako from Fate/Grand Order (¥4,500) who has an amazing faceplate.
Keeping with the Fate theme is figma Saber Lily (¥4,000) in her short dress. There are two KanColle Nendoroids: Zuikaku Kai (¥5,000) and Musashi (¥7,800). Ouch on Musashi’s price! Phat! Company will have a Medicchu set of Viral & Mary from Granblue Fantasy (¥6,000), and there will also be a scaled Wonda-chan from Kaiyodo (¥6,800). All of these will be available at the event and also online right after it has ended!
A new year means new toys! And Javier Jiménez, creator of Wananeko and Baby Wananeko, is starting 2017 off on a very good note for those of us who like both cats and toys. Which is basically all of humanity, right?
This Sunday, a super-limited run of 5 hand-painted Baby Wananekos will go up in the StickUp Monsters store. Not only are these guys adorable, but by buying one you help support an awesome cause! All proceeds will go to Maullidos Invisibles, a cat welfare organization in Granada. So you get a toy kitty and help out real-life strays and sick cats! All for a mere $35. What could be better?
For reasons I don’t fully understand, I am a huge sucker for the Race Queens figure genre. They’re just so cute! I mean, I don’t like watching actual car racing, and the outfits don’t exactly suit my everyday style, so who knows what it is. But I am drawn to them like a moth to the flame. And I was particularly excited when Stronger showed off a racing Saber (which is now painted and in the gallery!).
But they’re not just doing Saber. And unlike 99% of companies, the next girl is not going to be another Saber variant (though I have no doubt they’ll get to that). It’s Rin! Finally, the best girl is getting some love. I adore her pose: it’s so cute and it looks like they actually put in some effort into how it’ll look paired with Saber.

I think we can all agree that 2016 sucked. But the year is almost at an end, which means a fresh start for all of us! And a fresh start for yearly figure lines, too. Usually we have to wait until Wonder Festival for the new Racing Miku, but GSC feels so bad for all of us they’re giving us a little taste of the 2017 design already.
While I was quite smitten by 2016’s figure, I am even more excited for 2017’s. Because it’s Tony Taka!! Finally, dreams do come true. And it’s not just any Racing Miku, it’s a FANCY FAIRY RACING MIKU. 2017 can’t come fast enough.

It really is a great time to be a Spice & Wolf fan. Her Kotobukiya figure just got a re-release, we have that Nendoroid, and wedding Holo. But that’s not enough: no, we need all we can get of this adorable wolf girl. This time around it’s another scaled figure announcement, this time from Revolve!
We have no word on what art she’ll be based on, but we do know it’s a collaboration with Juu Ayakura, the series illustrator. Does this mean it will be something totally new? Or based on a classic S&W piece of art? Only time will tell!
Did you think that Griffon Enterprises had gone the way of the dinosaurs (and Taki Corp)? So did everyone else. It’s been ages since they actually did anything, and many of their in-production figures (like the damn goldfish action figure I had on order for 2 years!!) were simply cancelled or left in limbo. But apparently they were just hibernating, because they’re back with totally new branding!
They showed off two new lines, which really just seems like a way of re-branding their image. The first, Bishojo Tairiku, is their art-based 18+ line (kind of like what Native and AlphaMax does), featuring art by Kizuki Aruchu, Koutaro, Watanabe Yoshihiro, and more! The second, Grand Toys, features more traditional licenses like Cutie Honey, Super Sonico, Highschool DxD, and Silent Möbius. They’ve also revived a few Date A Live and Rozen Maiden figures I thought were long gone! I know Griffon has been a spotty company but they’ve made quite a few very nice figures, so I hope this works out well for them.
