As you may know, we here at Plastikitty don’t usually do individual pre-order posts unless it’s for an exclusive. However, we occasionally must make an exception, and any figure that gets fans THIS riled up is deserving of its own discussion! Kotobukiya has been working on their Yu-Gi-Oh line for a while now, first with Dark Magician Girl, then Yugi, followed by Kaiba and Dark Magician. Joey, Bakura and Marik have been announced as well. Dark Magician showed up sculpted at WonFest, and of course everyone assumed he’d get his anime colorway–however, they decided to go with a slightly refined version of his card design (that was also used in the original Toei animation). I like this color scheme: if you look at the shot of DMG, Yugi and DM in the gallery, I think the blue makes him “fit in” more. Given his big pose, the purple might make him pop a little too much.
However, many people are not pleased with this decision. It seems to be quite polarizing: some people love it (myself included), other are… well, furious. If you check their Facebook page it’s swarmed with comments hoping for a recolor, Personally, I think it’s rather interesting that figure collecting can get people SO upset, but on the other hand it’s a lot of money (though his retail is only ¥7,800 for a 12″ tall figure) and collectors deserve the best for what they pay. Well, I don’t think they will be doing a repaint, but a recolor is always possible and honestly I think might have been planned from the get-go since Yugi got one. For those of you that like this creepy magician he’ll be released in January–for the rest, well, let’s hope you get your recolor! I wouldn’t mind having two Dark Magicians…

I like the coloring of his outfit as well. The only thing that has me scratching my head is the choice of color for his skin. Was his skin ever blue? Did I just completely miss something, somewhere…
He does fit in better with Yugi, and with all the dark blue they make the DMG stand out, which could be a plus or a minus
The Dark Magician’s original card art has this color scheme, even the skin color.
I agree the coloring fits really well with yugi, I’m also color blind so I didn’t see the color difference at all lol
also I forgot to mention but the original card color is this figure. this figure is exactly like the original card. however people are getting mad because the anime changed the coloring to purple and the figure isn’t. So really This figure is true to the original.
I’d be fine with the purple version, I’m really happy about this curveball that Koto has thrown at us. Overall, I think the original DM color goes better with Yugi and DMG.
I love everything version of the Dark Magician even the “evil” one with tanned skin and a maroon color scheme. DM is badass no matter what color.
I’d be fine with 3 colorways of DM, the more the better! And then maybe Magician of Black Chaos…
Dark Magician of Chaos would be outright awesome. Now if they threw in the Black Luster Soldier, I’d be very happy.
Even though I don’t hate this color scheme, when putting the three (Yugi, DMG and DM) together, it just looks kind of odd. With just Yugi and DM it might look okay, but with all three… I’d rather see the purple, I think.
As someone who watched five seasons of the anime and collected YGO cards (DM & DMG included) for 3-4 years, I can’t help but be disappointed with the color of DM.
