Plastikitty Review: Kotobukiya’s 1/7 DC Bishoujo Huntress

Kotobukiya Huntress Review Header

As you may know by now, the Huntress is my absolute favorite comic character. She’s kickass, doesn’t take shit from anyone, and shoots people with crossbows. I know, right? So of course I was over the moon when she got added to Kotobukiya’s Bishoujo line, and at SDCC I fell in love with this figure. Yes, even with the dreaded belly window. So how did the final product turn out? Hit the jump and let’s see!

Huntress’ box is the standard Bishoujo fare. On the back, though, it says that this is Helena Wayne. Yet, this is an outfit worn by Helena Bertinelli! Let me just say that while both Helenas are the Huntress I HATE what DC has done to her in the New 52 (I’d burn the last few pages of their Huntress mini if I could) so in my headcanon this is Helena Wayne in her Birds of Prey days and no one can convince me otherwise.

Like most Bishes she requires pretty much zero assembly, and is screwed into the base. Oh, you do have to get her pole in though, which is a pretty tight fit-however you can bend her fingers, making it a lot simpler to accomplish!

Helena’s pose displays her cocky personality quite well. She’s got one leg up and her hips nicely angled: one of my favorite aspects of the character is that while she’s certainly sexualized (what comic character isn’t?) her sexuality is dealt with in a remarkably mature way (at least when she’s being written by Gail Simone!). She’s not afraid to show off, and I think the pose Shunya Yamashita chose for her reflects that without verging into tacky territory.

I think it’s safe to say that after a rough patch, the Bishoujo faces have been getting better and better (case in point: Jaina). Huntress has Shunya’s signature thick eyelashes, though her face is mainly hidden by her mask. Personally, I think she has the best superhero mask: it’s just so bold and graphic! Plus, purple. And clear hair. So many things I love!

One qualm about this figure that I have is the belly window, which I dislike almost as much as Peeg’s boob window. It’s just pointless, but thankfully from most angles it’s totally covered up and not really noticeable. The second would be her boobs, which suffer from the unfortunate ‘boob sock’ effect where it looks like she’s been vacuumed into her suit. Plus, I think they’re significantly bigger than even her bustiest comic representation. But alas, that’s how Shunya chose to portray her.

As a member of the Bat Family, Huntress of course has a cape! It’s rippling in the wind here along with her hair, giving the effect that she’s standing on the edge of a building in Gotham, ready to kick ass. And can we talk about how delicious the shade of purple they used is? It’s edible!

Helena has never been scrawny, and thankfully they didn’t slim her down! Then again the Bishoujo line, at least with comic characters, is definitely not known for that! Shunya likes his women curvy, and Helena has some pretty substantial thighs.

My affectionate nickname for the Huntress is the Buttress, and of course this figure lives up to that!

Like the other Bishoujos who live in Gotham, Catwoman and Batgirl (review), Helena has a gargoyle base. Hers is a griffon, and is totally bitchin.

Nowadays you can’t have Huntress without Peeg (review), and here they are together! I think they collectively show the very best of what the Bishoujo line has to offer.

For a long time now, Ms. Marvel has held the title of my favorite Bishoujo. But Huntress has swept that up neatly! Of course I’m biased because she’s my favorite character, but isn’t that the point of the Bishoujo line anyway? Even if I didn’t adore the character she’d be high up based on the painting and sculpting alone.

Thanks as always to Stephen Donaldson for these shots! It’s fun that we’re able to shoot members of the Bat Family in actual Gotham. Speaking of DC, I wonder which girl will get the Bishoujo treatment next? I think Batwoman is a strong contender as is Lady Shiva based on their current popularity, but who I want to see is Black Canary. More Birds of Prey, please!
