Kotobukiya has been making Star Wars figures for a very long time, so it’s really no surprise that the female cast eventually joined the Bishoujo series! However, I think their first selection came as a bit of a shock–Jaina Solo, a character from the extended universe, rather than Princess Leia who I am sure was what everyone expected.
But her art was gorgeous, and the prototype definitely delivered. Even people dreaming of a slave bikini Bish seemed pleased with her! They also managed to keep her more, ah, clothed than many of the Marvel and DC girls, but would the final figure deliver to us a classy lightsaber-wielding lady? Hit the jump and let’s get started!
Jaina’s box is very different from the average Bishoujo–as you can see, she’s part of the ArtFX line as well and her box matches Kotobukiya’s other Star Wars figures. It’s a sleek black design, without the usual art that covers the Bish boxes.
Jaina comes in pieces like the other members of the ArtFX line, and it took some time to assemble her. Be very careful with the lightsaber, it’s attached by a thin peg and only a little bit of force is needed to get it in! I’m so used to just taking Bishes out and displaying them so Jaina provided a bit of a challenge. But in the end it only took about 10 minutes to fit everything together!
In my opinion, the face is probably the most important part of a figure. Shunya’s art seems hard to capture, but with Jaina they totally nailed it! She looks just like the art, from her full lashes to her gorgeously shaped lips. It may seem odd, but lips aren’t often something that manufacturers pay a whole lot of attention to (we often get “happy open circle mouth”) so Jaina’s well-defined ones definitely stand out. She’s just so pretty, in fact I think she might have the best face out of all the Bishes.
Jaina is *gasp* fully clothed, a rarity for the line since it mostly covers superheroines and girls from fighting games (who are certainly not known for their modest wardrobe). She’s got a simple white tanktop on and an orange jumpsuit hanging around her waist–a simple getup to be sure, but they’ve managed to sculpt in a ton of detail and keep it from being dull. Just look at all the folds on her shirt!
They’ve also given her a pretty realistic figure–she’s got normal sized breasts and her waist isn’t dramatically thin. In fact, she’s actually shaped like a real girl, with room for her organs and everything!
Her pants are really masterfully executed, they look almost real. Often the Bishoujo line has slightly simpler outfit sculpts to keep the prices low, but with Jaina they definitely went all out. The paint is also smooth and clean here, with the painted stitch-work coming out nice and crisp.
She comes with a lot of extra bits for display, including of course a lightsaber. They pulled off a cool floating effect like she’s tossing it up in the air, though as I mentioned earlier it’s secured with a small peg to her hand.
Jaina also comes with a helmet cocked on her hip, presumably so she can jump in a starfighter at a moment’s notice to go save the galaxy. I guess she takes after her dad in the piloting aspect!
This is as close as you’re gonna get to a butt shot with Jaina. She’s a classy dame, and keeps her rear end covered!
Her base is similar to the Tekken girls–you can swap out the insert either with the Star Wars logo or with a more complex design, though of course you have the option to leave it blank as well (or design your own!). It’s also nice and small, no bigger than it needs to be to keep her stable. Thank god the Bishoujos generally have small bases–ours are all grouped together, and it makes it quite easy to display them!
Jaina definitely shows off all the best aspects of the Bishoujo line: she’s got a gorgeous Shunya face, has a hint sex appeal without verging into ridiculousness, and manages to capture the essence of the character. Add in her pretty awesome paint work and quality control and it’s impossible to deny that she is one of the very best Bishoujos! Though Star Wars isn’t really my thing (I’m a Star Trek girl through and through) Jaina has quickly become one of my favorites in the line, and I can’t wait to see what they do with Mara Jade! Speaking of Star Trek… an Uhura Bishoujo would make me the happiest girl in the world.
Thanks to Stephen Donaldson as always for taking these shots, and also to our little assistant R2D2! All jedi pilots need a little robot buddy, and ours was more than happy to help.
