Plastikitty Review: Kotobukiya’s Bishoujo Tali’Zorah

KotoTaliReviewHeader

Tali is my favorite Mass Effect girl (though truly Wrex is #1 in my heart), so of course I’ve been dying for her Bishoujo. The announcement, which followed Bishoujos Liara and Commander Shepard (review), had me totally over the moon. Because who doesn’t want a purple, gas mask-wearing alien in their collection?

Her art and sculpt were released almost back to back and were followed shortly by pre-orders. I feel like I’ve been waiting ages for her, but it was actually a pretty quick turnaround–it just seems longer because I’ve been dreaming of her since we first found out about Liara. So does Tali live up to my expectations? Hit the jump and let’s find out!

Her box is the basic Bishoujo packaging: colors match the character’s theme, and there’s the original art.

Like most of the Bishoujos before her, Tali requires no assembly: just take her out of the box and you’re good to go!

It’s safe to say that Tali is very different from pretty much every Bish before her. For one, her face is totally masked and she doesn’t come with an alternate one. Plus she’s fully clothed, and not in head-to-toe latex or anything. Since Shunya’s main selling points tend to be his faces and sexy outfits, I was really curious to see if she would “read” as a Bishoujo in person.

Well, she does kind of have a face! There’s a basic sculpted one behind her mask with pretty indistinct features. It’s at once cool and a little spooky: the eyes catch the light very easily which makes them seem to glow. This wasn’t in the illustration at all and I really like that they added it: way more interesting than a totally frosted mask.

The pose is pretty basic but definitely fits the character. I mean, how weird would it be if she was striking a pose or jumping?

Tali might seem like she’s on the simpler side in terms of outfits, but there are tons of details here. Her hood and all of the purple material is embossed with a swirl pattern, which looks really great up close. The sculpting is crisp and detailed, with just enough folds and such to keep her outfit interesting without going overboard.

My favorite part of her outfit is the corset-like strap details on the back. They’re elegant and sexy without being too in-your-face: for the most part, Mass Effect’s costumes tend to be more on the practical side than the eye-candy side (with a few notable exceptions, of course). They’ve given her more dramatic body lines than in the game, but the suit itself hasn’t really been sexed up.

So let’s talk about the butt. It’s certainly not a feature I expected to shine when Tali was announced (especially since her art is fully facing forward) but they gave us this traditional Shunya detail in droves. I mean, look at it! Magnificent.

You can see that the black parts of her suit are also embossed, one with a grid pattern and one with a more mesh effect. In fact, every part but the straps has detailing like this.

I absolutely love her lil alien feet. They’re so cute, in a pretty creepy way. I wonder if it’s easier or harder to balance with toes like that?

Her base is a basic round disk of clear plastic. The art on it is actually a decal you can place inside, so if you want it to be just clear you can do that too, of course.

Or you could put the ME3 logo in the base! Actually, you could even make a custom insert pretty easily and do whatever you wanted with it. It’s a nice feature.

I’m very pleased with how Tali came out. It’s just the right mix of original character design and Bishoujo features–it still feels like Tali, just with a sexier Shunya-twist. If you want her, I’d suggest acting fast: she’s already sold out at several stores like AmiAmi and Hobby Search!

Thanks as always to Stpehen Donaldson for taking these pictures.
