SDCC 2011: Kotobukiya’s Marvel Comic Statues

Kotobukiya has quickly become one of the premier comic statue manufacturers over the last two years and for the biggest comic convention in the nation, they really brought the heat with their new Marvel announcements. Between continuing the X-Force line and starting up the Avengers line, there was quite a lot on hand and it really shows just how much sculptor Erick Sosa has grown.

The X-Force line was expanded with Warpath, Gambit, Magneto, and Archangel, all of which look amazing. Warpath, who received a few updates since Toy Fair, will be ready for September of this year for $199.99 and really shows off his powerful nature. Gambit, who will follow Warpath in October for $209.99 is also the next in the X-Men Danger Room Session Series, rather than the X-Force line in particular, and has a similar base to others such as Collossus and Psylocke before him. In the 1st quarter of 2012, we’ll be receiving the two newly shown off statues: Magneto and Archangel. Magneto comes with a second non-helmet head and has lots of magnetic items floating around one powerful pose making for one really badass figure of such an iconic character. Archangel, who is set for $229.99, features his giant metallic wings, which are quite shiny and metallic looking in person, and really is one impressive figure. Archangel’s size alone is so imposing that he just commands to be looked at, even if placed on a bottom shelf like at Kotobukiya’s booth.

Not to be overshadowed though is the equally amazing Avengers line, which is slated to begin in the 2nd quarter of 2012 and features Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man so far. Thor, whom was unpainted at Toy Fair, has now been tweaked a little in his face and hands and is also fully painted and looking great. The swooshing cape and outstretched arm convey so much motion for a static figure and really bring this piece to another level. Captain America looks great in his red, white, and blue color scheme and will feature a non-masked swappable head as well. Last, but not least, Iron Man will also feature a swappable non-masked head and his metallic suit comes across amazingly via the paint job.

There were also many other statues that have been released or will be released shortly on display, and judging from the completely sold out booth at the end of the convention, these all look like they will follow suit and be hot sellers. I personally can’t wait to see more of all of these, but for now, we’ll just have to live with what we have in the gallery below.
