1/6 Archive

  • I have a confession, guys: I am really superhero’d out. There are just SO MANY tv shows and movies (and novels now too apparently) based on the DC and Marvel worlds. I’ve experienced overload and now it’s hard to work up the energy to care about them. But there is one big, sparkling exception to that: Guardians of the Galaxy. Do you know how excited I am for Vol 2? VERY EXCITED. So of course I was hella pumped at the reveal of a Star-Lord ArtFX statue at Toy Fair. Especially because he’s perfect. They absolutely nailed the face, and the detail on the outfit is astounding. And he’s a generous 1/6 scale, so definitely a centerpiece kind of figure. Plus BABY GROOT. It just couldn’t get any better. Unless, of course, they made matching statues of the rest of the cast…

  • I have always loved horror as a genre. It started with childhood fun (Goosebumps, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Are You Afraid of the Dark, etc) and has progressed to the point where I now have a list of my favorite deaths in horror movies (barbed wire in Suspiria #1). So suffice to say, I really love horror movie figures too. Like this giant Jason Voorhees! Think of all the fun you could have with this lil guy. Picture this: you have guests over, they’re staying in your fancy guest bedroom. You sneak in during the night and leave Jason on the bedside table so they wake up to pure horror. Haha, fun times! But anyway, what’s your favorite horror movie death?

  • I am sure that you, fair reader, are hyped as shit for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Just like every human on earth. I mean, it’s months away. Mere months away. But in the meantime, we can tide ourselves over with this amazing Star-Lord ArtFX that Kotobukiya unveiled at Toy Fair. This 1/6 scale statue is so incredibly impressive in person. Just look at that likeness! The detail is mindblowing. And he comes with bby Groot, aww. They hope to make Groot magnetic so that he can easily be removed & re-positioned. His release date is set for May, so orders should open very soon! It should look pretty cool next to their Rocket Raccoon, even if the scales don’t perfectly match.

  • When I was young, Trigun was certainly one of the first anime to hit success in the US. I expected, of course, to see a lot of merchandise from it: but like much from that era, there’s barely any out there. Thankfully a lot of the older licenses have loosened up recently, and that golden age of anime is finally getting the figure-respect it deserves. We have seen some Trigun figures from Kotobukiya, but sadly that’s about it… until now! A company with the name (brace yourselves) Fullcock is making a polystone statue of Vash the Stampede. They showed off the art he’ll be based on, but already have a price and scale (1/6 for ¥15,800) so I assume the reveal will be soon since he’s scheduled for a 2016 release. Cutting it a little close there, Fullcock! [via Fullcock]

  • Ahh, Thanos. That loveable old jerk. We saw him unveiled at Toy Fair, but we couldn’t resist taking a closer look at this baddie. The sculpt, which is of course by Erick Sosa, is absolutely insane. The level of detail! Just look at all the wrinkles on his face. I mean, don’t tell Thanos I think he’s wrinkly. But he sure is. I think the question we all have is… will they do the storyline with Death in the movies? But more relative to the topic at hand, when is Thanos hitting stores? Since this was the very first time he was shown off, I think we can expect another month+ before pre-orders and probably a Fall release.

  • Kotobukiya’s butterfly sisters Daisy and Annabell have been some of my favorite figures from the past few years. They’re huge (1/6 scale!), beautifully sculpted, super colorful, and full of clear PVC. Plus, illustrated by Tony Taka! What’s not to love? I was really excited when they announced the third sister, though I will admit that her color palette is my least-favorite of the three. I’m more drawn to cool colors so the super warm scheme is a bit different from what I’m usually drawn to. But she looks so beautiful with the other two! I think her face is the cutest of the three, and she definitely seems the most… young? Definitely more cutesy and carefree than the other ones! Freesia should go up for order this week. • I remember being absolutely shocked when Chara-Ani unveiled their sculpt of Kohane Koishikawa, the gorgeous angel based on a Oyari Ashito illustration. I mean, Chara-Ani is a middle of the road to terrible company, depending on the release, and Kohane’s sculpt was just angelic perfection. So detailed, so true to Oyari’s style, so freaking beautiful! But I didn’t get my hopes up, because this is Chara-Ani we’re talking about. Surprisingly, the paint looks… really good?! Soft, delicate, nicely shaded and detailed. This is definitely a higher quality product than what they usually produce, though sadly she’s not as perfect as I had hoped: the seam line on the side of her head is quite evident, and the pole-base is just distractingly weird. Why isn’t it clear? But I am such a sucker for wings, I’ll probably take my chances and order her. Plus, she’s 1/6, which is one of my favorite sizes! [via Dengeki]

  • Kotobukiya’s Fine Arts statue line used to be the main focus of their comic lineup, but with the rising popularity (and cheap prices) of the ArtFX+ we’ve seen less and less of them. But don’t worry, it hasn’t died out! They’re just going at a slow and steady pace. And next up? Thanos! Given his importance in the Marvel movie universe it was really only a matter of time before we got an Eric Sosa take on him, and it looks fantastic.

  • Did you think that Ano Natsu de Matteru figures were so last year? That we wouldn’t see any more? Well, who could blame you. But we have one straggler before the show sinks into figure-obscurity, and of course it’s from Alter aka “the really slow company that doesn’t pay attention to trends.” They actually already made one figure of Kanna (in a pretty similar pose, no less), but last MegaHobby another sculpt for her showed up! Like the first one, this is 1/6 scale, but instead of going to school she’s now going to the pool! This is the perfect time to release a swimsuit figure–as summer is fading fast and we’re all getting a little nostalgic for it. Except in NY, where it’s still hot as hell and I wish summer would leave me alone. Anyway, Kanna is looking pretty cute–though I find the closeup shots of her non-existent butt pretty hilarious. Orders open tonight! [via Alter’s Blog]

  • Kotobukiya had a lot to show us at Summer Wonder Festival, but of course I was most excited for the Tony-related products. And today, we’re taking a closer look at two of them! The first is Kirika Towa Aruma from Shining Resonance. After the limited (and disappointing) AlphaMax version of her, I’m so happy anther company is taking her on. It actually seems like she’s painted, though we are only getting a teaser here… perhaps orders will start soon? Then we have the third butterfly sister, Freesia, who follows Daisy-chan and Annabelle. This is a line I’ve been smitten with since the beginning, and Freesia’s color palette is quite different than her sisters’ so I think they’ll look great together! Freesia’s sculpt looks a little cleaner than what we saw at WonFest, but no painted updates yet. In fact, Koto hasn’t put up a ton of non-Bishoujo figures since the event, I wonder when we’ll start seeing this stuff in shops! [via Kotobukiya’s Blog]
