  • For fans of Street Fighter’s Ibuki, it’s been a long wait for her Bishoujo version. She was announced a little over a year ago, and then it was all quiet on the eastern front. No painted version, not even a teaser of the sculpt! Which is pretty uncommon in the Bishoujo line, since it tends to move rapidly along. Thankfully, her painted version appeared at Wonder Festival and SDCC. And now she’s all ready for orders! And, like we thought, there will be two versions: the standard, and a special masked face one that’s exclusive to Kotobukiya’s online shop. Right now it’s only on their Japanese one but if she’s anything like the other exclusives, expect her to go up on the US shop very soon (which means no proxy fees!). I really prefer the masked face, so I’m hoping she makes and overseas appearance. [UPDATE] Masked Ibuki is indeed available on KotoUS! Pre-Order At: HLJ | AmiAmi

  • I have finally come to terms with the fact that Bishoujo Wonder Girl is not going to be Donna Troy. I’ve come to terms with it, and even though I really want sparkly space-pants in my life I’m moving on. It’s been a hard road, but here we are. With Cassie Sandsmark! I have to say, I was not at all won over by her initial promotional shots but I think Cassie looks miles better here. The face is much crisper and less childish, and the detailing on her pants & outfit look great. What do you guys think about Wonder Girl?  [Photos courtesy of our SDCC correspondent, Chris Hansbrough of Nine Twilights]

  • Spider Gwen is one of Marvel’s most currently popular characters, so of course she’s taking the figure world by storm. Kotobukiya alone is doing both an ArtFX+ and a Bishoujo version of her! Of course my heart lies with the Bishoujo line so that’s what I am personally most excited for. Her unmasked version was out and about at SDCC, looking as cute as ever. I do prefer the mask on (just because the hood lining is so striking) but I love the more cutesy, girlie pose and style they went with for her. She’s going to look adorable with the other young Marvel heroines like Squirrel Girl! [Photos courtesy of our SDCC correspondent, Chris Hansbrough of Nine Twilights]

  • This may seem sacrilegious, but I’ve never been a huge Star Wars fan. I was Team Trek as a kid, and that has definitely carried into adulthood. However, I think The Force Awakens has swayed me at least a little bit and I am now straight Kylo Ren trash. I want all the figures of him right now. And while he’s gotten a lot recently, I was really praying for Kotobukiya to make him in the ArtFX line which is a very decent 1/7 scale. Well, dreams do come true! He was revealed at San Diego Comic Con and we got to take a super-detailed look at my evil boo. There are so many beautiful details here, from the flowing clothing to all those snowy patches. Definitely feels like a scene from the movie come to life. I wonder if he’ll have an unmasked head… and if Finn & Rey will be joining the line. Or BB-8, please. • I’ve really done a 180 on Bishoujo Harley Quinn version 2 since her announcement. At first I was very disappointed in the choice of outfit, but the amazing sculpt quickly won me over. Now, I think it’s safe to say she might be one of my very-favorite Bishoujos… and she’s not even out yet! At SDCC we got to take another up-close look at her. We also found out that there will be an exclusive NYCC version of her with the classic black & red color palette, a masked face, and a new weapon (gun instead of hammer). I definitely need them both! • I’ve been smitten with Kotobukiya’s Thor & Loki Bishoujos since we first saw the art at Toy Fair. I mean, evil girls are my jam so I was of course in love with Loki in particular. We got the sculpt reveal just a few days ago, and I still wasn’t sure how I felt about Thor. Well, after seeing more detail shots I can safely say that while Loki is still #1 babe, Thor is definitely growing on me. It’s really the cape that I love: the vibrant red & detailed sculpt make it look like real fabric, a hard feat to pull off. We got to take a super-detailed behind the glass look at both of these beauties at SDCC, so check out the gallery below! • I was over the moon when Good Smile Company announced a scaled figure of Sakura. One of my favorite anime heroines in the crazy detail we’ve come to expect from GSC? Yes please. I was cautiously optimistic about the sculpt: it looked great, but the concept art had some strange color choices. I wanted to pass judgment only when we’d seen the finished piece. Well she was at Anime Expo so that time has arrived! And let’s just pray the lighting there was really bad because I am not wowed by this. The colors look as weird as I imagined, and the totally clear wings are an… odd choice. If they were even slightly tinted I think they’d look less cheap. But I know event lighting is usually just terrible so I am still hopeful that the official shots will be stunning! [via mfc]

  • I’ve been cautiously optimistic for Kotobukiya’s Edward Scissorhands Horror Bishoujo since the art was first revealed. While it seems totally wacky, moreso even than Freddy & Jason, the art was just really cool and interesting-looking. Plus, we don’t really have any gloomy goth Bishoujos (or figures in general let’s be honest) so I was anticipating a real change of pace for the line. Well, she’s fully sculpted and painted, and I am totally blown away. I mean, the detail level is just… woah. Look at how beautiful and moody her face is! All those belts and buckles! This is definitely one of the best Bishoujos we’ve ever seen, which I never would have expected at that initial reveal. And let’s all take a moment to appreciate that her name was not gender-swapped, so there’s no “Edwina Scissorhands.” I would like a few more scars, though. [via Kotobukiya’s Facebook]

  • Mito Ikumi from Food Wars has definitely been gaining in popularity! At first it was just Erina getting figures, but so far we’ve had Kotobukiya’s Mito, an announcement from Max Factory, and now one from Alter! Some of my absolute favorite companies, so it’s a good day for me. Of course, as exciting as this is I’m really hoping they aren’t all in the bikini & shorts outfit. Of course it’s not like she really wears much more than that but still, a girl can dream. This version will be 1/7 scale and I assume we’ll see the sculpt at MegaHobby or Summer Wonder Festival. • Amakuni is a strange company. Some of their sculpts, like the recent 7 Sins figures, are totally amazing. And then they really drop the ball in terms of quality, like with their hot springs Momohime who was a bit of a hot mess. And sadly, the trend will continue with their matching Kongiku. In theory this is a figure I should really love. Voluptuous fox lady in a towel? But aside from her face, nothing is doing it for me. Her breast sculpt is just weird (one so squished and floating, the other normal?), and the seams on her tail are SO bad. Like, “looks like a figure from 2008” bad. I thought we were past such things! Her retail of ¥10000 seems almost reasonable, but this is Amakuni so you know she’s an exclusive. Pre-order At: Big In Japan | Nippon Yasan
