Thank you, based Alter gods, for making a figure of Labrys–because we all know I ain’t buying MegaHouse’s ridiculously overpriced version, as nice as she may be. I was so happy when they announced her at WonFest, and though I was a bit disappointed there was no real progress when they brought her to MegaHobby it does mean a fresh new gallery! Including a peek at her masked face, which I like a lot more than the one on display.
Funnily enough, I’ve had Persona 4 Arena sitting in its box for over a year now and have yet to play it. Does this make me a bad Persona fan? …yeah, probably, but I’m kind of Persona 4′d out, at least when it comes to games. But hey, 5 looks dark and promising, and I’m totally buying the 4 dancing game. But when it comes to figures, there are never enough! Except for Aegis. Stop making Aegis. Please.

As much as I loathed Good Smile Company’s Maiko Madoka (for a variety of reasons: mainly the terrifying face, but also stupid exclusive for no reason), I was kind of hoping they’d continue the line. Mostly because I am not as worn out of the Madoka girls as I am of, say, Saber or Miku. Bring on a little more Puella Magi, GSC, we can take it! Also I wanted Homura in cute clothing, okay?! So sue me.
Well, no surprise here–in fact, I’m just amazed it took them this long. That’s right, Maiko HomuHomu is happening! I adore the art, and I really don’t think they can screw up her face like they did on Madoka. And yes, I am hoping for Mami too. And a Maiko Nendoroid to go with Madoka’s. Ugh, I just can’t get enough–and with Rebellion in theaters, I’d put on my Madoka raincoat if I were you.

When Kotobukiya started up their ArtFX J Yu Yu Hakusho line, I thought for sure we’d only be getting the three original releases: Hiei (review), Yusuke (review), and Kurama (review). After all, older anime usually doesn’t get a ton of love, let alone a full-fledged figure line! A set of 3, sure… but a ton of figures? However, two more have been announced so far: Kuwabara, who we will be looking at today, and Yoko Kurama, who is hitting shelves in the US very soon!
Kuwabara is definitely different from your usual PVC figure. Even among the rare male crop, he stands out… mainly because he looks like a street thug, which is kind of cool. I mean, we usually only get pretty guys who could be mistaken for girls in a ton of situations. It’s time for some manly man love, so hit the jump and let’s get started!

Ugh. Racing Miku. Unlike Snow Miku, the designs over the years for Racing Miku have stayed pretty much the same. While we got some nice variety from 2010 Miku (review), 2011 and 2012 were pretty damn similar. Sure, one had a crown and one looked more grown up, which was enough for me to order both. And then… Good Smile decided to make a grown up looking Racing Miku with a crown. Because that’s totally new and different, right!?
This version popped up painted a short while ago, so I was expecting a preview and here it is. Sadly, she looks even less appetizing than I originally thought she would. Maybe because of how damn creepy her face is? I don’t know why, but it does NOT look like a figure face at all. More like some weird projection of a Project Diva expression onto plastic. Uncanny Valley like woah. Plus we get Kahotan straying into Mikatan levels of creep, with wonderful lines like “Those smooth armpits and her belly button… Why is it that we get so exited seeing these areas we don’t normally get to see?!” Ugh please stop forever.
Racing Miku 2013 is going up for order tonight, and since Stephen is a Miku addict she’ll probably end up in our collection even though right now I want to shove this figure out the window. Seriously, the face. It’s freaking me out. Also, GSC, can you please make a figure of this amazing Racing Miku design? You need to spice things up a little.

While I’ve been a less-than-enthusiastic supporter of Dragon’s Crown in the figure world, two have won me over so far. First Vertex’s Tiki, and then MegaHouse when they showed off their painted version of Elf. I really thought my issues with the anatomy would prevent me from even thinking about buying her, but she is SO gorgeous! The hair shading is unreal. She popped up with Amazon at MegaHobby, and now we get to take a closer look at both of them!
The more I look at Elf, the more I love her. I mean there’s a chipmunk IN HER HOOD. I didn’t even notice that before! We also get to take a, ahem, perhaps too close look at Amazon, who is still a lumpy monstrosity in my eyes. I’m just… scared. What is happening. It’s like She-Hulk ON STEROIDS. Last but not least there’s the full art for Sorceress, who is carrying a frog, so I do have some hope left.

If you read Plastikitty even moderately regularly, you probably know that I have a serious Tony Taka addiction. I’ll buy pretty much any figure that he’s done the art for (with the notable exception of Griffon’s recent figures, shudder). My very first Tony Taka figure was Kotobukiya’s Elwing, who was one of the first PVC figures I ever bought. This was quickly followed up by their Kureha, and then… Celestia! I think she’s what really got the addiction going, probably because of dat hair sculpt. She also has the honor of being the figure that got my mom into collecting: she loved Celestia so much, she bought her own! And it’s actually the one I used for this shoot, since mine is still in a box… somewhere.
Celestia still has a special place in my heart, even if Max Factory, Alter, and Kotobukiya’s new takes on TT art greatly surpass her in quality. Looking at her critically (which is hard, due to my nostalgic fondness) I can see some issues: the stiffness of her hair around the ears, the perfect and unrealistic circle created by her skirt. But she still has some beautiful aspects that override everything else, and taking her out for a shoot rekindled my love affair with Celestia. You’ll always be one of my favorite elves!

I really, really want to like this figure. Embrace Japan is often an overlooked company but they’re one of my favorites because they take risks and produce figures no one else would take on, like Sigrid of the Thorn. I also love the character designs of Eiyuu*Senki, done by none other than Oyari Ashito who does really beautiful work. I mean, Gift’s King Arthur was gorgeous, and the sculpt for this one looked pretty good… right?
Well… I actually don’t really like it now that she’s painted. At all. Her pose is just so awkward, and I feel like the face doesn’t do justice to Ashito’s art. The hat is also super weird, makes her look like a Hitler youth who joined the Navy. I mean, the base is pretty cool and she does come with the crown! But no note if it actually goes on her head. However, she does have one redeeming feature: the hilarious censoring once she’s cast-off. I mean, the plush bear… it’s too funny.

Ah, One Piece. MegaHobby Expo is practically centered around this anime/manga megalith, since a third of MegaHouse’s figures seem to come from it. But I always save it for last because, well… I don’t really know a whole lot about One Piece. So we’re just gonna get right into the news.
We’ve got a lot of new figures here! Bellamy the Hyena, Cavendish (who I thought was Robin at first because of the hair, this is how much I know about One Piece), Bartolomeo, Momonosuke (SO CUTE), Marco with chicken legs, and Kaku will all be joining the P.O.P lineup! Only the last two are painted so it will probably be a bit before we see any releases… but so far, none of them are calling my name. Big surprise, right?

Naruto is, without a doubt, one of the most popular anime & manga series. It spans continents and age groups, and has a staggering amount of merchandise… except for figures. I really have no idea why, but there are almost no scaled figures of the cast. Recently Plex has been doing some work on that front, but they are far from the most reliable of companies, so we really only have MegaHouse to rely on: thankfully, they’re finally moving onto Shippuden outfits!
We saw this version of Sasuke for the first time at Spring MegaHobby, and now he’s painted! In case you couldn’t guess from the header. I’m not much of a Sasuke fan (because oh my god the whole friggin show is about getting Sasuke back, it’s like “let’s save Rukia!” almost longer these shows kill me), but my brother is the world’s most rabid Sasuke fanboy so this figure warms my cold, dead heart more than a little.

Ah, the Seven Deadly Sins line: a massive collaboration between Nitro+, Amakuni and Orchid Seed that has proven to be my downfall… at least when it comes to money. I mean, most of these are exclusives and they suck your money out like little vampires. We’ve got quite a few updates from today’s events, the most important of which are TWO new paintjobs: Amakuni’s Belphegor and Beelzebub are both complete!
I am IN LOVE with Beelzebub. The wings, the pink twintails, she’s amazing. Belphegor is cute too but Bub over here is kind of stealing the show. We’ve got the alternate “sexy” version of Asmodeus here too in her bunny outfit, which I am… not digging (I wonder if the other girls will get less clothed versions too like her and Lucifer?), and also a second look at the Satan sculpt (which can you please release as a regular figure Orchid Seed thanks).
