Asuna Archive

  • Asuna had a shining moment a few years ago as a figure It Girl. Everyone had figures of her, and while her popularity has definitely fallen off, we still get the occasional take on Asuna. This time around it’s Alter, who showed off their sculpt of her at Wonder Festival. As you’d expect from Alter, she looks lovely. But perhaps not as detailed as some of their newer offerings? Maybe she just needs a paint of coat, but right now I feel like something is lacking. The pose is nice, I love her hair sculpt, and the face is really on-model, but nothing about this really wows me. Kotobukiya’s version is still my favorite of her. [via Dengeki]

  • I don’t know about you guys, but I just love when existing companies suddenly change their name/merge into another company. It’s not at all confusing and annoying. Like you may peruse this gallery and think “wait, that Kamina is Myethos! Celestia Ludenberck from Danganronpa is Myethos!” Well not anymore! Emontoys is “distributing” for them, but they also seem to be making quite a few figures of their own. Life is a mystery. They had a ton of announcements out, like a super cute China Dress Sonico, Undine ver Asuna, basically the whole cast of Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?? in various outfits, Aoba Suzukaze & Hifumi Takimoto from New Game!!, and so much more. But the most important thing? Definitely… SHIBA DRILL. These amazing and perfect gift-from-the-gods figures are literally just shibes with a variety of cones (traffic cones, ice cream cones, ect) on their heads. I’m in love, this is my new favorite thing. [via Dengeki]

  • Male anime-style dolls used to be a thing of dreams and only dreams, but recently they’ve become a very firm reality. First we got Len from Volks, and now it’s time for Kirito from Sword Art Online! I mean, he looks pretty damn feminine here, but that’s to be expected with dolls right? In any case, you now have multiple choices for some DD boyfriends for your ladies. Many years ago we got an Asuna Dollfie, and of course she’ll be getting a re-release… of sorts. This new ‘Titania’ version will be on sale with Kirito, and while I adore her outfit & ears the face has still not won me over. There’s no concrete info on when these will go for sale, as the blog just says early summer, but I have a strong suspicion these will be lottery and not pre-order. [via the DD Blog]

  • Aniplex had some truly epic figures on display this year. All of their teaser girls were on display, and they totally stole the show! The detail of Devil Homura, Asuna, and Jeanne d’Arc is truly astounding. But even their simpler girls, like the Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata maiko line, was pretty stunning. Saenai seems so popular, because they also had a casual Megumi. They have a second figure of Kaori Miyazono from Your Lie In April, and an announcement for the beautiful Ishtar from Fate/Grand Order. Who appears to be Rin. Seriously, what is up with F/GO!? [via Aniplex’s Twitter]

  • Orca Toys, aka company of my heart because of all their Tama-nee figures, brought the heat to Wonder Festival. And by “heat” I mean “mildly terrifying cat girls with some very strange bodies. And no Tamakis. Their booth was a strange mix of sexy and nightmare fuel this year, like they want to really confuse us. “Ooh, nice.” “Oooh, terrifying!” But the gorgeous Asuna was on display and he has still stolen my heart, so I’ll give them a pass this one time. But there better be more Tamakis this summer, Orca! I’m watching you! [via figsoku & moeyo]

  • While Asuna had a moment where she was basically queen of the figure world, I don’t own any scaled versions of her aside from the Kotobukiya one. In part this is because most of them didn’t appeal to me, but the few I did like were all exclusive. Her time has come and gone, so I wasn’t expecting to ever shell out for another version of her… but that might be changing. Out of nowhere Orca Toys is showing off a finished & painted sculpt of her, and oh man… it’s beautiful! I love the soft colors, the detailed body & hair sculpt, her sweet pose and face. This is totally my kind of swimsuit figure. Let’s just hope she is not 1/4 scale and crazy expensive! [via Orca’s Twitter]

  • So up until now, I knew Broccoli as that company that made the nightmare-inducing Sonico. I mean, guys, it was BAD. They were a company that made bad figures. But suddenly all their sculpts are detailed and the paintwork is great? I’m so confused. What happened. Because, really, these new figures look hella nice. We have Asuna and Silica from Sword Art Online, a drop dead gorgeous rendition of Tenshi, Nene Ayachi, Miyuki Shiba from Boring Magic School, and more! They also showed off a Caster from Fate/Extra, but since she was marked do not photograph we sadly cannot show her to you. But check out everything else in the gallery! [via Akibahobby]

  • I’ve never been really big on figmas. True, I used to order a lot more, but I was never really a collector of them. Probably because they’re so damn tiny and easy to break! But still, every once in a while one comes along that makes me think “man, I really want that!” And while I managed to resist the allure of all the previous Sword Art Online figmas, I’m not sure if my willpower will be strong enough for the new Undine version of Asuna. I mean, we have blue hair and wings, what more can a girl ask for? Cool action poses? Weaponry? Elf ears? Well, Undine Asuna has it all! Sadly her best face, the smiling one, is a GSC shop exclusive. To be honest, these exclusive elements are kind of putting me off buying these figures all together. It’s like game DLC that’s actually a key friggin part of the game: don’t make me pay extra for it! If you make a smiling face, put it in the box!!! Argh. Anyway, orders open tonight and she’s set for a December release. [via the figma blog]

  • Remember Genco? Probably not, because they’re literally a brand-new company. With one figure announcement. But apparently they’re out for our money, because they suddenly have 4 figures out on display at Anime Japan! To no one’s surprise Sword Art Online features heavily: they’ll be doing swimsuit figures of Asuna and Leafa to go with the announced Yuuki. And then there’s a totally random Alleyne from Queen’s Blade. Haha, that came out of nowhere! And it seems like at the moment, Genco’s sculpting theme is “pole dancing” and I’m not too sure how I feel about that. [via Dengeki]

  • We’ve already showed off two figma announcements thus far, Yami Yugi from Yu-Gi-Oh! (which WILL also get a Dark Magician Girl figma, thanks for the heads up Germaniac!) and the Magic Knight Rayearth announcement. Just like Nendoroids, most of what the Good Smile Company umbrella seems to bring anymore are smaller cheaper figures they can sell a veritable buttload of, so while Good Smile Company has a handle on all things chibi with Nendoroids, Max Factory is taking care of all of our poseable needs with over 30 new figmas. Up in the header we’ve got the newest Racing Miku design for 2015 that looks like all of the other ones, but with some new gradients and more clear plastic on her, the protagonist from Persona 4, who looks badass as all hell, and Rin Tohsaka from Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works. We’ve also got an announcement of Emiya Shirou, also from Unlimited Blade Works (who in the world actually WANTS this?), Angela Balzac from Expelled From Paradise, new versions of Asuna, Kirito, and Leafa from Sword Art Online II, Haruna and Takao from Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova, Conan from Mirai Shounen Conan, Holmes from Meitantei Holmes (who is awesome), an Iron Man mark XXI (because people totally asked for this…), Kiryuu Kazama from Ryuu ga Gotoku, R. Tanaka Ichirou from Kyuukyoku Choujin R, and Iona from Gekijouban Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova DC. Yeah, lots of characters from things people don’t really know yet again. Then in generic moe girl land, I mean, iDOLM@STER and Love Live land, we’ve got enough tiny girls to keep you happy forever. On the iDOLM@STER side of things we’ve got Rin Shibuya, Uzuki Shimamura, and Mio Honda. Then for Love Live we’ve got nine new figmas: Ayase Eri, Hoshizora Rin, Koizumi Hanayo, Kousaka Honoka, Minami Kotori, Nishikino Maki, Sonada Umi, Toujou Nozomi, and Yazawa Niko. Anyone else think their names sound like sushi rolls? Because I sure do between Umi, Maki, and Nozomi. Like your moe girls with a bit of mechanical doohickeys attached to them? No problem! You’re still covered! Anthropomorphic Ship Girls –I mean– Kantai Collection has some new additions with Kitakami and Yukikaze. More a fan of Anthropomorphic Plane Girls? We’ve got Yoshika and Mio Sakamoto from Strike Witches. Just a fan of robots in general? Tsugumori and the Type 18 Guardian from Knights of Sidonia have you covered. Last, but not least, we’ve got more goofiness as The Thinker and Venus de Milo have popped up again in figma form. Will these ever see the light of day? Who knows! But we’ve got enough to tide us over until their eventual release with a little bit of everything. [via Wonderful Hobby Life For You and Dengeki Hobby]
