Black Canary Archive

  • Given the huge number of DC movies on the horizon, I’m sure by next NYCC Kotobukiya’s booth will be flooded with them (though let’s be honest, I’m only hoping for Aquaman & Mera). But this year there was only one: the hugely impressive Batman vs Superman duo. I sure do hate that stumpy batsuit but it looks great on this scale! We also had Bishoujos. Lots of Bishoujos. Both Harleys, Black Canary, Wonder Girl. We had the villains ArtFX+ (including their new star Harley Quinn), the Super Powers line, and their larger scale ArtFX statues. Check them all out below!

  • Black Canary is probably the Bishoujo that fans had to wait the longest for (discounting Lady Deadpool of course, who was in “is it going to be made?” limbo for years). We first saw her art in May of 2013, over 2 1/2 years ago. Then, a few months later, the sculpt. Right on track, except she vanished shortly after! They ended up redoing the sculpt in April of this year, with the painted version right behind. Dinah is one of my absolute favorite DC girls, solely because of Gail Simone’s run of Birds of Prey, so I’ve been anticipating her with bated breath for a long, long time now. But after such a long wait, can the final product ever live up to expectations? Hit the jump to find out!

  • Kotobukiya’s DC Bishoujo Black Canary is definitely one of my all-time favorite Bishes. Not just because I love the character, but because she’s just perfect. Basically everything I want in a Bishoujo: cute, playful, doesn’t cross sexy into tacky, and true to the character. So you’d think I would be really excited about the recolor that was announced at NYCC, especially because it’s blue: my favorite color! But somehow this alternate Canary just does not do it for me. Maybe it’s too much blue? I’d much prefer an alternate outfit version of her. But even if you do like her, she’s not the easiest to get! This colorway is limited to 1,300 pieces and you can snag it only at AFX. She’s $69.99, the same price as the regular, so there’s no worry about added fees. I still kind of want her because of that LE siren call, but do I need a Blue Canary? Probably not. [via Kotobukiya]

  • Since we are, after all, at a comic convention, Kotobukiya brought the comic figures out in force. There was only one announcement, the art for the Harley Quinn Bishoujo, but a lot more was going on! Many of the past Bishoujos were on display (like my boo Starfire), along with the retro Super Powers line and some of the DC ArtFX statues. And some of the newer figures were on display too, like the ArtFX+ Arkham Knight line of, duh, the Arkham Knight and Batman himself! Because it’s just not a DC display without at least 2 figures of Bats.

  • Sadly, Plastikitty was not able to get to San Diego Comic Con this year. Well, not sadly for our wallets. Very happily for our wallets. But for our event coverage? Pretty sad. Thankfully, we had some awesome help so we could still bring all our lovely readers shots of the figures at SDCC! Because as we know, Kotobukiya brought basically every Bishoujou they’d had up their sleeve for the past six months. Tali, Spider Gwen, Lady Deadpool, Poison, Harley Quinn v 2, Raven, Zatanna? All here! And, of course, you can check them out in the gallery. We got an especially close look at Poison, who I think there was the most hype about. I mean, given the long wait, that’s to be expected! And (of course) reviews are mixed. Is she too sexy? Is she not sexy enough? Depends on who you ask. Personally, I’m… not sure. I love her face, hair & pose, but I’m not sold on the hips. As for the rest of the Bishoujos? I’m particularly enamored with Lady Deadpool! [Thanks to the amazing Anne Mortensen-Agnew for providing us with these images! <3]

  • It’s been years in the making, but finally, today, we have the full reveal of Kotobukiya’s Black Canary Bishoujo figure! We got a quick teaser the other day, but now, we finally have full pictures, and man, she’s everything I hoped and dreamed for. The execution on her leg sculpt with the actual fishnets finally in place just looks so perfect and her facial expression is definitely fitting for the character. I also really like how her hair sculpt came out as it adds a ton to the motion of this figure. Black Canary will be 1/7th scale and come out in November and I for one cannot wait; it’s been a long time coming and the wait has surely been worth it. [via Kotobukiya’s Facebook]

  • Black Canary was announced almost two years ago, making her one of the longest in-proccess Bishoujo figures. Lady Deadpool comes close, but she was kind of in limbo for a while whereas we got a sculpt for Canary that was totally scrapped. The new one was revealed a short while back and I was really hoping we would see faster progress after that and indeed–here we are, with a painted sculpt! Or, you know, part of a painted sculpt. It’s…. a bit of her hair and torso. Um, the colors are right? Kind of hard to make any judgments without seeing the whole thing! [via Koto’s Facebook]

  • It’s been a long, long road for Kotobukiya’s DC Bishoujo Black Canary. While the DC line usually moves a bit slower than the Marvel one, Black Canary hit a few roadblocks along the way. She was first shown off in art form almost two years ago, and barely 6 months later we got a peek at the sculpt. Well, the first sculpt–because that version ended up being totally scrapped and she was started again from scratch! Only a few months ago at Wonder Festival we got a look at a very rough version of the new sculpt, and I was prepared to wait another half-year for any more news. But nope, it’s happening right now! That’s right, finally the full sculpt reveal for Black Canary. No fishnets yet because those will be made of real fabric! I’m totally loving the pose and body sculpt, but I’m not so sure about the face–maybe it’s the nose? [via Kotobukiya’s Facebook]

  • We’ve already seen a lot of what DC had on offer at Toyfair: Bombshells and Covergirls, TV and cartoon toys, and of course some new action figures. But there was more! Because their booth was a labyrinth of figures that you could never escape from. Just kidding, there were lots of exists, but it sure took a hell of a long time to finish shooting everything in it. There was really a little bit of everything here. Want a Deadman action figure? A super adorable black & white Batgirl statue? A badass motorcyle-riding Harley? The world’s weirdest Wonder Woman? A Green Arrow & Black Canary figure so sickly-sweet it makes me want to vomit? It’s all there, so check it out (and more!) in the gallery!

  • We’ve already taken a peek at the two new Bishoujos at Toy Fair: Sakura and Sniper Wolf. But of course they had a whole lot more at the event! I mean, it’s kind of their signature line, at least in the US market. There were plenty of the older and soon-to-be released girls like Freddy & Jason and Batwoman, along with all those new announcements from the past few weeks: Raven, Lady Deadpool, Tali, and Wasp. There’s also a look at Black Canary’s long-awaited new sculpt! We’ll be bringing you full galleries of all the new girls later this week (including She-Hulk with the new face), so what Bishoujos are you currently looking forward to?
