  • So far, Kotobukiya’s Yu-Gi-Oh line has been pretty much a smash hit with fans, with Yugi (review), Kaiba (review), and Joey (review) getting rave reviews. The only “controversial” figure was Dark Magician (review), who was given his original card colorway–much to the dismay of the fans of his anime colors. But Kotobukiya listens to their customers far more than most companies, so it was hardly a surprise when they revealed an alternate colorway of Dark Magician. And even though he was an exclusive, their US store made him surprisingly easy to get (and affordable!). I was one of the few people who really loved the crazy card colors, but even I can’t deny the appeal of his classic appearance: so hit the jump, and let’s get this duel started!

  • I’m sure by now you all know now much I love Yu-Gi-Oh. For a long time it had no figures to speak of, until Kotobukiya announced that they were taking on the series! It’s part of ArtFX J, a line dedicated to mostly male figures from older series. So far from Yu-Gi-Oh we have seen Dark Magician Girl, Yugi Moto (review) and Seto Kaiba (review)–of course since DMG was first, I was expecting a Dark Magician next! Some people were less than pleased with the choice to go with his card colors for this figure. If you are one of those people, don’t worry, because he is getting a second colorway! But personally, I like the stark contrast between the green skin and pink & blue armor, so of course I was looking forward to this version! Hit the jump to see how he came out.

  • We literally just found out that Kotobukiya’s Dark Magician is getting a new colorway, and already we have release info! There’s good news and bad: the bad is that he’s an exclusive. The good is that if he’s anything like Duel of Fates Yugi he WILL get a US release for a pretty great price! The retail price is ¥7800 and he’ll be coming out way off in July. He’ll be exclusive to Kotobukiya’s webstore, so you can contact a proxy if you’re totally desperate for him and have cash to spare, but personally I’d hold off for a few weeks on a US announcement. • When Kotobukiya first unveiled their Dark Magician, it was met with mixed reactions: on one hand, it was cool they used the original colors, but many people understandably wanted the anime colors. Well… here it is! Dark Magician (or Black Magician, if you prefer), in his anime colored glory. I’m sure this will make some fans very happy! And keep an eye on Plastikitty this week for a review of the snazzy original. [via Akibahobby]

  • As you may know, we here at Plastikitty don’t usually do individual pre-order posts unless it’s for an exclusive. However, we occasionally must make an exception, and any figure that gets fans THIS riled up is deserving of its own discussion! Kotobukiya has been working on their Yu-Gi-Oh line for a while now, first with Dark Magician Girl, then Yugi, followed by Kaiba and Dark Magician. Joey, Bakura and Marik have been announced as well. Dark Magician showed up sculpted at WonFest, and of course everyone assumed he’d get his anime colorway–however, they decided to go with a slightly refined version of his card design (that was also used in the original Toei animation). I like this color scheme: if you look at the shot of DMG, Yugi and DM in the gallery, I think the blue makes him “fit in” more. Given his big pose, the purple might make him pop a little too much. However, many people are not pleased with this decision. It seems to be quite polarizing: some people love it (myself included), other are… well, furious. If you check their Facebook page it’s swarmed with comments hoping for a recolor, Personally, I think it’s rather interesting that figure collecting can get people SO upset, but on the other hand it’s a lot of money (though his retail is only ¥7,800 for a 12″ tall figure) and collectors deserve the best for what they pay. Well, I don’t think they will be doing a repaint, but a recolor is always possible and honestly I think might have been planned from the get-go since Yugi got one. For those of you that like this creepy magician he’ll be released in January–for the rest, well, let’s hope you get your recolor! I wouldn’t mind having two Dark Magicians… Pre-order At: AmiAmi | Hobby Search

  • Last fall, Kotobukiya announced a whole slew of Yu-Gi-Oh figures. They’ve been coming out slowly but surely (keep an eye out for a review of Yugi on Plastikitty!), with Kaiba being the most recent release. Now they’re getting around to the last announcement, Dark Magician! Fitting, since Dark Magician Girl was the first in the line. I think these two will look really badass together, especially if displayed with Kaiba and Yugi! [via Figure/GK]
