  • Vertex is one of those companies I can’t really pin down. They alternate between niche, unique video game toys-like their new Selvaria or the Noel recolor-and figures that seem focused purely on fanservice. It’s like the company has two heads of operations who never talk. This year we got an announcement for Next Black from the Neptunia franchise, along with the sculpts for Rosa from BraveGirls Raven and Tsurusaki Takahiro’s original character. [via moeyo]

  • Broccoli is really one of those “almost” companies. So many of the things they do are… almost great. They’ll have a really cool sculpt with sub-par paint, or a sculpt that’s awesome except for one specific flaw. Like Narmaya in the header: that base/diorama is FANTASTIC, but 1) her boobs are stupid and 2) the hair and face seem a little more simplistic than the rest. However, I think their Kurumi Tokisaki is really cool! They had some neat franchises on display, like God Eater, Hetalia, and BlazBlue, are really cool. But none of them ever really click with me, you know? [via figsoku]

  • So MegaHobby was, like, 3 days ago but apparently it’s totally time for another event to happen! Because all the companies not at MH had to do something with their time. First up is Vertex, aka “how do boobs work because I’ve never seen a human female.” There are so many hilarious boobs on display! From seasonally appropriate boobage (the Valkyrie Chronicles girls, and Santa Sonico–remember when she had a realistic bust?), to cyber boobage (Purple Heart, whose boobs are trying to escape her body), to the traditional gravity-deftying boobage (Fiona from Border Break!). But there were almost-realistic girls on display too, like Sakuya from Shining Blade. And their announcements, like Noel from Blazblue, are pretty surprising given their usual demographic. Brunhilde from Aoki Kakumei no Valkyria is, however, exactly what I’d expect from them. [via Vertex’s Twitter]

  • I feel like recently Alter has been getting away from what they used to be so good at: intricate, badass girls with crazy weaponry. I mean, their Nanoha line kind of defined the company, but recently they’ve been more “girls standing around in boring outfits” than, well, anything else. So of course I was thrilled at the announcement of a Mu-12: kind of hard to make her boring, right? Well, the pose isn’t much to write home about (aside, of course, from the obvious butt focus), but the paint looks amazing. And her base, spectacular! It lights up too. [via dengeki & moeyo]

  • Remember that one time I couldn’t keep straight the characters in BlazBlue? Haha, what fun times we all had. Well, we knew a figure of Kokonoe from FREEing was coming, and now we have this super detailed super high quality photo. Sure can tell what she looks like, right? Pink hair. Blobby outline. Sleeves. Someone get in there with a better camera, stat! [UPDATE] A much crisper picture in the gallery from Akibahobby [via Twitter]

  • [EDIT] Dear everyone, I am an idiot. This is not Taokaka, as you probably knew. It’s Professor Kokone! Good job me. Way to do the research. Soooo we’re not getting a Taokaka. Just ignore the post behind the curtain. From the very beginning of FREEing’s (admittedly mediocre) Blazblue line, if you polled a bunch of fans on the female character they wanted to see in it the answer was a resounding “Taokaka please!” But, you know, she’s not as loli-licious as Rachel or booby-licious as Mu-12 or Makoto. So, alas, we went without her. Well, that might be changing! We have a sculpt for what pretty clearly seems like a PVC figure of Taokaka… though sadly she’s sans hood. Guys. What are you doing. I don’t want to see her face, thank you very much. But I guess beggars can’t be choosers. Given that FREEing is really the only company working on an “expansive” BlazBlue line that would be my guess as to who is producing her–the sculpt is a bit choppy for Amakuni and nowhere near Alter levels. • We have already seen a lot from Good Smile Company this Toy Fair: Kill la Kill figures, Nintendo, Berserk, and Attack on Titan, along with in-depth galleries of the Titan statue, Tiki, the Motoko & Zombie figmas, Ryuuko, and… a car? But they had a huge booth this year jam-packed with goodies, so we have a lot more to show you! Many of their Sword Art Online figures were on display, including the new GSC Asuna, who is totally gorgeous! I passed on her pre-orders but seeing the figure in person has me re-considering this. Some Wonder Festival announcements were there, like the Pyramid Head and Bubble Head Nurse figmas, Lucy & Natsu from the Fairy Tail line, and Ninja Storm figmas. Then there was a lovely display of some of their older figures, like the Black Rock Shooter animation line and the amazing Love Is War Miku Hatsune. Check them all out in the gallery!

  • I have faith that one day, a company will produce a Noel Vermillion figure I actually like. Amakuni’s first Noel certainly didn’t do it for me, and I liked the recolor even less. Vertex’s sculpt had too many problems anatomically, and while I do like the (very) recent recolor, I can’t get behind the fact that she is an event exclusive. So is this the one? ….Almost. I’m a sucker for long hair made out of clear PVC and overly gigantic weapons, so this Noel certainly has that going for her. Sadly, it uses the same base body as Amakuni’s first 2 Noels which I loathe. Escher Girl all over the place. But… she’s so shiny! I’m torn. The fact that she is an exclusive with a base price of ¥9,800 does help sway me, though her October release is so very far away. Surely I could save up by then! But will I ever get over her broken spine? [via Amakuni]

  • Vertex’s figure of Noel from BlazBlue went over quite well with fans, so it’s really no surprise that they are cashing on on the sculpt with another colorway. I mean, you can pretty much expect more than one version of any character from a fighting game: 2P versions just scream “more merchandise!” It will also, then, come as no surprise that she is a Winter Wonder Festival exclusive, but she won’t be any more than her original retail of ¥8800. Personally, I like this more than the first version. The golden tones make her sculpt pop more than the primary colors of the original, and I adore her golden eyes. However, these shots look almost unfinished, like they’re the pictures someone took in their bathroom after getting the figure instead of promotional images from the company. And her left leg is still a killer for me: I just can’t get over the funky bend. [via Vertex]

  • Merry Christmas Eve, Plastikitties! Of course magazine scans decided to drop on one of the busiest days of the year–usually we get them on the 21st or 22nd, but this year Japan decided “hey, let’s wait until those crazy Americans are actually doing something!” So this month we are keeping it short and sweet. This is an action packed bunch of scans: MegaHouse has their Dragon’s Crown Sorceress sculpted, release info for their Amazon, and more IDOLM@STER goodies (of course). AlphaMax has a surprise sculpt of Saber Bride that looks amazing! Hyakka Ryouran has a ton of figures in these scans: Inshun Houzouin from Alter, Mataemon Araki from Kaitendoh, and a painted Naoe from New Line. Clayz is bringing a Takeshi Miyagawi Ymir sculpt to PVC (FINALLY!), and MegaHouse’s new Liliana is painted. Amakuni is redoing their Noel (again), this time with a tweaked sculpt, and their Shimakaze is done too. The Seven Sins Satan is… still just a sculpt, and the second Asmodeus is here in more detail. We’ve also got a repaint of Koto’s Kobato, which I am honestly not feeling at all. On the Tony Taka front, swimsuit Nellis is sculpted and looking amazing, and the AlphaMax Viola is painted (and I’m in love!). We’ve got lots of Nendos and the Snow Miku figma, Fairy Tail’s Erza Scarlet, and FREEing has their yukata Tamaki and Inori painted. And last but not least, Alter’s Hayate and Max Factory’s Cerberus make appearances. Phew, that’s a lot of stuff! Check them all out in the gallery. [via Figure/GK]
