  • Sometimes you think you’ve seen all there is to offer in the world of vinyl. I mean, how many plastic cats and Dunnys does one girl need? I mean, kidding obviously, there’s no limit to the amount of toy cats I will own. Or real cats. Anyway, sometimes something fresh pops into the market that takes even me by surprise. And I was definitely shocked to see a chess set at Kidrobot this year, with gorgeous art by Otto Bjornik. A cool idea in concept, but sadly it’s a little too rich for my blood. You can buy the set two ways: the first is in a double blind boxed set where you will get one pawn and one mystery royal figure + four board pieces (with the pawn in a window box so you can see the color). These retail for $19.99 each. There will also be super-limited full sets of 33: the entire white & black sets, plus the uber-rare gold chase that you can check out in the gallery. Price on this is TBA, but I can’t imagine actually being able to afford it. However, imagine how nice this would look on a coffee table…

  • It’s been a good time to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan! Before we had the regular, pretty basic toys but recently we’ve had all kinds of good stuff like the Good Smile TMNT statues and Kidrobot’s figures. This year at Toy Fair they unveiled a whole new line, which will include a new line of minifigures: the Shell Shock series, which is full of both good guys and villains from the ’80’s cartoon. We also have two medium-size figures of Shredder and Triceraton. Did you ever stop and think about how weird the TMNT world is? I mean, we have mutant turtles fighting ninjas and humanoid dinosaurs?? How high were the creators.

  • Umaru-chan definitely seems to be the “it” show of this season. Pretty much everyone I know who watches anime is raving about it, including Stephen, who was wildly excited for the announced trading figures set. Given that it was only half-painted at Wonder Festival I expected a bit of a wait, but I guess GSC really wants to hop right on that hype train! Not that they haven’t already with the full-sized Nendoroid, which is too amazing for words. This set includes, of course, a ton of Umarus–4, to be specific. Well, 4 that we are seeing here, and then a super secret 5th one. There’s also the other 3 girls (Nana Ebina, Kirie Motoba, and Sylphynford Tachibana). Orders open tomorrow! I’m surprised there haven’t been any scales yet from the show–maybe it’s because of the chibi dimensions Umaru is usually in, but I’d really love a little 1/6th version of her hamster self! • After Kidrobot’s buyout by Neca, I think we were all a little curious about the direction they’d be moving in. I mean, Kidrobot has always been a niche company and now they’re owned by a merchandising juggernaut. We’ve already seen one of their new lines at Toy Fair, and a licensed one at that: the Adventure Time series. And from what we’ve seen at the event, they’re trying to strike a balance between old and new, original and licensed merchandise. For example, we have a Megaman figure and a line of Cartman blind boxes, but they’ve also announced a line of 3″ Trickys! It’s nice to see them using some of the other Dunny-family sculpts in this size, especially because it might mean an artist series in the future. For their 10-year anniversary, they’re also re-releasing the original three soild colorway Dunnys–yes, the super-ultra-rare ones! While all 3 colors (black, red, silver) are getting redone, we got word that silver will be the rarest of the trio. It’ll be interesting to see what the new management brings out for SDCC!

  • Man, MegaHouse sure is going crazy with these Sailor Moon Petit Chara Land sets. First the regular ones, and then we got the girls in their upgraded outfits, and now… school uniforms! This is the “School Life” set and it includes Usagi Tsukino, Rei Hino, Makoto Kino, Minako Aino, Ami Mizuno, and Mamoru Chiba in school outfits. Well, Mamoru obviously isn’t in one. Oh, and also Luna! I wonder if we’ll also get a “casual” set? You know, Shrine Maiden Rei. Make it happen. But that’s not all the Chara Land news we have! They showed off 4 more: special shiny versions of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars, and…. Princess Serenity! The shiny ones will be WonFest Summer 2014 exclusives, but no word yet on how to obtain Serenity. [via Sailor Moon Official]

  • While my interest in vinyl is continually waning, there are a few things that will always pull me back in: creepy/cute, and anything by the amazing duo of Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas. Stephen and I have been collecting their figures for a long time now, and we were beyond excited at the release of their Wandering Misfits miniseries which features a whole lot of Skelves… and you know how we feel about those. Only these ones are small, made out of vinyl, and a whole lot more affordable! We snagged an entire case along with a few store exclusives and thought that there would be nowhere better to bring this devious group than to an old cemetery in my hometown. All shots are, of course, by Stephen Donaldson, though I helped out a bit with set direction (aka sticking toys on gravestones–cute, and morbid!). Check them all out in the gallery, and let us know if you snatched up any of these Misfits–they do seem to be wandering off shelves at a rather alarming rate.

  • Remember the kind of creepy chibi comic figures we saw from Square-Enix and Kidrobot this Toy Fair? Well, this is like… the anime version of that. Trexis are a vinyl platform that hasn’t seen a lot of use in the past few years, but apparently it is being revived… and not with the designer vinyl crew, but with popular anime characters. Now you can get Bleach, Tiger & Bunny, Naruto, and Death Note figures on a kind of weird platform! This seems like Barnes & Noble weeabo fodder unless you really like the weird Lego hands, but maybe I’m just in a particularly judgmental state of mind. What do you think of these oddities, Plastikitties?

  • Did you look at the header and think “hmm, is this supposed to be a post about Bluefin? Or maybe Kidrobot?” Nope, turns out just about every vinyl company has hopped on to the “picking up popular licenses” train! It’s a really interesting turn: when I started collecting it was all about local artists and not selling out. Now, it’s…. Power Rangers! And Mr. Potato Head, Transformers, and G.I Joe. Obviously, from a profit standpoint, this is a clear decision to make. And these little guys were pretty cute! They also had big Chaos Bunnies to compliment the amazing minis we already looked at.

  • I must have spent half my childhood begging my parents for a pet rabbit. But we had cats (who might eat a rabbit), and guinea pigs (who a rabbit would beat up), so though I tried valiantly for years I never did get a bunny. Thankfully the toy world has a wonderful solution for me: Joe Ledbetter’s Chaos Bunnies! We have seen these guys in larger formats for years, but they were both rare and expensive which left many of us in the dust. Now, thankfully, we’re getting a miniseries which really couldn’t be more cute. Hoola Bunny, Hummingbird Bunny, Faerie Bunny, they are SO CUTE! Check out the full lineup after the jump.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been kicking and slicing their way back onto the scene in recent years and the latest to hop aboard the hype train is Kidrobot. Kidrobot brought announcements of big versions of Rocksteady and Bebop, a blister packaged Ooze Action series with the main four turtles, Shredder, and Splinter and all six will glow in the dark, a different complete blind boxed mini series, a blind boxed keychain series, t-shirts, and hats. That’s a lot! Thankfully, Kidrobot’s license is with the Nickelodeon version of the show and not the new upcoming Michael Bay movie. As much as I despise the direction Kidrobot is moving in with less original figures and more licensed figures due to their new business first philosophy, these really are adorable and awesome. Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, and Donatello all look awesome and I may just need to add that pizza hat to my ever growing collection too…
