Dark Magician Girl Archive

  • It’s been a long time coming (or at least it seems like it). And it has been two years since the announcement, so actually it has been a long time! That’s like a decade in the figure world. I’m a huge Yu-Gi-Oh fan, as you all know by now, so of course I’ve been waiting (im)patiently for the whole time. Though, you know, we kind of have enough DMG. But hey, this one is poseable! And, unlike Yugi, she actually has quite a few accessories. The staff, of course, a cool magic attack effect, her magic book, and some really cute faces. The attention to detail looks great, and in some of the close-up shots she actually looks like a scaled figure! Orders open tonight. I wonder who we’re going to get after Kaiba? Maybe some Toon versions of monsters…that would be amazing. [via the figma blog]

  • Well we’ve already showed you the KanColle figmas, the new Link and Zelda, the Persona 5 figmas, the¬†Bloodborne figma, and Li, but that’s not all that was on hand at WonFest! In things we already knew about land there’s the Kaiba figma, Dark Magician Girl’s figma, Leafa, the new Samus from Metroid Prime 3, Gravity Crow and Gravity Kitten from Gravity Daze 2, the protagonist from Persona 3, Fuchiko (who now has five color variations), R. Tanaka Ichirou from Kyuukyoku Choujin R, Conan from Mirai Shounen Conan, Kogure Kenzou from Seibu Keisatsu, and Majima Goro from Ryuu ga Gotoku. So what was actually new to the show then? Well we’ve got two figures from My Hero Academia with both Midoriya and Bakugou, who both look awesome, female Corrin from Fire Emblem: Fates, Guyver III, Ulala from Space Channel 5, Klaus von Reinherz from Kekkai Sensen, Mumei from Kabaneri, and Ononoki Yotsugi from the Monogatari series. Then we’ve got a few oddities with Asato Miyo and Rikka Shiina from Little Armory and then Nipako that are being made by Tomytec, and three new art additions by FREEing: The Mona Lisa, Scream, and The Actor. Personally I’m most excited for the My Hero Academia figmas and the super odd art additions, but what are you looking forward to? Let us know in the comments! • I think we were all a little on the fence when Kotobukiya announced their next Yu-Gi-Oh figures. Mostly because there are lots of characters we’d like to see in figure form (Mai Valentine!), but instead we got more Dark Magician Girl. And not just regular DMG, but… Apple and Lemon Magician Girls, from the new movies. Which, let’s be honest, is kind of weird. So I didn’t have any high expectations for these girls, yet I find myself kind of smitten with them! Or at least with Lemon, whose bubbly personality really shines in the sculpt. Apple I am less over the moon about, although I am such a sucker for wings that they might just both steal my heart. [via Kotobukiya]

  • We saw a lot of individual galleries from Good Smile Company this Toy Fair: figma Samus, the scaled Link, Batman & Superman Nendoroids, figma Yugi, the Zelda Nendoroid, and the Genos Nendoroid. But of course they brought so much more to the event! Like the amazingly goofy art-based figmas, the just-arrived Nendoroid Kirby (who was popular enough to get a re-release literally the day he came out), many of their Nintendo-based Nendoroids, and beautiful scaled figures like Dark Magician Girl and some of their many Mikus. We even got to see Zwyer’s Legend Of Korra figures. Check them all out in the gallery!

  • After a very long wait, it’s finally time for Max Factory’s Yu-Gi-Oh figures to make their way onto your pre-order list! It really feels like ages, but it hasn’t been that long at all. I just want them so bad that it feels like ages! It seems like both the Dark Magician Girl statue and Yami Yugi figma will be going up at the same time, unsurprisingly–tomorrow, to be exact! I have to say, I’m kind of disappointed in both of them. Dark Magician Girl looks nowhere near as good here as when we saw her in person–in fact, if I hadn’t seen her at NYCC, I wouldn’t want to order this figure at all. And Yugi has, like, no accessories. What the hell! So much potential wasted! But we just get some cards, a duel deck, and 3 very similar faces. Boo. [via the figma blog]

  • Miyazawa Model Exhibition is one of those “in-between” events. Nestled right in the middle of Summer WonFest and Fall MegaHobby, it’s a chance for companies to… not really show off much new. Let’s be honest, they save the big stuff for the big event, so we don’t get a ton of news from Miyazawa. But Good Smile Company & co brought, like, literally everything they’re working on (that we know about). Just a TON of stuff. Most of it was things we knew about, but we do have some updates: their lovely Felia is finally painted (and, well, no as pretty as I expected), Nendoroid Sheeda from Fire Emblem is finished, figma Yugi showed up, and basically we got a ton of other paint updates. The star of the show was definitely Mebae Miku: hopefully her orders open soon! [via Akibahobby]

  • Need more Yu-Gi-Oh after our Yami Yugi figma gallery? Not to fear! As you may know, Good Smile Company brought Max Factory’s Dark Magician Girl to NYCC as well! So of course we had to take her out of the case and get a closer look. I was originally not on board with the color palette, but it’s definitely been growing on me. The pastels fit the original card art, and in person it’s not quite as washed out as those first pictures. And the base is so cute! Hopefully she’s not an exclusive.

  • It’s no secret that we here at Plastikitty have a pretty passionate love for all things Yu-Gi-Oh. I once hosted a family Yu-Gi-Oh tournament for my family as a birthday gift. For my own birthday. That’s how passionate I am about children’s card games. Yeah, it’s pretty serious. So the recent influx of figures from the card game/manga/show has been a gift from the heavens for me. So many Dark Magician Girl figures! And of course I was maximum hype for the Max Factory version of her. But when we last saw her, the paint looked very lackluster and I was very worried. But at NYCC, it’s like a whole new figure! Her colors are indeed more pastel than neon, but the depth of shading is great and she looks pretty vibrant. Was it really bad lighting at the last event? Did they redo her paint? Who cares, she’s lovely! Oh, and the Yugi figma is here too. No new updates, just a closer look at the unpainted sculpt!

  • It’s been a good week for Yu-Gi-Oh news! First we found out that Kotobukiya would be making a new Dark Magician Girl figure, and now Max Factory’s version of her is painted. I have to say that I was super hyped after we got the sculpt: I mean, it’s Max Factory, so I was expecting killer quality and lots of details. I was hoping for something that would totally blow me away. Well, she’s here and… I’m not particularly thrilled with how she came out. The paint looks vaguely metallic and cheap: it lacks the shading and detail Max Factory is known for. Also, the colors aren’t nearly bright enough! At least I have the old Kotobukiya one and the new version to look forward to… [via moeyo]

  • Dark Magician Girl has been pretty popular lately, with figures and figmas alike, but the very first nice scaled figure of her was made by Kotobukiya quite a few years ago. It was the first of their Yu-Gi-Oh line, which funnily enough went on to include only male characters from that point onward. But with the recent explosion in her popularity, I guess it was only a matter of time before they revisited the character! This time we’ll be getting her in a more animated pose, which I think fans will like–though of course I was a big fan of the original kneeling one. It’s safe to assume she’ll be 1/7 scale to fit with the rest of the line. I wonder if they’ll do any more of the girls? Maybe Mai? Or even more monsters?! [via Figure/GK]
