Darth Vader Archive

  • Well, tonight’s a big night for Star Wars fans with the Episode VIII trailer coming out during Monday Night Football, but that said, we can’t forget about the movies that have already come out before it and the merchandise from those! Kotobukiya brought the whole lot of their Episode VII: The Force Awakens ArtFX+ figures including the new and amazing First Order Stormtrooper FN-2199 that comes with a blaster and whatever the electro thing is that he used in his fight with Finn. There were also some new additions to the original trilogy line namely, a Return of the Jedi Luke to go with the Darth Vader that is already released (and seen with Luke, that’s not a new figure for those wondering), and also a new standing Emperor Palpatine and Imperial Guard set. I’m personally loving the Luke and Vader together as it recreates quite an iconic moment in the series and I’m also loving both Palpatine figures who would be great for randomly placing around your house to scare others. Check out the gallery below and expect even more of an onslaught of figures come next year after Episode VIII is out.

  • We saw a ton of new Star Wars info at Kotobukiya’s panel, and some of it was even out on display already! Like the Flametrooper, whose flamethrower is truly impressive as you can see here. Do you think it will be clear PVC? Because we all know how I feel about that. They had troopers of every possible combination (including a very cool storming-the-beach diorama from Rogue One), chopsticks of every variation, BB-8 ice cube trays, and much more!

  • Of all the licenses that Kotobukiya tackled at their panel, Star Wars definitely had the most news and new merchandise. They’ve always done a lot with the franchise, but given that we have new, actually good movies I guess it’s not really a shock that we’re not getting bombarded with it! There’s a lot to cover so let’s jump right in. We got the rough concept sculpts for the Finn & Rey ArtFX+, along with an announcement for Poe & BB-8 and Chewbacca and Han!. They also had the sculpt for the Obi-Wan ArtFX+, along with the tragically hilarious news that he will come with an empty cape to display if you prefer Dead-Kenobi. They had quite a few new troopers: thew Snowtrooper & Flametrooper 2 pack, FN-2199, Scarif Stormtrooper, Death Trooper 2-pack, and a Death Trooper ArtFX. They will also be expanding the Droid line with R4 and R5 sculpts!

  • Kotobukiya brought a rather massive amount of Star Wars news to their panel. Six (!!) new announcements, with one of them being a two-for-one… so seven figures in total. Phew. The first is a Barnes & Nobles exclusive & limited edition R2-C4 who will be hitting shelves winter 2014, so just in time for Christmas. Also joining the ArtFX+ line is K-3PO, a double pack of Snowtroopers, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and a double pack of Yoda and R2-D2 who will be Dagobah style (aka covered in mud). And the big announcement was for… yes, you guessed it from the header, a Darth Vader ArtFX!

  • I find your lack of faith disturbing that you didn’t expect Nendoroids of the Star Wars universe. With Star Wars Episode VII hype starting already and Good Smile Company working with the Disney conglomerate in the past, it’s no surprise that we’re getting a little chibi Darth Vader and Stormtrooper in the Nendoroid line. I love their tiny little versions, but what I really want to know is, do we got Death Star? [via Wonderful Hobby Life For You’s Twitter]

  • Han Solo and Chewbacca weren’t the only big disturbance in the force at Toy Fair, there was one much bigger, and… tastier…? The light up lightsaber chopsticks are finally finished! Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker versions will be available in March for $14.99 each, and, having held a pair and used them, I’ve gotta say, they’re just as easy to use as the original non-glowing sort. Also on hand were the usual Stormtroopers, Sandtroopers, General Grievous, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and more as well as Jaina Solo and Mara Jade bishoujos. Last, but not least, was the teaser for Luke and Leia’s ArtFX+ figures, who should hopefully be shown off soon.

  • Star Wars and Kotobukiya go hand and hand as seen by their new announcement of A New Hope ArtFX+ figures, but that wasn’t all that was new at their panel. Some new merchandise is on the way in the form of Stormtrooper, Darth Vader, and C-3PO business card holders as well as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader light up lightsaber chopsticks. We also got another peek at Jango Fett and General Grievous, both of whom we got a detailed look at back at Toy Fair. The big new announcement was that the fan choice winner for the next Trooper set is the Sandtrooper and they’ll be coming in two different ways: a Sandtrooper Squad Leader two-pack and a Sandtrooper Sergeant single pack. The star of New York Comic Con, the exclusive R2-Q5, which we saw back at Toy Fair, was also shown off and an international version with a silver coin was announced. Rounding things off, Jaina Solo and Mara Jade’s bishoujos were shown off and we finally got a glimpse of Mara’s backside, which definitely has the Shunya vibe to it.

  • Erick Scarecrow of ESC-Toy always brings a ton of items to conventions, but this year seems to be a record with how many different pieces he’s decided to show up with, and if you’re looking to score some of these for yourself, you’ll have lots of opportunities to! On Friday, Erick will be signing from 3-4 PM at Clutter’s booth (#504) and on Saturday, he’ll be over at the Tenacious Toys booth (#208) from 5-6 PM. First up is a piece that can’t be bought, but can only be won: an edition of 5 custom Daryl Dixon Funko figures from The Walking Dead with custom paint to make him look like the Colossal Titan from Attack on Titan. Why? I have no clue, but it looks pretty cool, so let’s all just go with it. You can win one by buying any ESC-Toy piece at the con from the many booths selling his work or via his website’s releases during the period. First up in releases is the Dali x Crow Bear Blue Hour version, which will be an edition of 20 that will retail for $30 and will be available at Clutter’s booth during Erick’s signing. Also available at Clutter’s booth will be the Little Spiker print, available beginning Preview Night, for $25 and will be an edition of 25 and the I’m Your Puppet print, also for $25, but an edition of 20. Next up, over at the Tenacious Toys booth will be the Bloody Lurker collaboration with Frombies that is limited to 7 pieces for $75 each and available during his signing as well as a Solid Snake print from Metal Gear Solid available on Preview Night for an unknown price, but will be an edition of 20, and a Fr*eza print edition of 10 for $25. Over at Big Kev’s Geek Stuff’s booth (#Z16-Z17), some more prints will be on hand for the comic fans: a One P*ece x Luffybot print, also an edition of 10 for $25, and a Batgirl print, edition of 20 for $25. If you’re not able to make it to the convention though, don’t sweat! A ton of releases will be available online, today, Wednesday the 9th at 12:00 PM EST. The Mr. 2600 Classic version (20 pieces, $30 each), Leatherface Hooper customs (12 pieces $30 each), Camo Maru customs (6 pieces, $30 each), Little Spiker Mossdown (21 pieces, $100 each),  S. Maria Camo (7 pieces, $225 each), Final Fantasy Shinra Storm Cloud custom (1 piece, price TBA), Final Fantasy Judge’s Rage custom (1 piece, $325), Star Wars Camo Vader custom (1 piece, price TBA), Metal Gear Solid Split Camo Snake custom (1 piece, $325), and Wet Suit Maria Supu (3 pieces, $100 each) will all be available at that time. I know I have my eyes on the Dali x Crow Bear for sure!

  • The first time Stephen and I did any in-person event coverage it was Toy Fair 2009, and our first booth was Kotobukiya’s. Back then their only Star Wars merchandise was their awesome lightsaber chopsticks: while those are still in production, they’ve come a long way! This year at SDCC they had a staggering number of figures from the franchise. Everything from pretty girls to monsters! They had the full art for Mara Jade’s Bishoujo along with Jaina Solo (review)–I wonder how long it will take Mara to get sculpted? They had some of their older statues, like the amazing Darth Maul, and they also premiered their NYCC 2013 exclusive: R2-Q5! D’aww, evil robots. Last but most definitely not least is the announcement of several A New Hope ArtFX+ figures: Luke, Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca! [Pictures courtesy of our lovely SDCC corespondent, Missy!]

  • I am always up for some wacky accessories, like a Teddie that will hold your glasses or a glowing lightsaber umbrella. Because on a crowded rainy day in the city, what is better than a giant glowing device to attract attention to yourself?! I know right, this idea is genius. Blister Direct (which has to be the stupidest name for a toy company) is making lightsaber umbrellas in both blue (Luke Skywalker) and red (Darth Vader). They’re actually pretty damn awesome, and hopefully not powered by something that will electrocute you. They retail for ¥3,970 each and will come out in July with pre-orders for the blue version here and the red version here. I don’t know if these are quite as cool as the umbrella that’s also Saber’s sword, but they are definitely a cool way to show off your fandom! Or, you know, protect the galaxy from evil.
