DC Bombshells Archive

  • It’s no secret that the world of statues is not exactly my bread & butter. I usually find them way out of budget and not quite as detailed as the (much cheaper) PVC counterparts. But there’s one line I have always adored: DC’s Bombshells! They’re just so campy in the best way, and they always pull out great & creative sculpts for it. This year they had quite a few out and about. Including the biggest announcement so far: Aquaman. That’s right, we now have male Bombshells! Sexism is over, because we can now get topless dudes with our scantily clad ladies. Batman and Nightwing next please. They also had Zatanna, Harley Quinn, Vixen, Jesse Quick (the Flash), and Starfire out on display. Check them all out after the jump!

  • By far my favorite statue line (from any company) is DC’s Bombshells. We’ve seen a lot of them over the years, and I’ve fallen harder for them as time has gone on. I just love the idea of pinup-type art of these classic superheores, done in a really elegant and inventive way. The focus on Toy Fair was on three of their newer girls: Raven, Powergirl, and Bumblebee (who is also the first black Bombshell!). I love how true they all are to character: Raven the slinky mage, Powergirl showing off her strength, Bumblebee all happy and perky. I want them all!

  • You certainly can’t say that DC neglects their female characters… when it comes to merchandise. In fact, they have several lines dedicated just to the girls! My favorite of these is definitely the Bombshells Line, a newer creation that takes the characters we know and love and puts a retro spin on them. At Toy Fair they had a bevy of beautiful ladies: newspaper girl Lois Lane, baseball player Batwoman, lounge diva Catwoman, and the star of the show: a Harley & Joker statue featuring a delicious inverse of the traditional “guy bends girl over for kiss” imagery. This makes Joker the first guy to appear in the line! Honestly not too sure how I feel about that, or Harley’s egregious cleavage, but you have to admit that this is a statement piece to end all statement pieces. Just imagine it on a shelf! Perfection, puddin’.

  • DC’s Bombshell line has been a perennial favorite of mine, combining two things I love: superheroines and pinup girls! They had three of these beauties at Toy Fair that we got to take a closer look at. The first is Black Canary, who we have seen before, but since she is my favorite in the line it’s always nice to see her again! Then there’s Stargirl: while I don’t dig her outfit, I love that her pose is a shout-out to the traditional pinup witch. Last and certainly not least is their new addition to the line, Zatanna. She might actually trump Black Canary as my favorite! They, of course, kept her magician theme though they brought it to a sultry, stage-magician place that is totally fantastic. The rose collar, her tattoos, the clear smoke… it’s so gorgeous! Not to mention the amazing job they did on her face. Dem. Lips. And she has a BUNNY COMPANION! Note that since this is their one prototype at the moment, so her fuzzy companion has suffered a mishap and his tie is broken. It obviously won’t be on the finished piece!

  • DC Collectibles had their whole Bombshells line on display at San Diego Comic Con: Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Batgirl, and their newest addition Black Canary! They started out strong and while I feel they floundered a bit in the middle I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m so in love with their interpretation of Dinah I want to run away with her and elope and move to a Swiss chateau. I think as individual pieces they’re lovely, but they really shine as a group: they’re just so different from everything else on the market (statues, vinyl and PVC included) that they really pop in a group. I’ve got Pokemon syndrome going on: gotta catch ’em all! [Pictures courtesy of our lovely SDCC corespondent, Missy!]

  • I’ve lamented the fact that DC Collectibles’ last two Bombshells, Harley Quinn and Batgirl, seemed less than inspired. Compared to Wondy, Supergirl and Poison Ivy they were downright lackluster, though the outfits were pretty nice looking. Well, it seems like they listened to complaints because the 6th girl in the line might be the best yet! It’s Black Canary all done up in 40’s pinup style, but they’ve done a very different take on her vocal abilitites–she’s a songstress! I love love love her outfit, in fact I’m very tempted to cosplay this particular rendition of Dinah (even though I’d make a terrible blonde). She’ll be on display at SDCC if you want to check her out in person! [via Statue Forum]

  • When we first saw DC Collectibles’ Bombshell line, I was totally smitten by their creativity and originality. Stephen and I don’t have a lot of comic statues in our collection mainly because they seem to lack a certain spark when compared to PVC and vinyl: it’s just comic characters standing around. But this line brought something different and unique, which continued with the 3rd release, Poison Ivy. However, I was a bit hesitant when the 4th, Harley Quinn, was just… standing there. Sure, her outfit was cool, but the pose didn’t really seem to be referencing anything notable. And my fears are confirmed with Batgirl. Okay, the outfit is rocking, but aside from that she could be part of the Covergirl line. Where’s the awesome posing we saw with Supergirl?! I want Harley riding a bomb, Batgirl posing like she’s about to jump off a roof! Get it together DC! [via NY Post]

  • So far, DC’s Bombshell line, which is based on classic pinup art, has been nothing but a smashing success. The first two, Supergirl and Wonder Woman, were absolutely spectacular. Seriously, I was pawing at the glass when we first saw them. They couldn’t be released fast enough! Granted, I was a bit less enthusiastic about Poison Ivy–something about her didn’t seem quite as magical, but she still had a ton of fans, and rightfully so! Of course I was over the moon with excitement when we found out that Harley Quinn would be next. We were told there would be a bomb theme, but it seems that got dropped somewhere along the way. In my mind I had this fantastic image of Harley actually riding a bomb, like the pinup girls on the side of WWII planes. Imagine that! So for me, the final product doesn’t quite live up to my expectations. She’s nice, but not as nice as Supergirl, Wonder Woman and Poison Ivy: there’s a spark with the other 3 that seems to be missing here, which is sad because I adore Harley. Hopefully she looks nicer when we get to check her out in person at SDCC! [via DC’s Facebook]
