Square-Enix’s DC line has always been a head-scratcher for me. The designs, from the first ones they put out to the Tetsuya Nomura designs, are so very strange and out-there. Maybe that’s the appeal! But they’re really pushing the boundary of “what even am I looking at” with their new Harley Quinn & The Joker. Because these seemingly normal Play-Arts Kai transform into… robot Harley and robot Joker. Wat.
The Joker has some strange exo-suit going on and Harley looks like an extra from Bubblegum Crisis. I… I kind of love it. It’s just SO weird, and the Joker has about 20 thousand extra heads. Part of me is like “why” and the other part is all “think of the toy photography opportunities!!”

It’s no secret that the world of statues is not exactly my bread & butter. I usually find them way out of budget and not quite as detailed as the (much cheaper) PVC counterparts. But there’s one line I have always adored: DC’s Bombshells! They’re just so campy in the best way, and they always pull out great & creative sculpts for it.
This year they had quite a few out and about. Including the biggest announcement so far: Aquaman. That’s right, we now have male Bombshells! Sexism is over, because we can now get topless dudes with our scantily clad ladies. Batman and Nightwing next please. They also had Zatanna, Harley Quinn, Vixen, Jesse Quick (the Flash), and Starfire out on display. Check them all out after the jump!

I’ve never really understood the ‘Marvel vs DC’ mentality (don’t most comic fans read them both?) but if I was absolutely forced to pick I would be on Team DC. Because I’m basic as heck and I love Batman. So sue me! And, of course, I love me a good DC figure. Like the new Katana art they had out!
Kotobukiya had quite a few DC figures on display at Toy Fair, like the huge 1/6 scale Justice League (well, at least Batman/Superman/Flash/Wonder Woman/Green Lantern). And Bishoujos Harley Quinn, Wonder Girl, the Killing Joke statue (which is getting a re-release), the Villains line in all their evil glory, and some of the classic cartoony ArtFX+.

Comic-based TV shows are so popular now that you really have to work hard to avoid them. Between Marvel and DC, it seems like at least 40% of new shows are based around comic franchises. A stark change from 10 years ago, no?
So it’s no surprise that Kotobukiya has been hard at work on their DC TV show line! We’ve got Gotham (James Gordon & Oswald Cobblepot), The Flash, and Arrow on display. And one big surprise reveal: they had Supergirl there! The detail they get with 3D sculpting is so amazing I actually though her skirt was real fabric at first glance.

There are a lot of villains in the DC-verse, but it seems like most of the popular ones are men. So it was no surprise that Kotobukiya’s Villains Forever line was all dudes. However, while she wasn’t officially announced, Harley WAS part of that initial art announcement (though in her New 52 style, which is this obviously not).
So it was great to see her out as a surprise announcement at NYCC. They went for a very different style with her: the face is much more realistic and less comic-y. It’s beautifully detailed, especially given how tiny she is–the ArtFX+ line is 1/10 scale. And we got some good related news at the panel: they are considering doing the other Gotham City Sirens, Poison Ivy and Catwoman, to go along with her!

Given the huge number of DC movies on the horizon, I’m sure by next NYCC Kotobukiya’s booth will be flooded with them (though let’s be honest, I’m only hoping for Aquaman & Mera). But this year there was only one: the hugely impressive Batman vs Superman duo. I sure do hate that stumpy batsuit but it looks great on this scale!
We also had Bishoujos. Lots of Bishoujos. Both Harleys, Black Canary, Wonder Girl. We had the villains ArtFX+ (including their new star Harley Quinn), the Super Powers line, and their larger scale ArtFX statues. Check them all out below!

Kotobukiya has done a lot of comic toys (that’s something of an understatement, huh?), but so far we’ve been basically restricted to actual comic and movie appearances. With the new wave of comic-based tv shows it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing more and more of them in the figure world, but I definitely didn’t expect one this big from Koto.
They’ve announced license acquisition for Gotham, Green Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. Phew, all 4 at once! No word on what exactly we’ll be getting. ArtFX? ArtFX+? Statues? Bishoujos?! It’s a mystery, but one I’m excited to uncover!

We saw the new Marvel Bishoujo announcement, so it’s time for the DC one! And to the surprise of no one it’s Katana. Years ago it probably would have come as a shock, but since her Suicide Squad appearance it seems inevitable that we’ll get a ton more merch of her. I wonder if we’ll get an alternate unmasked head, or if it will be a totally masked Bishoujo? Because that would be something we haven’t really seen before.

Kotobukiya’s ArtFX+ Villains line has had a lot of great additions so far, but it’s no surprise that their Joker has been the most popular one. So it should also be no surprise that Puddin’s lady love is joining the line! Harley’s popularity is at an all-time high thanks to Suicide Squad, so I’m sure we’re going to be seeing a ton of figures of her…. in that terrible outfit.
Thankfully, this is classic Harley in her harlequin outfit! I’m not sure how I feel about the whole “holding up her butt with a hammer” thing because man, that seems uncomfortable. Just think of the splinters! But I just adore this outfit, so I’m really happy to be seeing more of it in any context.

I’ve really done a heel face turn on Kotobukiya’s version 2 Harley Quinn Bishoujo: my feelings have gone from annoyance at the idea to true love of the execution. If I had one small complaint it was that I’m not a huge fan of the red/blue color scheme, but that is being fixed with her special NYCC colorway! Which will be classic red and black, of course.
If you’re not going to the event, don’t worry! Harley is limited and exclusive, and of course will be easy to just pick up in person at their booth, but there’s a way for all Bishoujo fans in the US to get her. Pre-orders are open on their site right now for $74.99. They’ll probably go fast, so don’t hesitate if you want this release!
