Dead or Alive Archive

  • I remember the dark times when Good Smile Company didn’t come to US events. Thankfully those days are over, because their booth is usually the toy highlight of any convention! And they really brought it for NYCC this year with not one but two separate booth displays. They had a lot of brand-new goodies, like the Anniversary Miku (look at that hair!!), figma Genji, and the sculpt for the Breath of the Wild Guardian Nendoroid. It’s always nice to be able to see figures in person, it’s quite a different experience–for example, I wasn’t really sold on Marie Rose’s colors at all when the promotional shots came out, but I was totally won over when I finally got to see her. She might be coming to my pre-order list!

  • Every year I feel like figmas at Wonder Festival just kind of try to outdo the previous Wonder Festival’s weirdness and randomness and this year is no exception. While we’ve got our standards here like a new Racing Miku and a new Miku variation from V4X and the female main character from Pokemon Sun and Moon that we already showed you, Li from Cardcaptor Sakura, Nero from Fate/EXTELLA, Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh!, Kaban from Kemono Friends, a handful of new Kantai Collection additions, and some more Little Armory additions, the rest seem to be a bit all over the place. Between the Dark Souls III figma and Kasumi from Dead or Alive, we’ve got some great video game additions that are less expected. Then we’ve also got the amazing announcement of a Tony Taka’s PANDORA figma, which should be great! Now in unexpected land we’ve got Arashi from Game Center Arashi, figma Kurogo, who just appears to be a random ninja, Goro Inogashira from Kodoku No Gurume, who just looks like a random middle aged Japanese guy in a suit, the wrestler Masahiro Chono, two figmas from Arms Note, and last, but not least, completely out of left field, a character from the 1977 movie Village of Eight Gravestones. Then the art line is being continued with Yuurei-zu and Nike and we’re also getting a figma of higma, the traditional bear carving. Check them all out in the gallery below! • As usual, Max Factory had a small but excellently sculpted bundle of figures for Wonder Festival. We’ve seen the Mikus (my favorite from them), but there’s lots more like… Rurouni Kenshin? So many surprise boys at this event! The Eriri and Megumi from Saenai Heroine are finally sculpted, as is Ai-chan from Tawawa on Monday whose breasts seem to be escaping from her shirt, poor dear. Their Marie Rose is finally painted and… I no longer want her? Just a garish color combo. In other fighting game news, they are doing a Renewal version of their infamous Kasumi. Morrigan when?! Iowa is also painted, along with the tiny Kemono Friends figures. For announcements, we have Jeanne d’Arc Alter dress version, whose art is just stunning. [via whl4u]

  • For a few years now I have bemoaning the downfall of festival exclusives. It seems like companies never have anything big and fancy. Well, GSC is making me eat my words for this Summer Wonder Festival because they pulled out ALL the stops. First off, finally the return of scaled figures! And what an unexpected one. Max Factory is re-releasing their famous (and rare) Kasumi in 1/20 scale in the PLAMAX line. She’ll retail for ¥3,000. Kaiyodo will also have a new Wonda-chan for ¥9,800. We have quite a few Nendoroids. There’s the updated Reimu from Touhou Project (¥5,000) and a set of Asuna & Kirito O.S Versions (¥5,500 for the set). Sadly, these will not be available online and are only at Wonder Festival, Anime Expo, Japan Expo, CCG Expo, Shanghai ChinaJoy, and 2017 18th Comic Exhibition. Everything else will be available online right after the event, which is July 30th. As for regular Nendoroids, there’s a super cute Yuri Katsuki who will get a matching Vincent. Then we have the Nendoroid More Dress Up Wedding Elegant Version (what a mouthful) and the penguin face case which I really need in my life. Last, but not least, is WATER GUN SABER FIGMA. Amazing. Perfect. Wonderful. ¥5,500. For the first time in a while, I want the vast majority of these! [via whl4u]

  • FREEing seems to only make 3 things: huge bunny girls, tiny swimsuit girls, and medium-sized yukata girls. And sometimes boys in various sizes (though, so far, never a bunny one!). This year, yeah, that’s all they had. Lots ‘o bunnies, swimsuits, and yukatas. For some characters, like Rem & Ram, you get both mega bunny size AND mini swimsuit size! We’ve got some bunny-sized Muv-Luv girls (Yui Takamura, Ilfriede von Feulner), Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! 2 bunnies (Aqua & Megumin), Highschool DxD swimsuit girls (Rias & Akeno) and the surprising addition of Shinji & Kaworu in yukatas. As for announcements, we have 2 Dead or Alive bunnies (Marie Rose, Honoka), 2 Girls und Panzer bunnies (Yukari & Kay), and Kaito. Man, I love how popular Marie Rose suddenly is! [UPDATE] FREEIng is doing another tan waifu, aka Thailand Racing Miku 2016! SO CUTE [UPDATE 2] Added some stragglers to the gallery [via AmiAmi’s Twitter]

  • The vast majority of Kotobukiya’s figures sold in Japan are based on anime, game, and manga licenses. But of course in the US, the focus is more on comic and movie toys. But they still brought a few of their cute boys and girls! Especially because the ArtFX J line is increasingly popular in the US. They had figures like Genjo Sanzo from Saiyuki Reload Blast, their new Lelouch, the beautiful new Tony Taka girl, Emilia from Re:Zero, and their realistic Marie Rose from Dead or Alive. Their new Atem was also out on display, but sadly they’re making some sculpt tweaks so he was Do Not Photograph.

  • Max Factory has already shown off their Kantai Collection and IDOLM@STER cuties, and it seems like their line for the upcoming year is going to be dominated by just a few franchises. A large chunk of it was Vocaloid related (Heart Hunter Miku, finally, and a new Luka!) or Fate/Stay Night. We have the amazing header Jeanne d’Arc, along with Grand Order’s Berserker and an announced Assassin. We have two of the To LOVEru lingerie girls (Nana and Yuuki), and two Seventh Dragon figures (sculpted Samurai and announced Mage). They’ll be doing a figFIX of Honoka, along with matching figures of the rest of the Love Live! girls. Surprisingly, DoA’s Marie Rose is getting a lovingly sculpted figure, and Hotaru Shidare is painted. Check ’em out in the gallery! [via Wonderful Hobby Life]

  • If there is a current show or franchise you enjoy that’s popular, you can almost always bet that Griffon has something in the works for it. Whether it will actually be good… well, that’s another story. Some of their figures at CharaHobby (that Kirino!) look amazing, others… not so much. We’ve got Sword Art Online, OreImo, Queen’s Blade, Persona, Date A Live, Rozen Maiden, Shining Blade, Sonico, Infinite Stratos,  Dead or Alive, Highschool DxD, Kikou Shoujo wa Kizutsukanai, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, Girls und Panzer, Kikou Shoujo wa Kizutsukanai and more in the gallery below!
