Dengeki Archive

  • Dengeki’s Idol Asuna went up for orders naked–or at least, with a naked sculpt! No-paint pre-orders aren’t terribly uncommon for exclusives, but it’s hard to plunk down $100+ for a figure before even seeing what the final version should look like. Especially one as tiny as Asuna! And even though I was in love with the concept art, there was no way I’d order her without at least some proof that she’d be totally awesome. Well, we finally have painted pictures and she looks quite nice! Not mind-blowingly awesome or anything, but a very decent and pretty paint job. I still want her, but the price is just too high for my wallet. Which is a shame, because the soft pinks are so cute! Did any of you Plastikitties fork over the money for this cutie? [via Dengeki]

  • I have been lusting after this figure from the moment I saw the art: I mean, I’m not a huge Asuna fan but I can’t resist all those pink ruffles. Given that all her previews were at Dengeki I assumed she’d be exclusive, and lo and behold… she is! And she’s going up for order with only the grey sculpt, no paint. I guess they’re just very secure in the idea that SAO fans will purchase her without seeing anything near the final product? Granted, the sculpt does look great: lots of movement and very crisp. But her asking price is  ¥11,000 for only a 1/8 scale figure, pretty steep when she doesn’t even have any damn paint. However, she is being manufactured by Stronger who did the Maiko Madoka series and Devil Homura, so I bet she’ll be stunning. She’s set for a June release and you can pre-order her at Big In Japan, Nippon-Yasan, or whatever your favorite proxy is.

  • We have seen a lot of different versions of Asuna from Sword Art Online. Regular, swimsuit, motherly, Titania, Undine swimsuit… but you know what we definitely haven’t seen before? An Idol Version! Yes, like IDOLM@STER and Love Live. Like, Asuna as a pop singer. Because that totally makes sense. Well, canon or not, Dengeki is working on a figure of Asuna in a stage outfit that I just can’t help but like. Maybe it’s my weakness for pink frills, but I actually really want this. Sadly it’ll probably be an exclusive, sigh. [via Dropbox]

  • Recently I’ve had to become a very picky collector. One figure per character, unless it’s someone I really love, and we rarely have more than 8 figures per month. If you’ve seen our loot shots, you know that this is REALLY cutting down hard for us. But of course the version of a character I love the most usually rends out to be the most expensive or, perish the thought, an exclusive. Well, we’ve got a 2-for-1 here. Embrace Japan’s Sinon is a hefty ¥13800, which is almost justified by her scale (1/6) and height (over 9 inches kneeling!), but she’s also… sob… an exclusive. Which means with fees and shipping she’ll probably cost you a little under $190. BUT WHY? Pre-Order At: Big In Japan, Nippon-Yasan [via Dengeki]

  • I’m sure you guys remember how excited I was at both the announcement and sculpt for this figure. I mean, wow, it’s that chick from the show! With the things! Yeah! Well, she’s painted and stuff. Yup. And I must admit, she turned out better than I thought–except for her eyes, which I find incredibly unnerving, and her hands which look like playdough. But there are a surprising amount of things that turned out well on miss Miyuki Shiba: the base and her cape-thing are gorgeous, though that might be my love of clear PVC talking. And you can take the cape off to get a view of her non-existent butt! Surprisingly, she’s manufactured by Embrace Japan (plot twist!) and will retail for an insane ¥11,000 with a January release date. And, you know, she’s an exclusive. Honestly, given the popularity of Mahouka I think we will be seeing a LOT of her at summer WonFest so this is probably an easy pass even if you are a big fan of the show. [via Dengeki]

  • Ah, KanColle. Ruining wallets and crushing dreams the world over. Most of the girls from the, uh, card game/video game/anime/whatever are very elaborate, which means they need pretty elaborate sculpts. There are also a million different characters, so unless you like the popular ones your sol. Tenryuu happens to be one of my favorites, and I’m a bit crushed that the first figure of her we are getting is from Dengeki. The sculpt is… okay, I guess, and she looks cute paired with Tatsuta. But is it just me, or are their heads wildly out of size with eachother? And Tatsuta’s hair sculpt is rather flat. Plus I bet these two are going to be exclusive, sigh. But thankfully ques Q has announced a Tenryuu! And a Tatsuta! Actually, ques has announced figures of pretty much every popular character. They must be smoking something up in those offices. [via Dengeki]

  • Remember when Dengeki announced two figures of Miyuki Shiba from Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei? Don’t worry, I didn’t either until I saw this post. But wow, here she is! Sculpted! Well, one of them is sculpted–the clothed one. ASCII Media Works will be producing her, and they sure did a bang-up job on the sculpt. Just kidding, it kind of looks like she’s wearing a potato sack. Wow, what amazing clothing details. Good job. I must admit that her base is awesome, but other than this it’s pretty much the most generic anime figure ever. You picture PVC, you picture this dull figure. But, um, she’s 1/7 instead of 1/8, so she has that going for her. [via Dengeki]

  • What would happen if you took Code Geass, removed everything that made it remotely unique, copied character designs from other shows, tossed in an absolutely ridiculous magic system and turned every character into a pathetic trope? You’d get Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (aka An Irregular At Magic Highschool). Seriously, it’s just tropes upon tropes. It’s hilariously bad. The two main characters are Lulu and Suzaku. But it’s also one of the most popular shows of the season, so of course the heroine Miyuki Shiba (who looks suspiciously like Nagisa from Phantasy Star) is getting TWO figures from Dengeki (since when do they make figures?) already. One in her class uniform, one in a revealing robe. Oh hooray can’t wait to see GSC, Alter and Koto take her on wow such anticipation. [via Dengeki]

  • Kotobukiya is kind of the reigning champ of swimsuit figures. There are many companies who make more (Wave, anyone?) but few who make them better. I suppose Alter might top them in quality, but they release swimsuit girls far too infrequently to vie for the title. Koto, however, puts them out with gusto and they always look so darn cute and manage to have appealing sculpts. I blame my entire swimsuit girl collection on their Nono Nekomiya and Minato Nagase. This time they are taking on Eri Ayase from Love Live! School Idol Project. This is a character I really wouldn’t usually be interested in but oh my god this figure is just so cute. Sadly, she’s an exclusive, and her base retail price of ¥8,300 for a 1/8 scale figure is pretty high to start with. [via Dengeki]

  • Misaka Mikoto from To Aru Kagaku no Railgun seems to be the reigning champ of swimsuit figures. This is odd for so many reasons: first off, there’s nothing particularly special about her character design, and let’s face it: usually characters who get a lot of swimsuit figures are busty (Kanu, Tamaki, etc) or have other special attributes like craazy colored hair or wild personalities. Second, the franchise’s popularity has pretty much peaked: it doesn’t have the lasting longevity of something like Haruhi, and we don’t even get many figures of her! But for some reason, companies keep putting out figures of Misaka in beach ware: two companies in particular, Wave and Kotobukiya, and usually as Dengeki exclusives. Last time it was for Dengeki’s 20th anniversary, and this figure too will be a Dengeki exclusive. It’s actually quite nice, with two faces and a cast-offable shirt. But who is the manufacturer? It’s a mystery! My money is on Koto, because the sculpt seems a bit too intricate for Wave, but only time will tell. [via Figure/GK]
