@GeekeryDo: @mikeyturvey I agree with you. I stopped reading them because I got tired of it, though @Sir_Narwhal is correct that it's normal for comics.

@GeekeryDo: @Sir_Narwhal @mikeyturvey yeh but that's just one arc and it's easy to read it all since, as you said, it's been put together like that.

@NFern0: @Sir_Narwhal Sounds like (ohoho) specialist equipment. Black Friday is more mass consumer oriented isn't it?

Alter has been releasing Evangelion figures almost since their inception, but in a totally sporadic and strange fashion. We got a Rei a long long time ago, and an Asuka still more recently but also a few years ago. So you’d think Mari would be next… but instead they’ve decided to grant my one true wish, and we are getting cat hat Asuka!
So what if Eva Q is total weird nonsense?! CAT HAT. ASUKA. Amazing. Thank you, based figure gods. I worship at the altar of Alter once again.

It’s been a while since we featured a prize fair on the site, since they’ve been dull dull dull. Evangelion, Evangelion, and more Evangelion. But the 34th has some lovely surprises, like… a Cardcaptor Sakura prize figure! For real. Look at the header. It’s not a mirage, it’s real life, and it’s glorious.
Of course there are other figure (but who cares SAKURA), like… tons of Attack on Titan stuff! Also the usual suspects: Vocaloid, Madoka, Macross, Yuru Yuri, Evangelion (even I’m tired of it…), Bakemonogatari, To Aru, Sword Art Online, Kantai Collection, and… Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (finally!).

[note: this post contains Evangelion Q spoilers, read at your own risk!]
I’m sure a lot of people groaned and rolled their eyes when Wave announced they’d be doing a figure of Rei in her Evangelion Q outfit (along with Asuka & Mari). But I can never get enough Eva, and Rei’s new plugsuit is totally bitching! Actually, it’s technically a new Rei too–this isn’t the same clone we’ve seen before! Totally different character! That acts exactly the same, only this time with even less personality. I bet you didn’t even think that was possible.
This is pretty much just a repaint of their old Rei with a little bit of resculpting going on, but she does look sweet if a bit plain in the pose department. But the price is low, so I’m not going to complain (too much). And she comes with a backpack! Probably for all the books Shinji keeps trying to force her to read. Evangelion Q: Eva, only with more books and music this time & less fighting and drama. So exciting!

Ah, Sega. Definitely the best prize figure maker in my opinion, but I have a love-hate relationship with prize figures. (Also, just so you know, I originally wrote love-hat relationship. Love Hat.) I love how cheap they are, the variety, the clean sculpts. But… I never display them. Well, almost never–I do have the recent hair-in-the-wind Asuka out proud among my regular Eva girls, and she fits in perfectly. But in my limited display space, they just… don’t fit in. So the boxes collect dust. But they’re so cheap, how can I resist! Space hogging boxes, you flood my apartment. I hate you. I hat you! And yet.. I love you.
I mean, look at all this awesome. The Mikus! Racing 2011, swimming, regular, an announcement for 2012 racing. The Eva girls! Plugsuits, racing queens. There’s Strike Witches and OreImo and Yuru Yuri, there’s Harlock, it’s a cornucopia of delights. And I totally don’t need any of them. But I’ll probably order, like half.

Ever since Yamato switched their name to Arcadia, I’ve been feeling a lack of oomph, which is solidified by their Wonder Festival lineup. There’s like… nothing new. Bad Arcadia, bad! They don’t even have Shunya’s Soniko painted! Well, they do at least have a new Soniko–an action figure, part of their Neuromancer line, in her sailor outfit. Which we have seen zero figures of, so at least it’s something fresh!
They also had Neuromancer Rei and Asuka out, so while it’s been 3 years (possibly 4 years?) since their announcement… they are still working on them! No Rei’s not painted, these things take time! Yeah, 3 years.. to paint a figure… what are you, Orchid Seed? The only thing here I can get really excited about is their painted Blanc Neige who looks even better than the raw sculpt. Now to wait 6 months for orders…

Do you like yukatas? Do you like pretty girls in yukaas? How about… sets of pretty girls in yukatas? THEN MAN OH MAN IS FREEing THE COMPANY FOR YOU. Thought the just announced set of Soniko pals was enough? Wrong. What about the Madoka set? I mean, she is here and painted, along with the Homura sculpt? WRONG. What about the Fate/Stay Night ones, I mean we haven’t seen Saber Alter yet! Oops well they forgot about her. But we DO have: Tamaki Kousaka; Inori; Nagi from Kannagi; Fate, Nanoha & Hayate (announced); Sasami Tsukuyomi and Mashiro Shiina. All. In. Yukatas.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. Yagyu Jubei (colored!), Rin, Len & Kaito (BOYS?!) in Senbonzakura gear (announced, no sculpts), Percival from Eiyuu*Senki (announced), Kaworu Nagisa (sculpted, uhnf), Rei Ayanami (announced), bunnygirl Rias Gremony (sculpted & huge), the ribbon gals from Kono Naka ni Hitori (painted), Akiho Senomiya (sculpted) and Akiko Himenokouji (sculpted) along with all the Sword Art Online figures. Holy crap FREEing, slow it down a little! Also, that Tama-nee. Be still, my heart.
[UPDATE] Saber Alter is indeed sculpted, but wsas marked DNF so we can’t show her off.

We tend to focus on PVC coverage during Wonder Festival because, well… those are the things most of us can buy! But really, there are about ten times as many garage kits at the event as pre-painted PVC. Actually… that might be underestimating it, the garage kit area is HUGE!
We’ve already shown you some of the kits that will be at the event like Purple Heart, Yagyuu Toshiyuki’s Marisa Kirisame, an acrobatic Saber Bride, chibi Saber Lily, Toda Satoshi’s terrifying Passionlip, and Coneckers’ Momiji. But of course there are a ton more, and we’ve got some really lovely kits this time around. My personal favorites are Vispo’s astonishing Jeanne d’Arc & her horse–though Jeanne seems very popular this WonFest!–, the bathing suit IDOLM@STER trio, the gory Labrys, and Atelier Hiro’s punk rock Miku Hatsune. And my oh my do we have a lot of Mikus. Chec them all out (and plenty more) in the gallery!

Kotobukiya used to fill their event booths up mainly with anime figures, but recently their US booths have focused more and more on US licenses–which obviously seems like a natural change. But at big events like SDCC where they have a ton of space they bust out the anime ladies (and guys!).
This time around they had three of my favorite figures from them this year: Mistral, Asuna (review) and Asuka, along with a lot of the ArtFX J line. Yugi (review), Dark Magician (review), Joey, Vash, Kaiba (review) and Dark Magician Girl were all on display along with a few other assorted ladies. Check them out after the jump!

As much as I like bashing the “story” in Evangelion Q, I do love the costumes. Especially Asuka’s. Because if there is anything better than Asuka, it’s Asuka with a hat with cat ears on it! So far we haven’t seen any figures with the cat hat, though thankfully that is about to change! Sort of. I really want a scaled figure (prize figures don’t count), and this is an action figure: part of Medicom’s very expensive 1/6 scale line of Real Action Heroes.
But wait, it gets worse! Asuka is a super limited edition and exclusive to Summer Wonder Festival 2013. And she retails for ¥18,900. WHY. Cat Hat Asuka, I just want to love you. Why are the figure gods so determined to keep us apart.
