  • Final Fantasy is the backbone of Square-Enix’s merchandise (would it kill them to do some Dragon Quest Play Arts goodness), so of course they had lots from the venerable series on display at NYCC. My favorite is, of course, the fat Chocobo plush (which yes I have on order) and the insanely huge Bahamut Play Arts Of course they had the recent Final Fantasy X figures out as well, along with the usual Tonberry and Moogle goodies. Because we all know you actually can never have enough Tonberry in your life.

  • You know, Square-Enix is always pumping out a ton of Final Fantasy merchandise but it always seems to be from VII, X, IV, VI, or that random fighting one. Never from my precious baby because people don’t like it and they have terrible taste while I sob in the corner over no Fran merchandise. But finally dark days are over. I’ve been waiting for this moment, and it is HERE. JUST LOOK. FRAN PLAY-ARTS. I’M GONNA DIE HAPPY. And there was some other stuff too like Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII, and Barret or whatever. I mean, Red XIII is my home(liondog) and it’s cool to see Barret getting some representation but WHATEVER FRAN I’M JUST GONNA DANCE AROUND MY APARTMENT ALL DAY [via Jeff Saylor]

  • Square-Enix had a bunch of Final Fantasy merch at their booth at Toy Fair, you say? Shock! But really, you can always expect a whole bunch at every event from them, since… well, the series pretty much made them who they are today. Surprisingly, there were only three Play Arts Kai on display: Warrior of Light, Kain Highwind, and the magnificent Bahamut who I have been drooling over since we saw the sculpt. Then we have some minifigs! The Static Arts Minis, which are really friggin cute… at least for the little animals, the characters are almost too cutesy for me. But that Moogle, oh my goodness! AND THE ROUND CHOCOBO. I want to pinch its little fluffy cheeks.

  • Square-Enix has started branching out recently when it comes to their merchandise, and is doing a lot more from comics and movies. But of course they haven’t abandoned their bread and butter: Final Fantasy! Because admit it, that’s what everyone wants, even if it’s a million variations of the same character *cough*Lightning*cough* They just showed off pretty much every FF figure they have in the works, and it’s kind of staggering. Let’s start small: we’ve got some adorable FFVII chibi trading figures! Aww, chibi Cloud. He almost has an emotion! Of course the Play-Arts are where it’s at, and they have a ton. Most importantly (to me) are the Yuna & Tidus Play-Arts from Final Fantasy X: the timing is perfect, since we should be getting the HD remake soon and I’m bouncing off the walls with anticipation. We’ve also got yet another Lightning, this time from Lightning Returns (real creative with the naming). Then there’s the shockingly awesome Bahamut (more summon Play-Arts, please!), Kain Highwind from IV, the Warrior of Light from the series’ inception, and a lovely looking Red XIII in his Advent Children look. • Remember that amazing chocobo sculpture we saw a while back from the talented Jenna Antonelli? Well, she’s at it again with another wonderful piece! This time it’s not just one chocobo, but a momma chocobo with her baby and a kitty friend! This is a commission like the first, with a wonderful story: a man had it done for his expecting wife, who is a huge fan of chocobos! Awww. Every time I see one of her pieces I am so tempted to get a commission of my own. Perhaps of an elusive black or gold chocobo?! [via Jenna Antonelli’s Blog]

  • Lightning, the totally emo heroine from Final Fantasy XIII, has gotten Play-Arts Kai from her first two game appearances so I’m sure it will come as a shock to n one that Lightning Returns will also be getting its fair share of merchandise. Because fans totally want this more than Versus or the FFX port, right? Bitterness over this game getting 3 different versions aside, Lightning does have a pretty cool outfit here (though nothing beats feather skirt). It’s a bit more elaborate than what we usually see on Play-Arts, I wonder how she’ll turn out painted? [via the FF Merch Forums]

  • So let’s face it: Advent Children was a terrible movie, and it came out quite some time ago, but in my mind FFVII merchandise is always a good thing no matter where it comes from. And while I didn’t really used to be a fan of the Play Arts, the sculpts have gotten significantly more detailed over time (in part because they’re freaking HUGE now!). We’ve got Yuffie and Vincent, both of whom aren’t actual plot-centric characters but they’ve proven tenaciously popular. Vincent in particular looks totally awesome, so much detail in that coat! And of course we’ve got their Rufus as well, cause who doesn’t like a well-dressed baddie?

  • After the announcement of a Play-Arts Kai for Yuna, this really isn’t shocking, but Tidus will be joining her! You kind of can’t have one without the other, right? Tidus actually got a Play-Arts way back in 2002 when they were still manufactured by Kotobukiya, but given that FFX is (hopefully) getting a port to the Vita I’d expect a lot more merchandise from Square in the near future. Maybe we’ll get to check them out at Toy Fair! [via 2chan]

  • While Square-Enix makes a lot of Final Fantasy Play-Arts Kai, most of them seem to come from VII and XIII. Unless they happen to be boys, of course! But there are a lot of popular girls as well, and it seems like they’re finally getting their moment in the sun! Or at least Yuna, the perpetually happy summoner from FFX, is. I’m surprised it’s taken them this long to get to her, to be honest. I wonder if we’ll see the other girls, maybe Rikku? Or a Yuna in her FFX-2 garb? Though what I really want is Fran from FFXII. • Since Square-Enix has a lockdown on the Final Fantasy licenses when it comes to PVC, us fans have to live vicariously through garage kits. And given FF’s popularity you’d think it would get a lot, but mysteriously we rarely see them. Well, even if there were thousands I have no doubt that this kit by PKKing (who also did The Swan) would be the cream of the crop! The detail here is just… astounding. Her wings, her face, her dress! Oh, and she’s also 20 inches tall. The design is from FFXII, and in my opinion is one of the best summon designs (as it well should be, given what a pain in the butt it is to get to her!). I know there is literally zero chance that we’ll ever get a PVC version of this, but I’m going to pray to the figure gods anyway. And maybe, you know, sacrifice some stuff, because she’s worth it. [via PKKing]
