Final Fantasy Archive

  • I have such a love-hate relationship with Square-Enix and their figure production. I love Final Fantasy. I hate that we only get action figures from Squeenix themselves (and the occasional bust). While I must admit that the Play Arts Kai are awesome (I dearly love my FFXII Fran), they’re so expensive! Also I prefer scales, so obviously I’m a bit biased here. They had yet another Lightning out at NYCC, cause we absolutely need more of her, along with Terra, Zach, and a Cid who comes with Cait Sith! Dear Squeenix, if you sell him separately (or with the fatto catto body) I will but that shit so fast.

  • Final Fantasy used to be my gaming lifeblood. I have sunk so many hundreds of hours into those games, and they were absolutely my most anticipated releases. Until XIII, which I have tried 3 times to get into. Like literally, I’ve restarted the game 3 times hoping to feel the spark. Nada. So while I pre-ordered XV, I still haven’t touched it. Basically at this point I’m just waiting patiently for the XII remaster, sigh. At least I have my Fran Play-Arts to keep me company! They had quite a few Play-Arts Kai from the FF world at Toy Fair (though sadly none from World of Final Fantasy, how cute would those be?). There’s Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, Nyx Ulric, and Cindy Aurum from XV, and Cloud & Barret from VII. Then there’s what I am all about: plushes! Chocobos to fill the void in your heart, Moogles to make you happy. And a bonus slime from Dragon Quest, to go with the 5 million you probably already own if you’re anything like me.

  • I don’t know about you guys, but I am ultimate hype for World of Final Fantasy. It’s everything I love! And honestly, I desire Dragon Warrior Monsters-style spinoffs for all my faves. Monster catching in Elder Scrolls. Monster catching in Diablo. Monster catching in all the games. But add in that you wear the monsters as hats? AND THE MONSTERS WEAR MONSTER HATS? I can’t even. Thankfully, we’re getting some cute as hell merch from the game. It’s from Square-Enix (of course) and it seems like they’ll be doing vinyl figures from it. It’s hard to judge the size, but they don’t seem that small–and oh my god are they adorable. [via Square-Enix’s Twitter]

  • In theory, having Nomura Tetsuya redesign the DC characters sounds like a good idea. I mean… he makes some nice art, right? Well, it seems someone misheard and thought the idea was “pretend the DC characters are silly tech-based summons like in FFXIII.” I giggled at the original DC Universe Variant Play Arts, I was baffled by the art for the Batman in this line, and the final result is… um… interesting? Very strange? Confusing on a multitude of levels? Check out the gallery for Bats and Cats in all their FF-inspired glory.

  • Final Fantasy is the backbone of Square-Enix’s merchandise (would it kill them to do some Dragon Quest Play Arts goodness), so of course they had lots from the venerable series on display at NYCC. My favorite is, of course, the fat Chocobo plush (which yes I have on order) and the insanely huge Bahamut Play Arts Of course they had the recent Final Fantasy X figures out as well, along with the usual Tonberry and Moogle goodies. Because we all know you actually can never have enough Tonberry in your life.

  • You know, Square-Enix is always pumping out a ton of Final Fantasy merchandise but it always seems to be from VII, X, IV, VI, or that random fighting one. Never from my precious baby because people don’t like it and they have terrible taste while I sob in the corner over no Fran merchandise. But finally dark days are over. I’ve been waiting for this moment, and it is HERE. JUST LOOK. FRAN PLAY-ARTS. I’M GONNA DIE HAPPY. And there was some other stuff too like Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII, and Barret or whatever. I mean, Red XIII is my home(liondog) and it’s cool to see Barret getting some representation but WHATEVER FRAN I’M JUST GONNA DANCE AROUND MY APARTMENT ALL DAY [via Jeff Saylor]

  • When you looked at the header did you think “is that some kind of… weird bondage outfit with like built in suspension capability?” I wouldn’t blame you. Because it looks weird as shit. But no, it’s the goddamn Batman! Designed by Tetsuya Nomura of Final Fantasy fame. Why, you ask? Because Square-Enix has two Play Arts lines that sell well: Final Fantasy and DC. Because they have brains that apparently work in alien ways they thought it’d be TOTALLY GREAT to combine the two into this abomination. It looks like Kirby ate Batman and then Bahamut and exploded. Just… why. [via Siliconera]

  • Square-Enix had a bunch of Final Fantasy merch at their booth at Toy Fair, you say? Shock! But really, you can always expect a whole bunch at every event from them, since… well, the series pretty much made them who they are today. Surprisingly, there were only three Play Arts Kai on display: Warrior of Light, Kain Highwind, and the magnificent Bahamut who I have been drooling over since we saw the sculpt. Then we have some minifigs! The Static Arts Minis, which are really friggin cute… at least for the little animals, the characters are almost too cutesy for me. But that Moogle, oh my goodness! AND THE ROUND CHOCOBO. I want to pinch its little fluffy cheeks.

  • Erick Scarecrow of ESC-Toy always brings a ton of items to conventions, but this year seems to be a record with how many different pieces he’s decided to show up with, and if you’re looking to score some of these for yourself, you’ll have lots of opportunities to! On Friday, Erick will be signing from 3-4 PM at Clutter’s booth (#504) and on Saturday, he’ll be over at the Tenacious Toys booth (#208) from 5-6 PM. First up is a piece that can’t be bought, but can only be won: an edition of 5 custom Daryl Dixon Funko figures from The Walking Dead with custom paint to make him look like the Colossal Titan from Attack on Titan. Why? I have no clue, but it looks pretty cool, so let’s all just go with it. You can win one by buying any ESC-Toy piece at the con from the many booths selling his work or via his website’s releases during the period. First up in releases is the Dali x Crow Bear Blue Hour version, which will be an edition of 20 that will retail for $30 and will be available at Clutter’s booth during Erick’s signing. Also available at Clutter’s booth will be the Little Spiker print, available beginning Preview Night, for $25 and will be an edition of 25 and the I’m Your Puppet print, also for $25, but an edition of 20. Next up, over at the Tenacious Toys booth will be the Bloody Lurker collaboration with Frombies that is limited to 7 pieces for $75 each and available during his signing as well as a Solid Snake print from Metal Gear Solid available on Preview Night for an unknown price, but will be an edition of 20, and a Fr*eza print edition of 10 for $25. Over at Big Kev’s Geek Stuff’s booth (#Z16-Z17), some more prints will be on hand for the comic fans: a One P*ece x Luffybot print, also an edition of 10 for $25, and a Batgirl print, edition of 20 for $25. If you’re not able to make it to the convention though, don’t sweat! A ton of releases will be available online, today, Wednesday the 9th at 12:00 PM EST. The Mr. 2600 Classic version (20 pieces, $30 each), Leatherface Hooper customs (12 pieces $30 each), Camo Maru customs (6 pieces, $30 each), Little Spiker Mossdown (21 pieces, $100 each),  S. Maria Camo (7 pieces, $225 each), Final Fantasy Shinra Storm Cloud custom (1 piece, price TBA), Final Fantasy Judge’s Rage custom (1 piece, $325), Star Wars Camo Vader custom (1 piece, price TBA), Metal Gear Solid Split Camo Snake custom (1 piece, $325), and Wet Suit Maria Supu (3 pieces, $100 each) will all be available at that time. I know I have my eyes on the Dali x Crow Bear for sure!

  • Square-Enix has started branching out recently when it comes to their merchandise, and is doing a lot more from comics and movies. But of course they haven’t abandoned their bread and butter: Final Fantasy! Because admit it, that’s what everyone wants, even if it’s a million variations of the same character *cough*Lightning*cough* They just showed off pretty much every FF figure they have in the works, and it’s kind of staggering. Let’s start small: we’ve got some adorable FFVII chibi trading figures! Aww, chibi Cloud. He almost has an emotion! Of course the Play-Arts are where it’s at, and they have a ton. Most importantly (to me) are the Yuna & Tidus Play-Arts from Final Fantasy X: the timing is perfect, since we should be getting the HD remake soon and I’m bouncing off the walls with anticipation. We’ve also got yet another Lightning, this time from Lightning Returns (real creative with the naming). Then there’s the shockingly awesome Bahamut (more summon Play-Arts, please!), Kain Highwind from IV, the Warrior of Light from the series’ inception, and a lovely looking Red XIII in his Advent Children look.
