Thank you, based Alter gods, for making a figure of Labrys–because we all know I ain’t buying MegaHouse’s ridiculously overpriced version, as nice as she may be. I was so happy when they announced her at WonFest, and though I was a bit disappointed there was no real progress when they brought her to MegaHobby it does mean a fresh new gallery! Including a peek at her masked face, which I like a lot more than the one on display.
Funnily enough, I’ve had Persona 4 Arena sitting in its box for over a year now and have yet to play it. Does this make me a bad Persona fan? …yeah, probably, but I’m kind of Persona 4′d out, at least when it comes to games. But hey, 5 looks dark and promising, and I’m totally buying the 4 dancing game. But when it comes to figures, there are never enough! Except for Aegis. Stop making Aegis. Please.

While I’ve been a less-than-enthusiastic supporter of Dragon’s Crown in the figure world, two have won me over so far. First Vertex’s Tiki, and then MegaHouse when they showed off their painted version of Elf. I really thought my issues with the anatomy would prevent me from even thinking about buying her, but she is SO gorgeous! The hair shading is unreal. She popped up with Amazon at MegaHobby, and now we get to take a closer look at both of them!
The more I look at Elf, the more I love her. I mean there’s a chipmunk IN HER HOOD. I didn’t even notice that before! We also get to take a, ahem, perhaps too close look at Amazon, who is still a lumpy monstrosity in my eyes. I’m just… scared. What is happening. It’s like She-Hulk ON STEROIDS. Last but not least there’s the full art for Sorceress, who is carrying a frog, so I do have some hope left.

If you read Plastikitty even moderately regularly, you probably know that I have a serious Tony Taka addiction. I’ll buy pretty much any figure that he’s done the art for (with the notable exception of Griffon’s recent figures, shudder). My very first Tony Taka figure was Kotobukiya’s Elwing, who was one of the first PVC figures I ever bought. This was quickly followed up by their Kureha, and then… Celestia! I think she’s what really got the addiction going, probably because of dat hair sculpt. She also has the honor of being the figure that got my mom into collecting: she loved Celestia so much, she bought her own! And it’s actually the one I used for this shoot, since mine is still in a box… somewhere.
Celestia still has a special place in my heart, even if Max Factory, Alter, and Kotobukiya’s new takes on TT art greatly surpass her in quality. Looking at her critically (which is hard, due to my nostalgic fondness) I can see some issues: the stiffness of her hair around the ears, the perfect and unrealistic circle created by her skirt. But she still has some beautiful aspects that override everything else, and taking her out for a shoot rekindled my love affair with Celestia. You’ll always be one of my favorite elves!

I really, really want to like this figure. Embrace Japan is often an overlooked company but they’re one of my favorites because they take risks and produce figures no one else would take on, like Sigrid of the Thorn. I also love the character designs of Eiyuu*Senki, done by none other than Oyari Ashito who does really beautiful work. I mean, Gift’s King Arthur was gorgeous, and the sculpt for this one looked pretty good… right?
Well… I actually don’t really like it now that she’s painted. At all. Her pose is just so awkward, and I feel like the face doesn’t do justice to Ashito’s art. The hat is also super weird, makes her look like a Hitler youth who joined the Navy. I mean, the base is pretty cool and she does come with the crown! But no note if it actually goes on her head. However, she does have one redeeming feature: the hilarious censoring once she’s cast-off. I mean, the plush bear… it’s too funny.

I was really uninpressed but Alter’s Summer WonFest 2013 offerings, but it seems like that’s because they were saving all the good stuff for MegaHobby Autumn 2013! We got a veritable deluge of figures: swimsuit versions of Charlotte & Cecilia, Akane Isshiki from Vividred Operation, two Strike Witches, a gorgeous new Sora Kasugano, Asuka from Senran Kagura, and The Muse of Range Murata. Of course they had even more great figures, but we’ll be taking a look at the rest a bit later!
There was a whole lot to feast your eyes upon, but at the time we (obviously) only had event photography. Quick, “oh my god look at this figure!” event photography. But some time has passed, which means it’s time to sit back, relax, and browse some higher quality galleries of these gorgeous ladies. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but my money’s on Sora all the way. I mean…. that dress. She’s perfect!

Well, this happened a lot faster than I was expecting! There was a very, very long gap between the announcement of Street Fighter Bishoujos and the reveal of Chun Li, so I kind of assumed we’d have at least a few months to wait before we saw Cammy–even though we’ve already gotten a peek at her art. However, it seems like that big wait might have been over licensing issues or some such, because they certainly didn’t wait a long time to get Cammy sculpted… or painted! That’s right, this is a 2 for 1 teaser: we won’t be getting the usual sculpt-then-art for her, but an all at once reveal… and probably in the very near future, based on how crisp the sculpt & shading look in this sneak peek.

Of the many Saber variations, Saber Bride might be the strangest (though at the moment, Sakura Saber is fighting for that spot). She’s a form of Extra, so she’s not even the same character as the original Saber, but the main question is: who is she getting married to, and why is she getting married in weird bondage/fetish gear? With a sword? What kind of wedding is this even? But it’s Saber, and Saber sells no matter what. In fact I’m rather fond of this version since it’s so delightfully weird. It was no surprise when we got the Nendoroid announcement, and since she’s been painted for some time now the full reveal was bound to happen sooner or later.
Good Smile really went all out with Saber Bride: the detail is pretty awesome, on everything from her sword to her crown of flowers to the burnt edges of her veil. Pretty impressive for something so tiny! And she actually comes with some decent faces: not happy, happy, and…. incredibly, adorably derpy, with a music note ahoge to match. Too cute! Orders open on December 5th, and I can’t help but wonder what Saber they’re gonna Nendoroid-ize next… they’re running out of options.

Is this real life, is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from giant purple dildo weapons…
So. Wing has a new mysterious figure teaser. That looks very, very, very much like the Saint’s Row logo. And by very very similar I mean that fleur de lis is identical. But then logic kicks in and you’re like naaaw no way that can’t be real what is happening this is shaking the foundation of my figure-built world. But… there it is. Taunting us. Promising a Winter Wonder Festival 2014 reveal.
Remember that Wing has worked with Rockin’ Jelly Bean, who is known for strange comic art, so doing something this off the wall and outrageous wouldn’t be that out of the blue for them. I mean, it’s crazy…. but it just might happen…

Okay guys, you’ve won: I like a Dragon’s Crown figure besides Tiki. Elf, even with her totally derpy spine, is a winner for sure. She’s friggin goooorgeous. The hair, the colors, everything is just amazing. I kind of don’t even believe this is MegaHouse, whose quality has fallen quite a bit lately. She seriously looks like an Alter girl!
Amazon… well, um… yeah. Those are some muscles right there. Yes sirree. I wonder what Sorceress will turn out like?

Oh Seraphim Mode Sakuya, let me count the ways I love you. Your long brown hair, your corset top, your angelic wings, the abundant gratuitous use of clear PVC, your wondrous bow, your frills, feathers on the base even though you don’t have feathers in your wings… wait, does your bow have wing feathers? How does that even work?
I don’t even care because I’ve loved you for so long, Seraphim Sakuya. You look even better than the painted teaser. Your only flaw is that you’re not in my house right now.
