garage kit Archive

  • It’s that time again! Wonder Festival is only 2 days away, so we’re bringing you our annual roundup of some of the best garage kits that will be at the event. Because, as you probably know, Wonder Festival has way more gks than PVC figures but we can’t get our greedy little paws on them. Plus, if we did, we can’t paint. But, as always, if you can paint/will be at the event, all images are labeled with both the circle & character name. The tides seem to be changing this WonFest. There’s very little of our usual standards, like Miku Hatsune or KanColle, and the new darling Re;Zero seems to have already fallen off. Instead we have a TON of Fate girls (both Grand Order and Extella), quite a bit of Persona 5 merchandise, and some truly stunning original characters. And more Adventure Time! Check them all out after the jump. [via i_con, horikazz, crea mode, amie grand, Akiba Weekend, moeyo, vispo, wonder showcase, mfc]

  • As collectors, our focus for Wonder Festival is obviously on the things that you can, you know, actually buy. But at the event, purchasable PVC figures are outnumbered pretty substantially by garage kits. We of course brought you our usual before-event roundup, but it’s time to take a look at all the goodies that were out and about that day! The quality ranges from amazing to god-awful, so we tried to bring you the cream of the crop. Though I will admit, quite a few in this gallery are just here because of how odd they are. Shirtless Gilgamesh? Girl getting (happily) eaten by a shark? Cat on a motorcycle? Check ’em out and tons more below the jump! [via 1up, tom matsumodo, & hanpenx]

  • It’s that time again! Time to look at a few of the garage kits that will be on display and for sale at Wonder Festival. Of course for most of us this is just to drool over, but as always if you are attending the event each picture is labeled with the circle & character name! Also, I am insanely jealous of you. The trends this year are basically what you would expect. Tons of Re:Zero (and by that I mean tons of Rem & Ram, who cares about the other characters!), idol shows out in force, and quite a bit of Granblue Fantasy. Some old trends seem to be dying (there’s very little of Miku & Sonico compared to previous years). And, surprisingly, Cartoon Network is represented quite a bit. Check them all out in the gallery below, and let us know what you’d like to see as PVC! [via Grizzry Panda, mokupate, Volks, Kotopora, Primal Heart, fixia, Anadigi, Tinami]

  • While obviously for Wonder Festival is on PVC figures that you can actually buy, there are always 10x more garage kits than commercially produced merchandise. The dealer room is absolutely massive, and if we attempted to hunt down and show you every single kit at the event it’d probably take several days worth of coverage. And, you know, it’s kind of bittersweet because they’re pretty but you can’t buy them (unless you have a proxy + the skill, time, & money to paint one). This year we had a pretty decent lineup, though I have to say I think it was lacking a bit compared to the last few. There was a LOT of Kantai Collection–mostly Iowa and Kashima, oddly enough. Of course we had Fate/Stay Night, IDOLM@STER, Love Live, and tons more (like a surprise Adventure Time figure!). Check them all out in the gallery. [via Dengeki, toshigk, & Ryuko KASINN]

  • Part of the appeal of Vocaloids is the insane amount of outfits/songs they all have. I mean, the variety is kind of staggering! Though sadly we’ll never get them all in figure form, Good Smile Company has consistently been pumping out scaled varieties of Miku–and now with the Vocaloid Nendoroid Co:De, we’ll have more outfits for everybody! But of course garage kit circles have beaten them to it. We’ve shown you a few custom Miku Hatsune Nendoroids in the past, but today we have tons of alternate outfits for not just her, but Luka, Rin, & Len! Of course we’ll probably never own any of them, but it’s nice to look at, right? [via Tochiotome, D3 Hokanko, & mfc]

  • Wonder Festival has come and gone: we’ve seen all the new PVC figures from it, and have a good sense of what the coming 6 months will look like in terms of pre-orders. But what about the non-PVC stuff? I mean, Wonder Festival is a big event, and it has a dealer’s room! Where you can get garage kits and kaiju and all sorts of great goodies… if you have the money, and of course the skill to paint. We showed you a pre-event roundup, but there’s always lots more to see at the actual thing. A LOT more. And such a wide variety! There are weird tiny cats in kimonos, so very many KanColle and IM@S/Love Live girls, Chima Group’s goodies, a suspiciously low amount of Miku, lots of cuteness, and a very surprisingly SMT Nocturne kit. Check them all out below! [via Toshi GK & Ryoku Kasinn]

  • One of my favorite things about Wonder Festival is the garage kits. I mean, on one hand I can’t actually own any of them and that’s kind of sad. But on the other hand, I can’t own any of them so yay not spending money! This year we have a really great mix to share with you. There’s everything from creative to sexy to cute–a lot of cute! Cute Dark Souls, cute Sonico, cute Kill la Kill, cute Polar Bear Cafe. We also have some US shows creeping in (yes, that is Finn & Jake!), a LOT of Kantai Collection (especially the bad girls–and the good girls in swimsuits?), Miku of course, a surprising amount of Persona merch including an amazingly perfect cat Aegis, and so much more. Check it all out in the gallery: and like always, all kits are named with both the circle & character name to help you find it if you’re going to the show! [via Hyaka Koubou, d.o.a.t, Amon, Atelier Hiro, Ryou, Umiyama, Rampage, Ringo Renmei, Fixia, Abeshi15, T’s System]

  • Cerberus Project might be the circle I look forward to the most every Wonder Festival. They always have tons of releases, and their distinctive style is one of my favorites. Plus they consistently make Monster Hunter kits, and they’re one of the very few producing anything from that franchise. And this year is just as good as always! We have what you’d expect: a new Elin (and probably my favorite so far, those wings!) and a new Monster Hunter girl. There’s another Walkure girl, too: Akane Ryuuzouji. Then we have some surprises! Two Love Live! kits, which are both gorgeous: Nozomi and Niko. Then, last but certainly not least, a stunning kit of Therese from Granblue Fantasy. Of course all kits will be available at WonFest, but good luck getting one (and painting it) if you’re not in Japan! [via Cerberus Project]

  • Volks used to have a pretty decent PVC presence. They had a specific PVC line, and while it was exclusive (and prone to insane delays) they produced some very nice things. Especially the ToHeart 2 line, which had particularly fantastic figures of Tamaki & Sasara. But they’ve all but abandoned those, putting all their efforts into the CharaGumin line: which is like garage kits without any of the benefit of garage kits. They’re pre-painted resin, so they’re easy to assemble, but the paint jobs are pretty basic (nothing like the promo shots) so you need to do work on them anyway. But the sculpts are stuff you could get in PVC anyway, and don’t have any of the intricacies we see in the great gks. But, apparently, they’re popular enough to churn out a bunch because they sure did show some off at Hobby Round 15. From a decent Saber Bride to a terrifying (but seasonal) Super Pochaco, there’s something for everyone who feels like emptying their wallets! [via Dengeki]

  • I have a real love-hate relationship with garage kits. I love the creativity and artistry that sculptors bring to them. I hate how hard they are to get, and the fact that even if I did get one I couldn’t paint it. So every time I find a new one to lust after it’s pretty bittersweet. Sure, there’s a like 1% chance that a PVC manufacturer will pick it up, but most of the time I just have to love them from a distance. That is definitely the case with this kit of¬†llyasviel von Einzbern from Fate/Stay Night by the circle Crea Mode. Illya is one of my favorite Type-Moon characters but we really don’t see a lot of her (and no, I’m not counting her magical girl spinoff show). While I’ll admit that the face on this sculpt is a little spooky, everything else is just so perfect. I love how delicate she looks, the detail of her hair sculpt, the clear ombre, that crazy base, her Swan Lake inspired outfit… it’s just amazing! [via Crea Mode]
