Green Lantern Archive

  • I’ve never really understood the ‘Marvel vs DC’ mentality (don’t most comic fans read them both?) but if I was absolutely forced to pick I would be on Team DC. Because I’m basic as heck and I love Batman. So sue me! And, of course, I love me a good DC figure. Like the new Katana art they had out! Kotobukiya had quite a few DC figures on display at Toy Fair, like the huge 1/6 scale Justice League (well, at least Batman/Superman/Flash/Wonder Woman/Green Lantern). And Bishoujos Harley Quinn, Wonder Girl, the Killing Joke statue (which is getting a re-release), the Villains line in all their evil glory, and some of the classic cartoony ArtFX+.

  • Given the huge number of DC movies on the horizon, I’m sure by next NYCC Kotobukiya’s booth will be flooded with them (though let’s be honest, I’m only hoping for Aquaman & Mera). But this year there was only one: the hugely impressive Batman vs Superman duo. I sure do hate that stumpy batsuit but it looks great on this scale! We also had Bishoujos. Lots of Bishoujos. Both Harleys, Black Canary, Wonder Girl. We had the villains ArtFX+ (including their new star Harley Quinn), the Super Powers line, and their larger scale ArtFX statues. Check them all out below!

  • We got some very exciting DC-related announcements at Kotobukiya’s panel (Bishoujo Katana and the TV show teasers). But given how massive their DC lines are, it’s no surprise that there was a ton more! Like the affordable retro Super Powers figures, their villains ArtFX+ line (including the brand-new Harley Quinn–and a new sculpt for Black Manta), and their ArtFX statues. We also got a little more info about the Ikemen line. It was a pretty big deal when announced, and they discussed how happy fan response has been along with the potential of the line. If the Bat-Boys sell well enough, they will definitely be continuing with other characters!

  • Sometimes I think that basically all of DC’s characters are iconic, then I remember characters like Rainbow Girl and think, “yeah, maybe not so much.” So of course their Icons line has everyone you would expect: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Swamp Thing, and even some villains like the Joker (of course!). Some of them seem a little less, um, iconic (Firestorm, really?), but the lineup looks great so far–if you like male heroes. Not many girls here, it seems.

  • We’ve already seen a bit of Kotobukiya’s New52 Villain ArtFX+ line at New York Comic Con, but it turns out they had a whole lot of updates on it at the panel. Like, way more than I was expecting. We got the Joker sculpt (definitely not a surprise–he’s like the #1 DC villain, so of course we’re getting him!), and this is their first figure of him with the jacked up face. There are two versions: an exclusive half-shaven head one, and a regular release. Then we have two announcements: Bizarro and Sinestro! I was really hoping that the Bizarro art wasn’t just a tease, and indeed we are getting him! I hope Sinestro joining the line means we might get some Red Lanterns. Rage Kitty, plz.

  • Since we are, after all, at a comic convention, Kotobukiya brought the comic figures out in force. There was only one announcement, the art for the Harley Quinn Bishoujo, but a lot more was going on! Many of the past Bishoujos were on display (like my boo Starfire), along with the retro Super Powers line and some of the DC ArtFX statues. And some of the newer figures were on display too, like the ArtFX+ Arkham Knight line of, duh, the Arkham Knight and Batman himself! Because it’s just not a DC display without at least 2 figures of Bats.

  • We’ve already seen a lot of what DC had on offer at Toyfair: Bombshells and Covergirls, TV and cartoon toys, and of course some new action figures. But there was more! Because their booth was a labyrinth of figures that you could never escape from. Just kidding, there were lots of exists, but it sure took a hell of a long time to finish shooting everything in it. There was really a little bit of everything here. Want a Deadman action figure? A super adorable black & white Batgirl statue? A badass motorcyle-riding Harley? The world’s weirdest Wonder Woman? A Green Arrow & Black Canary figure so sickly-sweet it makes me want to vomit? It’s all there, so check it out (and more!) in the gallery!

  • It’s funny that nostalgia is a marketable emotion, isn’t it? We all want a peek back into the wonders of childhood, where things had the potential to be unlimitedly awesome. Many toy companies have tried to stir up these feelings for our old wrinkly selves, but few have been truly successful. Personally, I’d put Kotobukiya’s Super Powers line in the “definitely works” category. When I first saw the sculpts at Toy Fair I was filled with a rush of longing for all those hours spent in my friend’s attic, playing with action figures. I mean, look at Superman’s extra arm! It’s just the right amount of kitsch. The best part is the price: because these are much simpler than Kotobukiya’s ArtFX+ figures, they should retail in the area of $30 each!

  • One of Kotobukiya’s big announcements at NYCC was a brand-new ArtFX+ Super Powers line, which traces its roots to the old Kenner action figures. I wasn’t exactly sure how it would turn out, but they’re definitely the smash hit of Toy Fair now that they’re actually sculpted and (partially) painted. Something about them is just so super nostalgic without veering into cheesy or pandering territory. So far we have the Flash, Green Lantern, and Superman fully sculpted–and look at Superman’s extra action arm! Robin and Batman are sculpted, and we already know the next three in the line: Hawkman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman. Though be assured that if these are successful, we’ll definitely be getting a Wave 2–maybe with villains even!

  • DC had a LOT on display at Toy Fair, though their booth was actually fairly small and tucked into the back of Diamond. They made very good use of their space, and aside from the figures we already showed you… well, there’s a lot more. So let’s dive in! There’s the BatMan Cave line which features a chess set, dartboard, pool sticks, poker set, and a utility belt, so you can have the coolest Man/Woman Cave on the block (because girls like Batman too, DC.). Seriously, if you get these can I come hang out at your house? We’ve got some stuff for kids: plush and wooden block play set. So cute! Now you can push your child into comic addiction from birth. Of course there were tons of action figures: New 52 Action Figures Series 2, Greg Capullo Action Figures series 1 and 2, and Justice League War Action Figures. Action figures from Arrow made an appearance, along with Vertigo’s Death porcelain doll who I find a little… unsettling. Last but not least is the adorable Scribblenauts Unmasked blind boxed line, which I absolutely NEED in my life.
