Highschool DxD Archive

Did you think that Griffon Enterprises had gone the way of the dinosaurs (and Taki Corp)? So did everyone else. It’s been ages since they actually did anything, and many of their in-production figures (like the damn goldfish action figure I had on order for 2 years!!) were simply cancelled or left in limbo. But apparently they were just hibernating, because they’re back with totally new branding!
They showed off two new lines, which really just seems like a way of re-branding their image. The first, Bishojo Tairiku, is their art-based 18+ line (kind of like what Native and AlphaMax does), featuring art by Kizuki Aruchu, Koutaro, Watanabe Yoshihiro, and more! The second, Grand Toys, features more traditional licenses like Cutie Honey, Super Sonico, Highschool DxD, and Silent Möbius. They’ve also revived a few Date A Live and Rozen Maiden figures I thought were long gone! I know Griffon has been a spotty company but they’ve made quite a few very nice figures, so I hope this works out well for them.

You know we’re pretty much done with Wonder Festival when we get down to companies like Pulchra! Not that they’re terrible, but they are quite small and their quality is only so-so… so far, at least. Their sculpts at Wonder Festival looked better than their previous offerings, so maybe they’re on the way up!
They had quite a bit out on display: Koneko Toujou from Highschool DxD, Enju Aihara from Black Bullet, Kirishima Lei, Esdeath from Akame ga Kill!, and Mio Naruse & Yuki Nonaka from Shinmai Maou no Keiyakusha. They’ve also announced a Yuuki Mikan from To LOVEru!

Kaitendoh is a pretty middle-of-the-road type of company, but every once in a while they pull out some surprises. Like their Hestia: she’s so cute! In fact, I like her more than most of the other ones on the market. Who would have thought?
But aside from Hestia and the Highschool DxD figure, their focus wasn’t really on new sculpts. It was mostly recolors and announcements! A lot of announcements. They’ll be doing another figure of both Sonico and Pochaco, Escalayer Kuro (wow, what a throwback!), Misaki Tobisawa, and Iori Yuukidou from Asakara Zusshiri Milk Pot.

Rias Gremony is one of those characters that I should love (a red-haired demon girl!), but so far not a single one of her figures has appealed to me. And man, have there been a lot. But almost all of them have been from middling to mediocre companies, and no sculpts wowed me. So when I saw that Embrace Japan was taking her on my hopes were high, because I love them as a company.
And thankfully, the sculpt is pretty cute! I am, as always, not a fan of the magically floating boobs but I love the pose and base. Her face is not exactly true to character, but it’s so adorable! Hopefully the paint comes out nicely.

Kaitendoh and Lechery are sister companies: think of them like Max Factory and Native. One makes not-smut, the other makes smut. Only, you know, Kaitendoh’s quality can’t even dream as being as good as MF or Native. But they still make figures, so we’re gonna write about them! Kaitendoh only had a few things on hand: their “football” Pochaco, a cool-looking sculpt of Sinon, and Xenovia from Highschool DxD.
Then there’s Lechery. The gulag captain-looking fox lady is Ookami-san from their Fairy Tale line. What bedtime stories did they hear as kids?! Then there’s the announcement for ANOTHER Shamsiel Shahal, an absolutely bizarre tentacle girl, and… some topless girls on bikes/scooters? Is this a companion piece to tricycle girl?

I feel like whenever Griffon goes to an event they just bring every single thing they are working on. Which leaves us with a whole pile of figures to sort through. So what will you find in this particular massive gallery? Lots of Date A Live and Sword Art Online, many girls with their butts up in the air, some progress on their NSFW-ish Infinite Stratos line, some small work on the Persona poseable chibis, one very big Kirino, and a lot of boobs. Like, prepare yourself for the boobage.
One thing that baffles me about Griffon is their consistent lack of consistency. Take a look at Shimakaze’s sculpt: looks like a prize figure from 2007, just awful. But the large Kirino, the Highschool DxD line, or the new Atelier girl Escha Malier? Much, much better! Even in the same line they can’t make up their minds about whether they suck or not. That naked apron Laura? An abomination. The sculpt for shower Cecilia? Gorgeous! Griffon, why. WHY.

If there is a current show or franchise you enjoy that’s popular, you can almost always bet that Griffon has something in the works for it. Whether it will actually be good… well, that’s another story. Some of their figures at CharaHobby (that Kirino!) look amazing, others… not so much.
We’ve got Sword Art Online, OreImo, Queen’s Blade, Persona, Date A Live, Rozen Maiden, Shining Blade, Sonico, Infinite Stratos, Dead or Alive, Highschool DxD, Kikou Shoujo wa Kizutsukanai, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, Girls und Panzer, Kikou Shoujo wa Kizutsukanai and more in the gallery below!

So you thought you’d seen it all with the scaled figures, Nendo and figmas at Miyazawa Model Exhibition? Oh no, there was more of course. You know, the stuff people don’t care enough to tweet about during the event and we only see in event coverage later. Which is why I’d like to actually be able to go to Japan and do this shit myself. Sigh.
ANYWAY, Good Smile had their Mikasa out on display, Max Factory’s Kongo was there as well (with a changed release date: September), 2 KanColle Nendo protos made an appearance (Kaga and Kitakami), Gift’s Houki Shinonono, FREEing’s various giant bunny girls (that Cecilia, squee!), and a brand-new Celia from Penguin Parade. Check ’em all out in the gallery!

If you were thinking “man, I bet CM’s Wonder Festival booth will be a total yawn-fest” well… you wouldn’t be wrong! They only had two licensed figures on display: a totally dull Momo Belia Deviluke and a ridiculously scandalous Rias Gremony.
Then there were two announcements, one for a figure of Soniko (that seems to be… wearing dessert?), and the second for Chocolate from Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Come o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru. This is actually a really adorable character that no one else has picked up, so I hope she looks nice when sculpted!

FREEing had a totally massive display at WonFest this year: I order so few of their figures that I forget how many they produce! However, it seems like they (might have) really stepped up their quality: starting with fairy Racing Miku, who it seems like they will be producing. We also have sculpts for the Yukata Madoka crew, along with Senbonzakura Rin & Len.
There’s a lot of new as well! They’re going back to Freezing with a new figure of Bridgete and Elizabeth Malby, who is perched atop her. And there are more big bunny girls: Akeno Himejima, and of course the IS ones we already saw. There are other animals too, as Sarashiki Tatenashi gets a cat version. As for new, we’ve got Alice Kunoji (a big surprise!), Momo Belia Deviluke in a yukata (shock!), and Lisara Restall from Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai.
[UPDATE] Added the Nanoha, Fate & Hayate yukata figures.
