Sometimes, a design can go too far. Sometimes you need to step back and say “hey, do we really need neon green giant roses around her knees?” The answer to that question is always no, Huke. Sigh. I have been on board the Black Rock Shooter train since the first figure, and in fact own every piece of figure merchandise from the show except for one petit set. You know, the really boring one where they’re just humans. But honestly, I prefer “just humans” to this frilly monstrosity.
There are a lot of good ideas here, but they don’t mesh together. Neon green everywhere, a wedding veil, frills out the wazoo. It’s just too much going on! The scythe, however, I can get behind. But for some reason the overdone design seems a lot more apparent on the figma than the Nendoroid. More room for detail, I suppose. Of course she doesn’t even come with much: 3 faces that all look the same (bored, slightly angry and bored, eyes closed), her scythe, and some chains. She’ll retail for ¥3,800 with a May release, and expect orders to open tonight.

Of course characters drawn by the same artist will look alike, but the BRS girls go a little beyond that. Same exact body type, same face, same expression, annoyingly similar clothing when it comes to some of them. So I am a big fan of Chariot, one of his girls who looks nothing like any of the others! She’s quite popular but so far the only figure of her we have is her Nendoroid, <a href="http://www.plastikitty.com/home/winter-wonder-festival-2013-nendoroid-mania" target="_blank">shown off at WonFest</a>.</p> <p>Now we are getting a preview of Chariot, and she looks lovely! So much detail for a Nendoroid sculpt. She also comes with expressions you can actually tell apart, a first in the BRS world. And accessories as well–her shield, macaroons, and the intimidating tank named… Mary. What? Well, Mary is pretty cool, and she even has two expressions of her own! The most terrifying part? Even with the massive amount of delays that came late in the year it was just totally jam-packed with releases. In fact, this might actually be our biggest month of orders… ever. Well, maybe excluding July of 2010, where we had an entire wall of loot from SDCC. But in terms of imports, yeah, it’s a bit overwhelming! Because we really love her. And thankfully Good Smile isn’t killing the interest of fans with the <a href="http://www.plastikitty.com/home/gscs-saber-zero-gives-me-advertizing-fatigue" target="_blank">Saber Zero treatment</a>–in fact, this is the first gallery I’ve seen of IBRS in a while! But really, a figure like this deserves some juicy detail shots and oh boy do we have a ton of them. Akiba has even dedicated like 10 to her totally non-existent butt.</p> <p>The more I look at this figure, the more impressed I am by the sculpting. So much detail! And I love that she’s so big that their usual setup didn’t fit her so they had to pull a Lechery. Mm, check out those background lines. And is it just me, or does her leg armor give off a <em>Dark Souls</em> vibe? Or maybe I’ve just spent too much time in that world. Well apparently she was in <a href="http://www.plastikitty.com/home/magazine-scans-december-2012" target="_blank">magazine scans</a> that someone just forgot to upload, and now we have it plus all of her info. She’ll be ¥13,800, which is really not that bad given how absolutely massive she is. Her official height is 11″ tall crouching down, I can’t even begin to imagine how much space she’ll take up with those twintails & cannon. I am having some hardcore figure feels.</p> <p>*ahem* So, ever since Good Smile Company’s Insane Black Rock Shooter <a href="http://www.plastikitty.com/home/summer-wonder-festival-2012-gscs-insane-black-rock-shooter" target="_blank">was unveiled at Wonder Festival</a>, people have been in an uproar over it because she’s beautiful and perfect and oh my god why is she not in my life right now. Well, that’s how I thought before the paint. Now? I would do horrible things to own her. Oh sweet baby Jesus is she gorgeous.</p> <p>The paint is superb, the sculpting (done by Kiking) is beyond fantastic, and of course she has her Insane Lance Cannon and Sword along with an epically large base. How much space is she going to take up? How much will she cost?! I don’t even care just gimmie. Though on the good news side, it seems like she will be a regular release and not a GSC exclusive as some feared! We’ve got figures, games, an OVA and lastly an anime. At WonFest they <a href="http://www.plastikitty.com/home/summer-wonder-festival-2012-brs-the-animation-figmas-nendoroids" target="_blank">announced that they’d be doing Nendoroids and figmas</a> based on the anime designs, and we got a peek at this Dead Master Nendoroid at <a href="http://www.plastikitty.com/home/dengeki-20th-anniversary-tv-animation-nendoroid-dead-master" target="_blank">Dengeki’s 20th Anniversary</a>. She was looking a little radioactive there, so is the final prototype looking any better?</p> <p>I’m going to be honest: I really dislike most of the new designs. They’re just so overdone! Look at Dead Master here: green all over (though not on her claws, a big mistake on GSC’s part), frills out the wazoo, glasses AND a wedding veil. It’s just too over the top for me. Thankfully you can take the stupid veil off and she looks much cuter that way to me.
