  • Ah, MegaHobby Expo, Wonder Festival’s little brother. Years ago the two rivaled each other in scale, but as time has passed MegaHobby has gotten smaller and smaller. Fewer companies, fewer figures. But there are always a few gems to be found! We’ll start the coverage with Alter, one of my favorite companies (though as you may know, they have recently fallen out of the “affordable” bracket and into the “look longingly from a distance” bracket for me). They had quite a few cuties out on display, including many updates to their Wonder Festival sculpts. Jeanne d’Arc definitely stole the show for me! The only brand-new reveal was Arie Nadja from Madou Monogatari who is so adorably retro it hurts. [via moeyo]

  • Prize figures have always been appealing: you get a cheap version of a popular character, often in an outfit that we’d never see in scales. Plus, the quality gets better and better on them every year. With rising scaled figure prices and a worsening exchange rate, prize figures are looking better than ever, so it’s a good thing the upcoming lineup of them seems amazing! We have all the regulars out and about: Evangelion, Kantai Collection, Sword Art Online, Fate/Grand Order, Bakemonogatari, Miku, Lupin, and many many more. The noodle topper ones really seem to be taking the prize world by storm: I have a few and can vouch for how amazingly fun they are to display all sorts of odd ways. Any of them catch your eye? • Ah, Alter. Every year they get me so good! And it’s always with girls (or boys, from the Altair line) from franchises that I otherwise wouldn’t care about. Am I super obsessed with their Love Live and IM@S girls? Yes. Would I willingly watch either of those shows? No. I just love frilly dresses so very much. This year they have a great lineup. Shiki Ichinose from Cinderella Girls is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in my life, but the Love Live girls are also looking strong with a gorgeous Riko Sakurauchi. We have many, many FREE! boys and some other Altair announcements: Fate/Grand Order dudes! Merlin, Arthur Pendragon, and Edmon Dantes will all be getting scales. If you like the ladies, Alter will be doing Shielder too. They seem to be getting back to Strike Witches, which is nice, and we also have a surprise Chachamaru and Asuna. Check them all out below! • Ahh, Alter. I have almost entirely sworn off buying figures, but when I am tempted it’s Alter at least 50% of the time. Something about them just really gets me in my figure-loving soul. And this event is no exception! While they only had a few goodies on hand, they were all absolutely gorgeous: from their stunning new Gwendolyn to the unbearably adorable Anzu Futaba, Alter still has it going on. Of course there were no big surprises. We have their usual go-to franchises: Fate (this time it’s a casual Lancer), IDOLM@STER, Love Live! (I never stop wanting these girls, sigh), Free!, and Tales of. Plachta from Atelier Sophie was definitely a nice surprise, as I didn’t expect her to turn out so beautifully based on the sculpt. [UPDATE] Added some lovely bonus pictures from Hobby Maniax [via Dengeki & AmiAmi]

  • Another day, another event in Japan! This time around it’s Anime Japan 2017, a smaller event that only a handful of companies attend. But they still had quite a few new goodies to show us. Re:Zero seemed to be the real star here: Rem & Ram have figures from Good Smile Company, and Rem is getting a Cu-Poche. Kemono Friends also proved to be quite popular, with the Nendoroid reveal of Serval and a figma announcement for her too. There were, of course, many Nendoroids out on display. Li Syaoran is sculpted and so cute! We had a few new announements from Kotobukiya too, like a scaled figure of Aiz Wallenstein from Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Gaiden: Sword Oratoria. Why with these names, Japan. Aiz had a fully painted surprise figure from Genco out & about too. Check them out and much more in the gallery! [via Kahotan & Dengeki]

  • We’ve already shown you Pokemon figmas, Tracer and Genji from Overwatch, some new Fate/Grand Order figmas, Persona 5 figmas, and Utena, but it’s not a Wonder Festival if Max Factory and co don’t shove every possible franchise ever down our throats in poseable 1/12th scale form! When it comes to video games, we’ve got a lot between Crow from Gravity Daze 2, Ulala from Space Channel 5, Gwendolyn from Odin Sphere, Bloodborne and Dark Souls III, Ludens (who knows if this is even a game, but whatever), Kusanagi Kyo and Yagami Iori from King of Fighters, and the painted Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Samus. Then we’ve got like the entire cast of Love Live! Sunshine!! with Matsuura Kanan, Kurosawa Dia, Watanabe You, Tsushima Yoshiko, Kunikida Hanamaru, Ohara Mari, and Kurosawa Ruby so that you can recreate the show yourself a la Robot Chicken. Then continuing on with the anime we’ve got Rem and Ram from Re:Zero aka the same sculpt twice with super minor differences, but everyone’ll only buy Rem since she actually had a storyline unlike Ram, Tanya Degurechaff from Saga of Tanya the Evil (because Japan still has a hard on for little girls dressed up as the enemy from WWI or WWII), Klaus and Leonardo from the new season of Kekkai Sensen, Yukari Akiyama from Girls Un Panzer, and Misako Akeno from High School Fleet. Then from KanColle we’ve got three new entries with Yuudachi, Tokitsukaze, and Fubuki. FREEing also had a few figmas on hand with their massive Iron Fossil from Dariusburst as well as the Bubblegum Crisis Moto Slave and a figma ex:ride of Ray from Kikou Souseki Mospeada. Then over in experimental land we’ve got the amazing sculptor Takayuki Takeya taking on Devilman. Oh, but that’s not all. No. We also got *the best figma of all time*. What is it might you ask? What could be better than stuff like The Thinker? Oh, I’ll tell you. It’s the E233 Series Train. Yes, that’s right, it’s a literal figma of a train. Now everybody better hop on the figma train hypetrain before it leaves the station because woo boy I hope they make more trains to keep on with the ridiculous factor of having a figma train. • Nendoroids. I love ’em, but on days like this I think to myself “why are there so many?!” We’ve seen the Nendos from Persona 5 and Fate/Grand Order. But there’s more. SO MANY MORE. We’ve got a surprise Lum, Fullmetal Alchemist cuties, Atlas & P-Body, Tony Taka Racing Miku, a new Kirby x2, Leonard Watch, Li from Cardcaptor, maiko Madoka Nendoroids, a Detective Conan quartet, new Rin & Len, even more Love Live!, Vocaloids Rin & Len, Attack on Titan, Re:Zero, a new Reimu (who looks sooo much better than the old one), Little Witch Academia, Fire Emblem, Kimi no Na wa, Ero Manga-sensei, Granblue Fantasy, Kyoukai no Rinne, Serval from Kemono Friends (so cute!! but why is the African mammal white guys), Saga of Tanya the Evil, Little Armory, Tsuki ni Yorisou Otome no Sahou, BanG Dream!, Is the order a Rabbit?, AND MORE. So much more. Like many cool Nendoroid accessories: tanks for them to ride in, penguin & bear suits, special Halloween and Christmas sets… check ’em out below, and decide what tiny plastic babies to spend your hard-earned money on. • Max Factory is one of my favorite companies, but they’re certainly not a super productive one. They only had a few scaled figures on hand at WonFest, but they were lovely! Like that bike racing Miku: so cute! There’s also a Luka figure if you’re all Miku’d out. Wedding Lingerie Lala is finally here, and Murakumo from KanColle is painted. We also have 3 Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata announcements (so many from them and GSC!): Utaha, Eriri, and Megumi. Oh, and there’s a surprise Devilman outta nowhere. A large portion of their display is dedicated to the small figures, like their Love Live figFIX and the model kit Plamax (Dirty Pair!). Plus we had all those Fate/Grand Order figures from earlier. [UPDATE] We have a picture of their Iowa! [via whl4u]

  • Once again, Alter’s event booth is totally dominated by idol girls (and some idol boys!). Oddly enough, I kind of hate watching all those shows but I passionately love the figures. Who knows with these things. And oh boy is this a good year for idol-loving peeps. Their stunning Ranko is painted, along with Sachiko. We’ve got the world’s freaking cutest Anzu Futaba and a sassy as hell Shiki Ichinose. As for Love Live!, there are new figures of Rin Hoshizora and Hanayo Koizumi. For the boys, we have Ai Mikaze and Ranmaru Kurosaki from Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ painted and Camus is sculpted. The much-anticipated Okoi from Oboro Muramasa is here, and we have an announcement for Torahime! There was a surprise sculpt for SAO‘s Sinon, the casual Lancer sculpt, Ikumi Mito it painted, and we’ve got a very suggestive maid Lala. Oh, and Santa Alter Saber is on display too! It’s so weird and over the top but I love Christmas figures. [via AmiAmi’s Twitter]

  • It’s that time again! Time to look at a few of the garage kits that will be on display and for sale at Wonder Festival. Of course for most of us this is just to drool over, but as always if you are attending the event each picture is labeled with the circle & character name! Also, I am insanely jealous of you. The trends this year are basically what you would expect. Tons of Re:Zero (and by that I mean tons of Rem & Ram, who cares about the other characters!), idol shows out in force, and quite a bit of Granblue Fantasy. Some old trends seem to be dying (there’s very little of Miku & Sonico compared to previous years). And, surprisingly, Cartoon Network is represented quite a bit. Check them all out in the gallery below, and let us know what you’d like to see as PVC! [via Grizzry Panda, mokupate, Volks, Kotopora, Primal Heart, fixia, Anadigi, Tinami]
