Plastikitty Review: Kotobukiya’s Bishoujo Tali’Zorah

Tali is my favorite Mass Effect girl (though truly Wrex is #1 in my heart), so of course I’ve been dying for her Bishoujo. The announcement, which followed Bishoujos Liara and Commander Shepard (review), had me totally over the moon. Because who doesn’t want a purple, gas mask-wearing alien in their collection?

Her art and sculpt were released almost back to back and were followed shortly by pre-orders. How many, exactly? Well counting recolors and announced figures, a whopping 55! Considering that they only started up in 2009, they’re coming out at an almost unprecedented speed. Probably because there’s just so much ground to cover: we’ve got the original comic girls as well as characters from video games and movie franchises. The possibilities are almost endless!

Of course every fan of the line has a long list of characters they’d like to see done up by Shunya, Stephen and I decided to compile a list of our biggest wants, with guest appearances from our Bishoujo-addicted staff members Chris and Mir! Usually a Bishoujo is shown off, we get the prototype shots, and eventually she is released. But Shepard seemed a constant buzz of activity! We got to take an up close look at her two times, she got a recolor right off the bat, and of course there are the much-discussed changes to her face.

Even their Liara didn’t stir up as much controversy and intensity, but given her high-profile origin and the fact that, you know, she’s the main character I suppose that’s to be expected! Plastikitty Review: Kotobukiya’s 1/7 Mass Effect Bishoujo Commander Shepard

Kotobukiya’s Commander Shepard Bishoujo has certainly been a much talked about figure since she was first announced.

But could the final release live up to the hype? Hit the jump to find out!

I have never seen fans have this much influence over a figure–her original art was changed to make her less “sexualized” (aka no heels, which I understand but don’t agree with). I did like the prototype, especially when we got to take a close look at her–such a stunning face!

Then she got a second round of changes, and her makeup was severely toned down due to fans thinking it didn’t fit her… even though part of her character creation involves eyeshadow. Now she’s getting a THIRD update, and her face is changed a little bit again! On one hand I think she looks really close to the game now, and very lovely. But on the other she’s getting farther away from Shunya’s art–which is what Mass Effect fans want, but not what I’ve come to expect from this line. Well, I guess you can’t please everyone!

[via Kotobukiya’s Facebook]

It seems that the limited edition is getting a bit of tweaking to accommodate fans, and we’re getting a peek at the new design! There aren’t many changes from the San Diego Comic Con lineup: Commander Shepard, Female Commander Shepard, Ashley, Garrus, and Tali were all on display. I think Tali and Garrus are really the best looking out of the bunch, especially Garrus who they really managed to capture. It’s been a while since this group was painted, so I wonder if we’ll be getting some more announcements soon? Perhaps a certain Wrex…? I know I’d love to have a figure of him!

Kotobukiya had the prototype on hand at New York Comic Con, and we got the chance to take a detailed, in-depth look at this fierce beauty behind the glass. This is definitely one of my favorite Bishoujos so far, with the perfect balance of strength and sexy. Her face in particular is so close to Shunya’s signature style, and as you can see in the gallery the detail on her suit is amazing! I’m definitely looking forward to her along with the alternate colorway.
