MegaHobby Expo 2015 Archive

  • MegaHouse is the company that runs MegaHobby Expo, but somehow they’re always the company I’m least excited to cover. I mean, they had some great stuff (like the Pokemon and Digimon figures we already saw) but overall they’re just kind of… lackluster? There are some kind of cool announcements, like the fact that we’re getting bikini figures of the Bikini Warriors girls–they showed off Mage and Paladin! But overall? Yeah, not too pumped. I think that’s because there is a big focus on shows like One Piece and Gintama, which are just not my jam. But if you are a fan, this was a great event! We have announcements for quite a few new P.O.Ps, including (another) bikini Nami, a lounging Sanji, and Trafalgar Law… as a girl? There’s also a new Bulma–after years of Bulma figure drought, we’re now (happily) drowning in her! Also the reveal of a Sailor Saturn Petit Chara Deluxe. Funny that they’re doing her before any of the other senshi! Last but not least, we’re getting figures of Relena Peacecraft and Heero Yuy from Alpha x Omega! Aw yeah Gundam Wing. MegaHouse will also be making Asuka Sugou from Shin Seiki GPX Cyber Formula. [via figsoku]

  • Amakuni: aka “manufacturer of figures I want that are always so expensive & exclusive so they make me cry.” It’s always kind of bittersweet to see what they have coming down the pipeline because it will inevitably be pretty and I inevitably won’t be able to get it. SIGH. They had, of course, some great stuff at Megahobby, including Wedding Muramasa! Plus the bonus announcement for a Wedding Chachamaru Ashikaga. The alternate Beelzebub is also painted. We have a ton of new sculpts! There’s Felicia von Flamberg (lol that name) from Sword & Wizards, the gorgeous Umuru from Wixoss, an announcement for Libeccio from KanColle, and the hilariously busty Kasumi Iwato from Saki Zenkoku-hen. • We’ve seen Alter’s Yuzuruha, but of course they had lots more at Megahobby Expo! I mean, they did just show off some stuff at that IDOLM@STER event but still, many goodies to be had. There were, of course, many of their Love Live! girls (seeing as how they are doing the whole cast): the Halloween Eri was there (which is technically Alpha x Omega), along with Maki Nishikino and Nozomi Tojou. We also have two Sabers: the previously announced Saber Alter is sculpted, and they’ve announced a new school uniform one. Personally, I don’t need any more Sabers, but man the dress on that Alter… The most exciting announcement (to me) is a dual figure of Charlotte and Laura from Infinite Stratos… as catgirls! It’s just too cute. We also have sculpts for Edna from Tales of Zestiria (who I seriously thought was another Saber), along with Julius Will Kresnik from Tales of Xillia 2. Gertrud Barkhorn, the last announced Strike Witch, is sculpted, and the rather risque Mea Kurosaki got a paint job along with Isuzu Sento. Check them all out below! [UPDATE] Added Yukina Himeragi from Strike the Blood [via whitenoize, prizeman_ufo & Hobby Search]

  • Alter’s line for Muramasa: The Demon Blade has been, shall we say, incredibly slow-paced. Momohime, who is arguably their most popular figure of all time, came out ages ago (though she’s gotten a ton of re-releases) and Kongiku was quite a ways back too at this point. But it’s still chugging along, as we found out this summer with the reveal of the Yuzuruha sculpt. I wasn’t a huge fan of Kongiku, but man oh man am I in love with this figure. I mean, the whole kimono-clinging-directly-to-her-buttcheeks is a little weird but hey, she’s a magical fox girl. Maybe that’s part of her powers. The detail level on the sculpt & paint is exactly what you’d expect from Alter and this is definitely coming home to me no matter how much they jack up her price. • MegaHouse is really going all-out on the nostalgia figures recently, huh? Usually they’re not a company I am super interested in but their tactics must be working, because suddenly I have a ton of their stuff in the mail. Because if you make figures from my childhood anime, I’m pretty much guaranteed to buy it. And one of my absolute favorites was Digimon, so of course I’ve been loving those! I mean, ignoring making Angewomon, Angemon & Wizardmon exclusives. We just don’t talk about those. It seems like after making all the kids with their regular (un-digivolved? what even is the correct term here) mons it’s time for BIG DIGIMON. First up is not Greymon (shockingly) but Matt and Garurumon! Everyone’s favorite seal-tiger-wolf. And I’m sure we will be getting the rest of the cast too! [UPDATED] with some new images! • MegaHobby Expo used to be one of the really big figure events. With all the smaller ones, it’s toned down a bit in popularity these past few years, but we still get a good bit of new info. And tonight we have some great stuff: MegaHouse’s Pokemon line will not be ending with Jessie and James, but will continue on! They showed off the sculpts for Ash & Misty, and of course both of them have Pokemon pals. I pretty much grew up on Pokemon so this is such an exciting line for me! I wonder who else they will add? Brock, maybe Nurse Joy? I really want a Sabrina. [via highrunder’s Twitter]

  • A few weeks ago we showed you Kotobukiya’s painted sculpt for their Hestia, this season’s new overnight It Girl, and now, today, we’re seeing her full sculpt, which we now know is 1/7th scale. Featuring her signature ribbon bra that makes absolutely no sense, Hestia here looks pretty spot on to her in show model. That said, now that we’re getting some other angles of her, one thing really ridiculously bugs me about their sculpt of her: her breast sculpt is completely nonsensical, which is the exact opposite of what DanMachi portrays as Hestia is always drawn with more lifelike breasts that would not float like this. I’d really like to see her bust redone before she goes into production as breasts, especially ones held up by a ribbon, do not act like how they are here — gravity is a thing, guys! Now onto Kotobukiya’s other figure on hand: Saber from Fate Stay/Night: Unlimited Blade Works, the It Girl of the last like… 10 years. It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a figure of Saber in her standard blue dress with armor outfit and I’m a bit on the fence with Koto’s version here. Everything’s executed well in the sculpt, but sadly she’s just standing there. Yes, it’s an iconic pose for her, but after having just so many Saber figures to choose from, many of which have incredibly dynamic poses compared to this, it just feels like it’s a figure aimed at no one as most collectors are still suffering from Saber fatigue. • MegaHobby is a pretty predictable event: we get pretty much the same companies every year, time after time. So when you see a figure that’s not with any of those manufacturers, it’s kind of surprising. You pause and say, “what? It’s by… who now?” That was pretty much my reaction when I saw this figure of Alice from Hello!! Kiniro Mosaic by Revolve. Revolve is a pretty tiny company who only has a few releases, and honestly this kind of looks like a MegaHouse figure, right? But it’s not. IT IS SO CUTE THOUGH. I just wanna pinch her cheeks, aaaah! ADORABLE! [via Oyj’s Twitter]

  • Amakuni, unsurprisingly, showed up at MegaHobby–I mean, Hobby Japan is one of the founders… and they are Hobby Japan’s figure manufacturer. We already saw what we have in the works for the Seven Deadly Sins, but what else is up their sleeves? Unsurprisingly, they brought both the figures they just showed off in magazine scans: Hestia and Momohime! I have to say, I was excited for Momo but she does not look so great here. Maybe it’s the event lighting but I HATE the expression and the sculpt is lackluster. Hestia, though… I don’t like her design but I like this sculpt. It’s like opposite day up in here! [via figsoku]

  • We’ve already seen quite a few of the figures MegaHouse brought to MegaHobby (Digimon, Sailor Moon, Bikini Warriors), but what else did they have on display? One Piece. Like, a whole lot of One Piece. Bikini Nami, action figure bikini Nami, bikini Boa and Robin we can’t show you… I’m so tired of One Piece. If I never have to write up another Nami figure I’ll sacrifice a baby to the figure gods. Oh, there were some other things too! Like the header girl, the totally adorable Kiraseiten Arcana. And Erina Nakiri from Shokugeki no Souma! Oh, and they brought a figure of Angela Balzac… behind frosted glass. Wow, so smart. Check them out and more in the gallery. [via figsoku]
