  • After years of waiting, we finally have a release date for Persona 5 (in Japan, at least). And you know what that means? THE HYPE TRAIN IS LEAVING THE STATION. Also, you know, it’s safe for companies to start pumping out figures. You know we’re going to get so many, especially of Anne and Squid-chan. But they’re starting small, with a 2-minifigure bundle that will be part of a special edition. Morgana and the Protagonist will both be chibified by Toy’s Works for the Famitsu DX Bundle. Which will cost you a cool ¥12,000 for the cheapest option (though there’s one for ¥20,000 if you’ve got cash to blow). Of course we don’t know yet if we’ll be getting this here in the US, but I’m hoping so. I’m also hoping for a September US release, so… we’ll see. [via Famitsu]

  • I have talked at length about my love for Neko Atsume, which is only the world’s greatest game. Even though it sure is testing my patience right now by glitching out and stopping the new rare kitties from appearing, grumble grumble. But something like that doesn’t stop me from wanting all the kitty merchandise! Today we’re taking a look at Bandai’s desktop figure set #2. Number 3 went up for order a little while ago, but these guys just came out! And it’s like a little cafe set, aww. So cute, so precious. Of course orders are no longer open for this one but they’re quite easy to snag on Yahoo Japan! and Rakuten if you have a proxy–and come on, we all know tiny kitties are worth the extra fees. [via ToySanta]

  • It’s been a good time to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan! Before we had the regular, pretty basic toys but recently we’ve had all kinds of good stuff like the Good Smile TMNT statues and Kidrobot’s figures. This year at Toy Fair they unveiled a whole new line, which will include a new line of minifigures: the Shell Shock series, which is full of both good guys and villains from the ’80’s cartoon. We also have two medium-size figures of Shredder and Triceraton. Did you ever stop and think about how weird the TMNT world is? I mean, we have mutant turtles fighting ninjas and humanoid dinosaurs?? How high were the creators.

  • Given my passionate love for cats, it will come as a surprise to no one that I am absolutely obsessed with Neko Atsume. I have all the treasures, I check my cats like 15 times a day. It’d be a problem if it wasn’t so damn cute. And of course I love the merchandise too, and have way too much of it. So very many cat plushes. It seems to be something of a figure juggernaut in Japan–sadly, stuff is hard to find on regular sites like AmiAmi and Hobby Search, but don’t worry! This new set of minifigures is available on Play-Asia, though only as random singles. Personally, I’m going to wait for full sets to pop up on Yahoo Japan, but they don’t come out until May so it’ll be a long wait. Meanwhile I’ll just entertain myself by imagining the shennanigans I can get up to with a figure of Billy the Kitten, that nihilistic joker we all love. [UPDATE] The set is also available on HLJ, thanks so much to Kenneos for the heads up!

  • We’ve seen quite a few figures of Danboard from Yotsuba&! in the past years, but this is a totally new, out of left field addition: cat Danboard. Or Nyanboard, as they’re called. It’s literally what it sounds like: Danboard with cat ears and a tail, plus matching kitty patterns. AMAZING. This basically everything I’ve ever wanted even though I didn’t know I wanted it. These minifigures are manufactured by Sentinel, and there are a bunch of different ordering options. If you live in Japan, you can buy an individual blind box for ¥630 when they come out in November. There are also three sets: Sweet (white, pointed, bicolor tabby), Bitter (black, brown calico, grey bicolor), and Mild (tabby, orange calico, black bicolor) for ¥2,100 each. And then you can of course get the whole set for ¥7,000 which includes the bonus “plain” Nyanboard. Um yes please, I will take all of the Danboard kitties. AmiAmi: Full Set | Mild | Bitter | Sweet Hobby Search: Full Set Big In Japan: Full Set

  • With the Cardcaptor Sakura license finally getting released to toy companies, we are getting a much-needed flood of merchandise. Well actually, it’s more like a trickle: so far we have a prize figure and a Nendoroid. Clearly, that is not enough! Thankfully, Banpresto is hopping on board with some amazing prize figures. I mean, they’re lottery prizes and you will probably need to sell your kidney to buy one on the aftermarket but still… The bigger A prize of Sakura herself is, for once, not what is capturing my interest! No, I am ALL ABOUT the chibi minifigures of Sakura in her cat and headwing outfits, the mini Kero and a TEENY LI. They’re so precious. Not all the prizes have been announced yet, so you can bet there will be cards and plates and mugs and stuff as well. [via Ichiban Kuji]

  • While my interest in vinyl is continually waning, there are a few things that will always pull me back in: creepy/cute, and anything by the amazing duo of Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas. Stephen and I have been collecting their figures for a long time now, and we were beyond excited at the release of their Wandering Misfits miniseries which features a whole lot of Skelves… and you know how we feel about those. Only these ones are small, made out of vinyl, and a whole lot more affordable! We snagged an entire case along with a few store exclusives and thought that there would be nowhere better to bring this devious group than to an old cemetery in my hometown. All shots are, of course, by Stephen Donaldson, though I helped out a bit with set direction (aka sticking toys on gravestones–cute, and morbid!). Check them all out in the gallery, and let us know if you snatched up any of these Misfits–they do seem to be wandering off shelves at a rather alarming rate.

  • Remember the kind of creepy chibi comic figures we saw from Square-Enix and Kidrobot this Toy Fair? Well, this is like… the anime version of that. Trexis are a vinyl platform that hasn’t seen a lot of use in the past few years, but apparently it is being revived… and not with the designer vinyl crew, but with popular anime characters. Now you can get Bleach, Tiger & Bunny, Naruto, and Death Note figures on a kind of weird platform! This seems like Barnes & Noble weeabo fodder unless you really like the weird Lego hands, but maybe I’m just in a particularly judgmental state of mind. What do you think of these oddities, Plastikitties?

  • Did you look at the header and think “hmm, is this supposed to be a post about Bluefin? Or maybe Kidrobot?” Nope, turns out just about every vinyl company has hopped on to the “picking up popular licenses” train! It’s a really interesting turn: when I started collecting it was all about local artists and not selling out. Now, it’s…. Power Rangers! And Mr. Potato Head, Transformers, and G.I Joe. Obviously, from a profit standpoint, this is a clear decision to make. And these little guys were pretty cute! They also had big Chaos Bunnies to compliment the amazing minis we already looked at.

  • I must have spent half my childhood begging my parents for a pet rabbit. But we had cats (who might eat a rabbit), and guinea pigs (who a rabbit would beat up), so though I tried valiantly for years I never did get a bunny. Thankfully the toy world has a wonderful solution for me: Joe Ledbetter’s Chaos Bunnies! We have seen these guys in larger formats for years, but they were both rare and expensive which left many of us in the dust. Now, thankfully, we’re getting a miniseries which really couldn’t be more cute. Hoola Bunny, Hummingbird Bunny, Faerie Bunny, they are SO CUTE! Check out the full lineup after the jump.
