  • Amakuni is moving on up in the world. They used to be a company totally under my radar: they released only a handful of figures a month, tended to focus on fanservice, and only made exclusives. Well, the last two are still true, but they are ramping up their production (and quality!) like woah based on their MegaHobby display. The star of the show is definitely Anne Takamaki from Persona 5, along with an announcement for Makoto Niijima. I hope this is the first of many announcements for the game! We also have shockingly original duo-figure of Megaman X and Zero, a ton of Kantai Collection (Kashima, Ooyoda, Haruna, Libeccio, and Mutsu), the addition of Yuzuruha to their Muramasa line (along with alternate “wet” versions of Momohime and Kongiku), their cute Sonico which is ruined by the boobs, Orange Heart from the Neptunia franchise, and so much more. Like Ryoubi from Senran Kagura, a bunny version of Sword & Wizards‘ Fuyuka Yukishiro, the painted Deena Challenger, Cleric from Bikini Warriors, and announcement for Alice Shimada from Girls und Panzer, and the way too perfect Cyan from Show By Rock. I want so many of these figures… [via 1up]

  • When we found out that Alter would be making a recolor of their Momohime, I was at first skeptical. However, I quickly jumped on the hype train when I realized we might be getting her gorgeous orange alternate outfit. Well, we’re getting the reveal a bit earlier than I thought (I imagined they’d wait until MegaHobby, which is this weekend) and… yeah, not what I expected. Instead of a bold recolor we’re getting a slightly altered and subdued take on her. It’s really not even that different! More muted, more warm-toned, and her eyes have a lovely red rim that makes her look hungover. Okay, it still looks beautiful, but the original is just so stunning that I wish we got something more exciting for this take on her. Orders open tonight. [via Alter’s Blog]

  • Alter’s original Momohime is one of my all-time favorite figures. Top 5, probably, which is really saying something given how many I have and her relative age. But Momohime has held up as an example of a perfect figure: the sculpt, the paint, the pose, the mood, the base… it’s just everything you could want. She’s gotten quite a few re-releases over the years, but they’re going a different route for this one. Because it’s a recolor! I have to wonder why–with so many re-releases they know she’s popular, why not do another sculpt? Her original colors are just so amazing I’m having a hard time getting behind this. But I’ll probably order her anyway. [via Alter’s Blog]

  • Miyazawa Model Expo is an event I forget about every year. I can tell you exactly when Wonder Festival and MegaHobby are, but Miyazawa Model? Yeah, it’s the event that time forgot. Or Leah’s brain, whichever. As always, Good Smile Company and their umbrella manufacturers brought a ton of goodies to the event. We have figmas and Nendoroids out the wazoo, including some newly painted and sculpted goodies. Phat! and Max Factory brought many of their gorgeous IDOLM@STER girls, including MF’s Ranko who is so very swoon-worthy. We’ve got giant girls from FREEing (man, Hestia’s cast-off is painfully noticeable), Good Smile’s Link, and tons more. Check them out in the gallery below! [via Digitamin]

  • Amakuni, unsurprisingly, showed up at MegaHobby–I mean, Hobby Japan is one of the founders… and they are Hobby Japan’s figure manufacturer. We already saw what we have in the works for the Seven Deadly Sins, but what else is up their sleeves? Unsurprisingly, they brought both the figures they just showed off in magazine scans: Hestia and Momohime! I have to say, I was excited for Momo but she does not look so great here. Maybe it’s the event lighting but I HATE the expression and the sculpt is lackluster. Hestia, though… I don’t like her design but I like this sculpt. It’s like opposite day up in here! [via figsoku]

  • Alter’s Momohime is, without question, one of the best figures ever made. It was hyped up insanely before release and ended up being even better than we all expected: good enough to get a re-release, something Alter is always hesitant to do. But after that…. there was nothing else of her, which seemed strange. But, years later, that is about to change because Amakuni is making a figure of her! Granted, it’s a fanservice-y bathing figure, but after this long Momo drought I am just so excited to see more figures of her! Oh, and they showed off their Hestia too, who looks as cute as you’d expect. I still like Kotobukiya’s more, though honestly a sculpt of her would have to impress me a LOT to make me pay proxy/exclusive fees. [via sgr’s Twitter]

  • Phat! is really the dark horse of the figure world. They’re smaller, sure, and one of GSC’s sister companies, but the giants seem to overshadow them. These past few years, however, they’ve been going at it with everything they’ve got, bringing us interesting licenses and great sculpts. It seems like 2015 will be no exception! The biggest announcement (for me) is my waifu Rise in her Dancing All Night outfit. I LOVE IT! Of course we had some Kantai Colletion in the form of Zuiho, and IDOLMSTER: both Makoto and Yukiho have updates. And while there’s no new Cinderella Girls figures, we have Anastasia coming down the line, along with Million Live’s Yuriko Nanao. There’s tons of other announcements: Angela Balzac (the darling of this WonFes), Sinon, and Fumi Kanno from Devil Survivor 2. What?! Excitement! There are some sculpts too, of course: Yui Mikoze and her elaborate… suit? from Futsuu no Joshikousei ga [Locodol] Yatte Mita and then a pair of girls from Shirohime Quest. And last but not least? A little chibi poseable Momohime!

  • It’s about time Stephen and I put up some of our older photoshoots onto the site! Momohime definitely qualifies: her shoot was 2 years ago. But for both of us she marked an important milestone, a turning point of sorts for how we worked on galleries. Leah: While we certainly took figure reviews seriously before, Momo was a first in many ways. For one, she was the first figure Stephen shot in RAW. It was also the first time we’d done a gallery shoot rather than a review one (meaning no box shots, detail shots, etc) so I really put a lot more thought into her surroundings and positioning. We did a lot of risky things with her (like balancing her on a leaf 6 feet above the ground!), a theme that’s definitely continued in our outdoor shoots. Momo taught us that risks really pay off: I think this still remains my favorite shoot we’ve ever done! Stephen: Considering that the shot used in the header here has been my background on my laptop ever since this shoot really says quite a bit about this. I also remember distinctly that the set of shoots I did this day was the first time I bothered really trying out my 50mm lens, which was a world of difference from my kit lens. Couple that with Leah’s aunt’s gorgeous land and this shoot just flowed. Surprisingly, this shoot was actually two and not one as all of the waterfall shots were done in a different location on another day, and that’s something that I’ve had very other figures be able to do: inspire me enough to shoot them more than once and in multiple locations. Now that we’re in the concrete jungle of New York City every day it makes me sad that I can’t do shoots like this more often as the feel here is just so other-worldly and magical, so enjoy! So hit the jump and check out our full gallery of this spectacular figure!

  • Alter’s Momohime is hailed as one of the all-time best figures, so it seems odd that she was the only figure they made from Oboro Muramasa. Well, it turns out they are making more! In several pre-WonFest images of Alter’s booth, you can see some concept art of Kongiku, the gorgeous fox girl. To go along with her they are also re-releasing Momohime (and Saber Maid as well). It doesn’t look like there’s a prototype of Kongiku yet, though hopefully they put one out for the show! [via mfc]
