Ms Marvel Archive

  • I am rarely tempted by event-exclusive PVC figures or statues but I have to say, guys, I wanted Kotobukiya’s NYCC Spider-Man ArtFX+ really badly. He’s got a scarf and a warm hat and earmuffs and my goodness is he adorable! Also toasty. I mean, it was 82 for most of Comic Con (yes, in NYC in October) so he was a bit overdressed. But still cute. Kotobukiya had quite a few other Marvel cuties at their booth, like Bishoujo Ms. Marvel who was just released, and their gorgeous Statue Arts Spider-Man. Also Bish Squirrel Girl, my one true love. Check them out and more in the gallery!

  • On the first day of Toy Fair, we brought you the debut of Kotobukiya’s Ms Marvel Bishoujo. But as per usual, we also got to take her out for a little spin! I mean that literally, because we gently put them on a table and spin ’em around to get all the angles. It’s very professional and fancy, you know. I’m really loving the new direction the Bishoujo line seems to be taking. Sure, I love the classic sexy style Shunya brings to a lot of them (and that’s certainly not going away anytime soon), but I also appreciate the softer take some of them have been getting. Like Squirrel Girl or Ms Marvel, where the focus is more on cuteness than “wow T&A!” It’s not a style that fits every superheroine, so it’s nice to see the line both expanding to fit those girls but also changing a bit so they still look Shunya-illustrated but also not out of character!

  • Yesterday, Kotobukiya gave us a little teaser of the art for their new Ms Marvel. So I was expecting the art to show up at Toy Fair… as we all were. Well surprise, they had the fully painted sculpt on display! We were a little shocked to see here there, but also very excited. The sculpt looks so soft and cute. It’s nice to see that they went for a softer, less sexed-up look for her but still kept the Shunya elements. I hope that this is a trend–first Squirrel Girl, now this. It’s a nice change of pace! Her ribbons flowing in the wind are particularly appealing. What do you guys think?

  • Kotobukiya had a panel at New York Comic Con today, and with it we got quite a few brand-new announcements! Including, of course, quite a few from their Bishoujo lines. We have the info for the next Marvel Bishoujo: Ms. Marvel! Yes, they did one of her before, but this is a different character: the new Kamala Khan, who I am very excited for. She’s such a unique character in the Marvel universe, and I’m loving the brief silhouette they showed off. Between her, Spider Gwen, and Squirrel Girl, I’m really looking forward to the new direction their Marvel line is going in.

  • At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Kotobukiya’s signature Bishoujo figures were out in full force with quite a few new additions as well. From movies, to video games, to comics, there’s something for everyone here. First up were the continuations of the Marvel and DC Bishoujo lines with the additions of a black colorway of Batgirl and Poison Ivy for DC and Mystique, X-23, and Elektra for Marvel. The new colorway of Batgirl will be available in December for $59.99 and Poison Ivy will be available in February for $64.99, and both look quite great in person. Poison Ivy’s detailed sculpt with her many whisps of hair and tentacle plants is quite impressive in person and I can’t wait to see the final product. On the Marvel end of things, Elektra will be coming out late this year with X-23 and Mystique to follow early next year, and all 3 have a retail price of $59.99. I really love the way that Mystique and X-23 have been captured in these sculpts; the character’s personalities as well as Shunya Yamashita’s unique style really shine through and really work well together. Next up were the new announcements of video game bishoujo figures with the announcement of a Tekken line and a Mass Effect 3 Liara. The Tekken line, which had been revealed a few weeks ago, so far contains Christie Monteiro and Alisa Bosconovitch from Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and will begin releasing with Christie at the end of the year and Alisa shortly after early next year. Having now seen Christie in person, the few changes made to her outfit really don’t detract from her character at all and the detailing on the back of her shirt is really stunning in person. Sitting next to this announcement was the shocker of Liara from Mass Effect 3, which is about as far from a Japanese game franchise as one could get. Liara will be the first in a series of figures and was only shown off in concept art, but from what we were shown, I can’t wait to see the final sculpt, which should be soon as she’s set to be released before the end of the year. Last and not least, the movie bishoujo line has not been forgotten. While there were no new announcements on hand at Comic Con, the recently released Ghostbusters Lucy was on hand as well as confirmation that the next series that will get a release is Star Wars. Be sure to hit the jump to check out all of the bishoujos on hand at the Kotobukiya booth at San Diego Comic Con 2011 and leave your thoughts in a comment about what other bishoujos you’d like to see!
