  • Benten is a figure who has taken my breath away from the moment I saw him. It was a risky move on Max Factory’s part, taking on a relatively unknown character… and especially doing an elaborate sculpt for him like this that is sure to create a very high pricetag. But I think once most of us saw him painted, there was no question that the “preorder” button would be hit the second orders opened. In case there was any doubt in your mind left, Kahotan has a huge and glorious gallery full of oodles of shots of this absolutely perfect figure. Which, just in case you are wondering, is already way ahead on my favorites of 2014 list! Orders open on the 23rd, and while I’m scared to find out the price I really can’t wait. note: absolutely no transphobic language will be tolerated on Plastikitty, including the word “trap” and any derogatory discussion of gender & sexuality. Keep it respectful, people! [via Kahotan]

  • One of my favorite figures from this past Summer WonFest was definitely Max Factory’s jaw-dropping sculpt of Benten from ZONE-00. It’s sculpted by Nanako, Chieri’s protege, and shows his influence loud and clear. The thinly spiraled hair and detailed wings pretty much scream “Chieri” to the point where I was about 90% sure this was his work! So good job, Nanako. You’ve come pretty far since that first Shining Wind figure. To many people’s surprise, Benten was revealed to be a (biologically, at least) male character, who chooses to dress & act in  a feminine manner. For some people this made Benten a instant no-buy but come on, this is a totally gorgeous figure! Especially painted, uhnf. Those wings! note: absolutely no transphobic language will be tolerated on Plastikitty, including the word “trap” and any derogatory discussion of gender & sexuality. Keep it respectful, people! • Max Factory’s se.kirara line has to be one of the slowest-moving things in the PVC world. They were announced years ago, and were all sculpted about a year ago, yet we’re only now on the third of the five girls. First was Aya Kagura, then Izumi Shizuno, and now it’s the shy, adorable Nozomi Akiyama! She was one of my favorites in the figma line because of her shy presence and awesome green hair, and they’ve done a good job transitioning her to 3D. This whole line is being worked on by Chieri and Nanako, the same duo responsible for their Shining Wind swimsuit line, so of course the sculpt is super adorable. She’s priced quite reasonably at ¥7,800, especially considering that the other 1/7 scale girls in it were closer to 1/6. Nozomi will go up for order this week and is set for an April release. I wonder when we’ll see Mana and Yuu? [via the figma blog]

  • Male figures tend to be in plain poses more often than not, so we were thrilled at the announcement of Max Factory’s  intricate Aoba from DRAMAtical Murder. He was painted at Wonder Festival, and I guessed that he’d come with a large pricetag. Well… unfortunately, I was more right than I thought I’d be! Max Factory has shown off Aoba’s promotional photos, along with his release info: he’s scheduled for March and will run you ¥14,095 before discounts. Ouch! While Good Smile & co have gotten a bit trigger-happy when it comes to pricing, it’s hard to argue against how awesome this figure is. The detail is kind of insane, and it’s certainly a unique pose! Add in the lovely blue color scheme and the adorable dog Ren and I’m sold, even if he will cost an arm and a leg. [via the figma blog]

  • Let’s face it: there are a lot of male figures out there (most from MegaHouse and Altair) but they don’t get nearly the level of detail as female figures. To them, “dynamic” means standing there wielding a sword or sitting. We never get something like a male version of Black Rock Shooter… until now. Totally out of left field, Max Factory has just revealed this amazing figure of Aoba from DRAMAtical Murder in full-on diorama mode. Look at all that detail! The weirdest thing? It’s sculpted by Nanako, who to date has done only the Shining Wind bikini girls and Xiao-Mei (review). Guess she’s finally showing off her full potential! [via 2tohei’s Twitter]

  • Well, we’ve all waited for quite some time for more figures from the Persona games and now, at long last, we’re getting a whole ton of  them from prize figure maker Special Kuji! We can all do a victory dance and jump for joy with Teddie now as the Persona 4 characters are getting a few different prize figures here in different styles too with some being more standard static figures and others closer to a Nendoroid style. First up, as seen in the header, is our protagonist Shujinkou and he’s looking like one badass guy in this figure. I’m glad to finally see a figure of him and even though this is a prize figure, they did not skimp on the sculpting at all. Next up is his persona, Izanagi, who is in a much more dynamic pose than the Megahouse figure that is also coming out of him. While he looks a little less detailed than the Megahouse version, he’s still an amazing figure especially considering his price and I can’t wait to add him to my collection. That’s not all though for static figures, we also were teased that a Chie and Yukiko will be coming along with the possibility of up to four more characters seen in those mystery screens in the gallery below. Also shown off are some cute chibi figures that, quite frankly, are the best chibi figures I’ve seen outside of Nendoroids; most chibi figures look too fat and lose a lot of detail, but these look quite amazing! We have images so far of Rise and Nanako, both of which look adorable might I add, and confirmation that Chie and Naoto will be coming as well! I really can’t wait to see what else is revealed and I hope that these won’t be too hard to get, despite the fact that they will be a lottery system with each entry being ¥800, but this is most certainly a step in the right direction as more Persona figures, especially ones this well made, are always a welcome addition! Who do you want to see that wasn’t shown off? I know I personally would love a figure of Kanji, but let us know your picks in the comments below. [via Special Kuji’s Persona 4 website and Twitter]
