New 52 Archive

As a companion line to Kotobukiya’s New 52 ArtFX+, they announced a Villains Forever expansion a few years ago featuring, you guessed it, some of DC’s top villains. I was really expecting more heroes after the Justice League so it was a pleasant surprise, and the initial announcement had a pretty interesting mix of villains.
They were all on display and sculpted at San Diego Comic Con: the Joker, Sinestro, Bizarro, Lex Luthor, Captain Cold, and the star of the show Gorilla Grodd. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want a skull-wielding monkey in their collection?

I tend to have very mixed feelings about the Joker. I love almost all of his many permutations, but when I hate one (like The Killing Joke Joker or New 52 Joker) I really hate them. I mean, I certainly have bigger New 52 issues than the Joker (Wonder Woman’s new backstory, why?), but he’s certainly not my fave. Even if the whole peeling off his face thing did make for some cool panels.
But, of course, lots of people love New 52 Joker! So it’s not very surprising that Kotobukiya added him to their New 52 Villains ArtFX+. And even I am almost won over by him: the pose is just so clever, with the knife showing but the gun hidden behind his back. His body looks almost broken, which is definitely fitting for his character: such odd angles! Check him out in full after the jump.

We’ve already seen a bit of Kotobukiya’s New52 Villain ArtFX+ line at New York Comic Con, but it turns out they had a whole lot of updates on it at the panel. Like, way more than I was expecting. We got the Joker sculpt (definitely not a surprise–he’s like the #1 DC villain, so of course we’re getting him!), and this is their first figure of him with the jacked up face. There are two versions: an exclusive half-shaven head one, and a regular release.
Then we have two announcements: Bizarro and Sinestro! I was really hoping that the Bizarro art wasn’t just a tease, and indeed we are getting him! I hope Sinestro joining the line means we might get some Red Lanterns. Rage Kitty, plz.

Comic villains seem to be pretty damn popular lately. We’ve got the Suicide Squad movie, an entire season of Gotham based on the baddies, and Kotobukiya’s Villains Forever figure line! We saw the Lex Luthor at SDCC, but there has been some progress since then: Red Robin and Red Hood were out as well! No surprise that for the start they’re sticking with some of the more popular guys–but if the concept art is any indication, we’ll be getting a really great mix–including Bizarro? I sure hope so!

I will admit that while I have been impressed by the sculpting and price point on the New 52 ArtFX+ line by Kotobukiya, none of the characters in it so far have piqued my interest enough for me to go “oh god I need that!” Well, maybe Batman, but I already have quite a few figures of him.
But once Supergirl was announced, all bets were off. I greatly prefer her to her OP male counterpart, and I am among the very small group of people that actually like her New 52 outfit redesign. I just like the knee cutouts, so sue me!

DC had a LOT on display at Toy Fair, though their booth was actually fairly small and tucked into the back of Diamond. They made very good use of their space, and aside from the figures we already showed you… well, there’s a lot more. So let’s dive in! There’s the BatMan Cave line which features a chess set, dartboard, pool sticks, poker set, and a utility belt, so you can have the coolest Man/Woman Cave on the block (because girls like Batman too, DC.). Seriously, if you get these can I come hang out at your house?
We’ve got some stuff for kids: plush and wooden block play set. So cute! Now you can push your child into comic addiction from birth. Of course there were tons of action figures: New 52 Action Figures Series 2, Greg Capullo Action Figures series 1 and 2, and Justice League War Action Figures. Action figures from Arrow made an appearance, along with Vertigo’s Death porcelain doll who I find a little… unsettling. Last but not least is the adorable Scribblenauts Unmasked blind boxed line, which I absolutely NEED in my life.

It feels like we have seen the main lineup of the Justice League ArtFX+ a whole lot over the past year or so, right? But thankfully those were not the only New 52 characters Kotobukiya had out, so there are some new (convention-wise) faces being added to the mix! Supergirl (who we will be reviewing very soon), Batgirl, Nightwing, Shazam, Black Adam, and Catwoman all showed up. Check them out in the gallery below!

Back at NYCC during Kotobukiya’s panel, they showed off a bunch of new ArtFX+ statues in their DC Comics line including an unpainted Batgirl. Babs here is based on her New 52 design and, I guess was a favorite of both DC and Kotobukiya as she’s the first one painted, and boy does she look great! Her paint is similar to the alternate colorway Batgirl Bishoujo that came out featuring black and gold paint with Babs’ signature red hair and mixes glossy and matte paint quite well. No word on a price yet, but expect her to be in the $39.99 range and she’ll be available to swoop down from the rafters in June of 2014.

There were a ton of new announcements in regards to DC Comics figures at the Kotobukiya panel: they announced a 1/6th scale Wonder Woman ArtFX, a Superman For Tomorrow 1/6th ArtFX coming in January 2014 for $119.99, a New 52 Batgirl 1/10th scale ArtFX+, and a Green Arrow 1/10th scale ArtFX+. Phew! Also shown off was the recently released Man of Steel ArtFX along with the ArtFX+ figures of Catwoman, Nightwing, Shazam, Black Adam, and Supergirl. It was also heavily hinted at that more members of the bat family will be seeing their way into the ArtFX+ line soon — maybe Batwoman or Damien? Last, but not least, they also premiered the sculpt of Batgirl, so be sure to go check that out in the gallery.

Welp… we knew this day would come eventually. Starfire is far from a main character in the DC universe but she’s quite popular and given her outfit (or lack of one) she kind of seems perfect for the Bishoujo line. Fans have been clamoring for her to join the lineup since it first started, and they’ve finally got their wish. But sadly this is definitely New 52 Starfire–all fanservice, no character.
I mean, come on, even for Shunya this is totally tasteless. She’s straddling a meteor. The pose is just… wow. And the outfit. We can see enough of her boobs, she doesn’t need to squish them together. It’s a shame, because there are some aspects I really like: her hair is gorgeous, and the purple and orange color combo is to die for. But this is one Bish I am not looking forward to.
