Sakura Wars Archive

Sometimes I think Volks exists just to drive collectors crazy. All of their offerings are either wildly expensive, nearly impossible to get, or look nothing like the promotional shots unless you put in a lot of hard work. In most cases, it’s a combination of these. Sakura here actually hits all 3: she’s an exclusive to Hobby Round 9 (hard to get), costs ¥14,000 (pretty overpriced for 1/8), and is part of their CharaGumin line (meaning you’ll have to do a lot of shading and painting to get her to look like Volks’ shots).
So there are a whole lot of reasons not to get her. But on the other hand… she’s so pretty! Look at her pose, that base! Also, come on, it’s Sakura Wars, the most ridiculous show about actresses ever. They’re actresses… who put on plays… and then get in robots and save Japan. How can you resist? And hey, she’s cheaper than the Dollfie Dream version!

Welcome to two months of loot in one! Actually it’s kind of three: as you may or may not have noticed, we didn’t have a August loot post either. It’s a long story, but basically AmiAmi has been smushing our orders together oddly so we get things late (but some early–most of our October was here before the September items). So some August items squeaked their way in! Hit the jump to get started on our most action-packed loot post yet.

A few days ago, Volks teased the figures they’d have for Hobby Round 8. Well we already saw Prinny, and Asuna was apparently marked Do Not Photograph (though she’s sculpted), but we have the other two here! Both are CharaGumin kits, which means pre-painted (but not shaded) resin kits. Revy is looking particularly badass, though as you can see her sculpt isn’t entirely finished. Yukari Akiyama looks great, but I do find the designs from Girls und Panzer kind of dull. They also had the already-painted Miho Nishizumi on hand, who was released at the event. Their Moekore Amil was there too, but with no updates sadly.
As for announcements, we have a few! They’ll be doing a PVC version of Lyfa from Sword Art Online, garage kits of Erica Fontaine and the titular Sakura Shinguji from Sakura Wars, and finally CharaGumin figures of HUnewearl and FOnewearl from Phantasy Star Online 2. For some reason PLUM was there as well, and we have a glimpse at the back of their Okarin!

Sakura Wars/Sakura Taisen‘s main heroine Sakura Shinguji sure is popular recently, with a Nendoroid and Dollfie Dream on the way! Now it seems she’s getting a scaled figure, courtesy of Volks which of course means it’ll be an exclusive… and expensive. However, it’s been quite a while since we got a scaled Sakura and there certainly aren’t any high-quality versions of her out there for fans this is a blessing as well as a curse!

It looks like Volks USA is gearing up for the Hometown Dolpa Sendai lottery! Sadly, we have a lot of bad news for all you doll collectors out there. Firstly, Miki and Haruka will NOT be seeing a US release, in fact they aren’t even confirmed for an international release yet. A shame, since I was really looking forward to Miki. The second bit of bad news is that they’ve changed their exchange rate: while dolls used to be about $600 on the USA site, Sakura is $811! Which kind of negates the point of the US lottery to be honest, since not only are the prices the same but you have a 3 month wait. That used to be a fair tradeoff for the pricing, but I think the US lottery is going to fall in popularity soon enough.
The items up for lottery are DD Sakura ($811), SDGrB Hasekura ($1,581), Sakura’s Battle Outfit ($176), the Magical Ruby set ($131), the Magical Aqua set ($127), and finally DD Rise‘s glasses ($52). They open on August 12th at 11AM PST and close on August 15th at 11AM PST and you can check out all their pages here. I think Rise’s glasses are the only thing I’ll be going for this time!

Hometown Dolpa Sendai is about a month away, and we actually got a peek at the 3 Dollfie Dream releases a bit early this time! The “big” release is Sakura Shinguji from Sakura Wars/Sakura Taisen, who we’ve already gotten a closer look at. I am still not a fan of the face sculpt they went with, but what I do really like is her alternate battle outfit! Like Sakura this will be a lottery item, with a retail price of ¥12,800. And thankfully the rumors about Sakura being an event-exclusive seem to be false and she will have an International lottery event (though no word on the US lottery right now)! I’m really hoping that Sakura is popular enough for us to see more girls from the series: it has a bunch of designs I’d love to see in doll form.

We found out the 3 dolls that would be released at Hometown Dolpa Sendai a few days ago, but it’s hard to judge them based on blurry pictures-of-pictures. Of course Volks is swooping in with some nicer shots of these lovely girls, and unsurprisingly Sakura Shinguji from Sakura Wars/Sakura Taisen is up first! This is a project that they’ve been hyping for months and months, so we can guess that a lot more work went into her than other DD releases.
The level of detail is clear in her outfit, weapon, and wig, which look amazing. However, I am so not sold on the face as it looks nothing like Sakura. Granted, I don’t require my DDs to look identical to the character, but not only is she very un-Sakura, she also looks like several of Volks’ previous releases (the DDH-06 and Reimu). I was hoping for something unique for her, though I’m sure she will still sell very well. Her retail will be ¥59,000 and she’ll be released at the event, which takes place August 12th. There’s a nasty rumor floating around that she might be event-only (i.e. no lottery) but it has yet to be confirmed.

New Dollfie Dream reveals are always an exciting event. Hometown Dolpa Sendai and the DD Gathering are coming up soon, and we’re getting the reveals about a month early as usual: there will be three new DDs at the event. The first is DD Sakura Shinguji from Sakura Wars/Sakura Taisen, who we’ve know about for a long time now. She will be a DDIII S-bust priced at ¥61,960. She will also have an alternate battle uniform outfit!
Next up is the surprising reveal of two of the Idolm@ster girls in their Luxury outfits! Haruka Amami will be a Dollfie Dream Sister M-bust priced at ¥59,850. Then we’ve got Miki Hoshii, also a DDS, with an L-bust who will also cost ¥59,850. It seems like either Volks is doing some fancy photoshopping or we might be getting yet another updated body: note that there are no seamlines on Miku & Haruka’s busts. I am absolutely in love with Miki’s face: she is gorgeous! Haruka does have an interesting sculpt and I’ll be looking forward to more shots of her, but at the moment I am disappointed with Sakura, who looks to much like the DDH-06 for my taste.
[UPDATE] Updated will full body shots of Haruka & Miki.
[UPDATE 2] It seems like Miki & Haruka will come with not one but two extra outfits each–Floral and school-themed! Pictures in the gallery [via HunwariTime]

I have very fond memories of watching Sakura Wars (aka Sakura Taisen) as a kid with my parents. Laughing at the ridiculous premise (Japan is being attacked and only actresses who pilot mechas can save it!) and absolutely adoring the cheesy fun. It also has some great and now-classic game designs, especially its heroine Sakura Shinguji. It’s the 15th anniversary of the series so she is getting a lot of love from figure manufacturers with both a Dollfie Dream and this Nendoroid in the works. We first saw the Nendo unveiled at Wonder Festival and I’ve been really anticipating her ever since.
Sakura only comes with a few faces and accessories: there’s her happy face, a fighting face, and a sword. But the last accessory really makes up for the seeming sparseness (and will probably jack up the price)–her mecha, Koubu! This is an amazing figure, and of course you can fit Sakura (and many other Nendoroids) inside of it. Sakura herself is also quite lovely, with some beautiful print-work on her kimono. And considering how many Nendo faces are already out there her limited options don’t seem so bad: personally, the first thing I am going to do with her is put her in Koubu with Saber’s infamous Tantrum face! These two should be going up sometime this week.

There are a LOT of Nendoroids at Wonder Festival, so we are breaking them down a bit. First, Nendoroids from games! We already showed you Yukiko, but there are a lot more. For full-sized we have Vocaloids Gumi and Gakupo, Estelle and Renee from Trails in the Sky (aka Eiyu Densetsu: Sora No Kiseki), Kokoro from Tantei Opera, Sakura from Sakura Wars, the casual Saber, and Alice from Touhou Project!
For Petit sets we have the maid Fate/Stay Night set, an adorable Idolm@ster set, Append versions of Miku Rin & Len, and last but not least Tales of Vesperia boys Jude and Yuri! Phew, that’s a lot of stuff–check them all out in the gallery!
