SDCC 2015 Archive

  • Years ago, Yes Anime used to be just another importer of PVC figures. But the market is volatile, especially recently: a few years ago, the dollar tanked, and now the yen is tanking. It’s totally unpredictable and US-based toy importers are not doing so well. So, what’s a store based here to do? Make their own stuff, obviously! Which is exactly what Yes Anime has done. They teamed up with Shounen Jump and picked the licenses that many of us cut our anime teeth on: Bleach, Death Note, Naruto, Tiger & Bunny. And made the Trexi line, which is kind of like Funko’s Pop line. With weird hands. They also have a 1/6 scale line of super-detailed action figures with the… Harry Potter cast. Which is not anime but is, you know, equally nerdy. Also in appearance: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! And Steve McQueen. Kind of an eclectic selection there, Yes Anime. [Thanks to the amazing Anne Mortensen-Agnew for providing us with these images! <3]

  • Of course our main focus for Kotobukiya was on all the Bishoujos they brought to SDCC, but they had more than that! A lot more. Given that it’s San Diego COMIC Con, there were (of coure), a lot of comic goodies, including the impressive Hulk vs Hulkbuster statue that we first saw at Toy Fair. They also had statues ranging from Arkham Knight, Batman, Black Panther, and Iron Man to their newest ArtFX+ line which focuses on the villains. First up is a rather crazy-looking Lex Luthor. As opposed to non-crazy Lex? Haha. There was also a handful of non-comic-based merch. Their popular franchises like Halo and Alien popped up, along with a few anime lines like Aldnoah.Zero and Tokyo Ghoul. Check them out and more in the gallery! • Sadly, Plastikitty was not able to get to San Diego Comic Con this year. Well, not sadly for our wallets. Very happily for our wallets. But for our event coverage? Pretty sad. Thankfully, we had some awesome help so we could still bring all our lovely readers shots of the figures at SDCC! Because as we know, Kotobukiya brought basically every Bishoujou they’d had up their sleeve for the past six months. Tali, Spider Gwen, Lady Deadpool, Poison, Harley Quinn v 2, Raven, Zatanna? All here! And, of course, you can check them out in the gallery. We got an especially close look at Poison, who I think there was the most hype about. I mean, given the long wait, that’s to be expected! And (of course) reviews are mixed. Is she too sexy? Is she not sexy enough? Depends on who you ask. Personally, I’m… not sure. I love her face, hair & pose, but I’m not sold on the hips. As for the rest of the Bishoujos? I’m particularly enamored with Lady Deadpool! • Kotobukiya teased that they’d have their painted Poison at San Diego Comic Con, and while she didn’t show up in their official photos she is indeed at the event! Since the art reveal my hopes were pretty high, though I know with Poison there’s a REALLY fine line between great and too tacky, so I tried not to get too excited. She’s sculpted and painted and… well, honestly, it’s kind of hard to tell what exactly her face looks like from this angle. I think the body sculpt came out great (I mean, it’s definitely tacky… but it’s Poison we’re talking about) and her hair looks amazing. The face looks good in the grey sculpt, though, so I’m hoping she’ll look good on a shelf. [via Itakon & Kotobukiya]

  • Did you think Kotobukiya was done with the SDCC Bishoujo announcements? Yeah, so did I. I mean, there were a LOT. We’ll see some things sculpted tomorrow (or rather, this morning), but another totally new reveal? No way, I thought, and headed to bed! But I’m just starting to crack into Small Favor and bam, another one! Will the madness never end?! Anyway, this time it’s a Marvel Bishoujo, and it’s…. Spider Gwen! In case the title and header image didn’t give it away. I’m actually really interested to see how this comes out: maybe we’ll get a crazy pose like their Spider-Man statue? Hopefully she’ll look good next to Spider-Woman! [via Koto’s Facebook]

  • There have been a couple girls in the Bishoujo line who got second versions. Most of them, like Psylocke and Black Widow, are redone versions of much older Bishoujos, back when the line was 1/8 scale. Basically, they’re much-needed updates if you want all your girls the same height. But it was inevitable that we’d get some redos based on popularity, and it’s finally happening! With Harley Quinn, surprise surprise. Given the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, this probably is to be expected. And as much as I like the first one, I’ll be happy with a second–as long as it’s not one of her Suicide Squad outfits. Please, Shunya. No. [via Koto’s Facebook]

  • Well, this is certainly a surprise! We all expected a new Tekken announcement at SDCC, but did any of us think it would be… Lucky Chloe? I mean, she’s not one of the hyper-popular girls. But she’s a pink mecha catgirl with twintails. SHE’S FRIGGIN ADORABLE. I want her so bad and I don’t even know anything about her. [via Koto’s Facebook]

  • Well, it’s been a long time coming. I think people wanted a Bishoujo of Tali even more than one of FemShep or Liara: at least that’s what it seems like from fan opinion! She was announced finally in October, and we got a silhouette tease at Winter WonFest, but we’ve all been patiently waiting for the full art reveal. And… it looks like Tali! With her face covered, it’s hard to get a huge amount of Shunya influence. Though I’ll be honest, I REALLY did not want a sexed-up Tali, so this art is definitely making me happy! I wonder if she’ll be crouched over or just tilting forward a little in the actual sculpt? [UPDATE] We have a pic of her (painted!!) sculpt from Itakon. I love her little alien toes. • Since the very inception of the Street Fighter Bishoujo line, fans have been clamoring for Ibuki. It seemed like an obvious choice for the line, but I think a lot of more… aesthetically appealing (*cough*lessclothed*cough*) characters took precedence. But now, it’s finally happening! Bishoujo Ibuki has been announced, and we already know from the outline that she’ll be in an action-oriented pose. [via Koto’s Facebook]

  • Lady Deadpool has probably been the Bishoujo in the works for the longest. I mean, her announcement was over three years ago! We got her art at Winter Wonder Festival, so I think we were all expecting an update at SDCC. Well we got one, but it’s not the sculpt! Instead we are getting her unmasked art. We knew from the start that we’d have a masked and unmasked head, so this isn’t a big shock. What is shocking is how much I really don’t like the face/head art. She looks so… hyper-cheerful. And I knew it wasn’t going to happen, but I was kind of hoping for all the weird scars. But hey, I love her masked head, so it’s all good! [UPDATE] Her sculpt is out on display! Thankfully it is the masked version, she looks so good. Image via Itakon! [via Koto’s Facebook]
