Senran Kagura Archive

I was really uninpressed but Alter’s Summer WonFest 2013 offerings, but it seems like that’s because they were saving all the good stuff for MegaHobby Autumn 2013! We got a veritable deluge of figures: swimsuit versions of Charlotte & Cecilia, Akane Isshiki from Vividred Operation, two Strike Witches, a gorgeous new Sora Kasugano, Asuka from Senran Kagura, and The Muse of Range Murata. Of course they had even more great figures, but we’ll be taking a look at the rest a bit later!
There was a whole lot to feast your eyes upon, but at the time we (obviously) only had event photography. Quick, “oh my god look at this figure!” event photography. But some time has passed, which means it’s time to sit back, relax, and browse some higher quality galleries of these gorgeous ladies. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but my money’s on Sora all the way. I mean…. that dress. She’s perfect!

Alter sure is fond of girls tonight named Asuka, aren’t they? First Eva Q version Asuka, now this one! Of course they’re not the same character: one pilots a giant living robot, the other, um… fights with her boobs or something! To me at least Asuka is the most dull of the Senran Kagura girls, with a pretty boring outfit so I’ve never been interested in her figures but Alter’s pulled out a pretty cute rendition of her. It’s funny they’ve kept her hidden for so long, since she is both sculpted and painted now–and I can’t help but wonder if they’ll do any more of the girls. I’d kind of kill for an Alter Yagyu or Katsuragi.

Senran Kagura has certainly proved its popularity in the figure world, but the focus seems to be almost entirely on the core five girls (aside from that one Figuarts Zero we never saw again… and the hideous A+ figures we don’t speak of). Of course eventually companies will run out of pose ideas for Asuka, Hibari, Katsuragi, Ikaruga and Yagyu… and it seems like that day has finally come!
To no one’s surprise it’s CM’s Corporation who is now working on the extended cast, because they blew through the first few girls at a rapid pace (with awful results). But Hikage here looks pretty great, aside from the fact that I kind of hate her outfit. Button your pants, girl! You can’t fight bad guys with your zipper down!

Literally overnight, Toy’s Works & Chara-Ani (two companies that always work together, which is a tad confusing) somehow went from small manufacturers to kind of big players because they announced a MASSIVE amount of figures. Seriously, it’s staggering, so let’s dive right in. We’ll start with the old: their Asuna is painted and I have to say I’m impressed! There will also be a second Asuna, based on the art of her lying on the bed. They’re also doing a recolor of their Konomi Yuzuhara, and their next ToHeart 2 girl will be Tamaki in a rather compromizing position. Lastly, their Maken-Ki duo will be geting recolors (re-outfits?).
Onto the new: they are doing the whole cast of Girls und Panzer in camo pajamas, we’re getting Kuroneko and Kirino in pretty adorable almost pjs, Akane Isshiki will be getting a totally cute toothbrushing-figure (what is it with Japan and girls brushing their teeth), they’re taking on Kunou (sculpted) and Koneko Toujou (art) from Highschool DxD, they’ll be doing Maou based on some pretty cute art and Chiho Sasaki to go with her, they have a figure of Kuroki Shirai sculpted, and out of nowhere there’s a lovely reading lady from the Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou line.
Last but not least, they’re working on Senran Kagura (like every company under the sun). Asuka and Ikaruga are sculpted, and we have announcements for Katsuragi and Yumi. FINALLY, a Yumi!

Holy crap more pixellated teasers someone call an ambulance I’m gonna have a heart attack from all this excitement. Hey autocorrect no I do not mean tessellated I mean pixellated leave me alone! I’m talking to my computer, that’s how boring I find CM’s Corporation’s Wonder Festival teasers. Probably because they broke my heart with their Senran Kagura line: I was so excited for a set of all the girls, and then… they all sucked. Okay, Yagyu is passable, but the Hibari is so terrible I could cry. It looks like the last one in the line, Asuka, will be painted at this upcoming WonFest. Since we don’t have any good figures of her yet I am almost holding out hope but CM’s figures seems to almost universally suck. However, their maid Nyaruko was so friggin cute I could die so maybe, just maybe, Asuka won’t suck.
They’ve also painted their Mashiro Shiina and have two new figures teased: Yuu Morisawa from Mahou no Tenshi Creamy Mami and Tsukiko Tsutsukakushi from Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. I don’t think any figure of her is going to top the Koto one, but I guess they’re going to try!

We tend to focus on PVC coverage during Wonder Festival because, well… those are the things most of us can buy! But really, there are about ten times as many garage kits at the event as pre-painted PVC. Actually… that might be underestimating it, the garage kit area is HUGE!
We’ve already shown you some of the kits that will be at the event like Purple Heart, Yagyuu Toshiyuki’s Marisa Kirisame, an acrobatic Saber Bride, chibi Saber Lily, Toda Satoshi’s terrifying Passionlip, and Coneckers’ Momiji. But of course there are a ton more, and we’ve got some really lovely kits this time around. My personal favorites are Vispo’s astonishing Jeanne d’Arc & her horse–though Jeanne seems very popular this WonFest!–, the bathing suit IDOLM@STER trio, the gory Labrys, and Atelier Hiro’s punk rock Miku Hatsune. And my oh my do we have a lot of Mikus. Chec them all out (and plenty more) in the gallery!

Wave usually puts up their Beach Queens for order in sets of two, but it seems like they’re upping the ante this time with three new ladies! And surprisingly, only one of them was previously announced: Himawari Shinomiya from Vivdred Operation. I am trying (successfully!) to cut down on Beach Queen purchases, so while Himawari is cute the perfectly spherical boobs make her an instant pass.
Then we have two new announcements! The first is the adorable loli Chiwa Harusaki from Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru. She’s cute but something seems… missing? I think the body proportions are a little odd and she could definitely benefit from more shading. The third girl, Hibari from Senran Kagura, is totally going to make me break my BQ no-buy because OH GOD SO CUTE SO PINK NEED HER! I love the pose, and she seems a lot more lively than most Beach Queens. All 3 are going up for order tonight, and I really hope they make more Senran Kagura girls.

Vertex has been teasing their lovely Mitsuru from Persona 3 (in her Persona 4 Arena garb, just to make it extra confusing) for some time now, and I’ve been chomping at the bit to get my hands on this version of one of my all-time favorite characters. Finally, we are getting a full preview–and she looks amazing! I’ve been a big fan of Vertex since their impressive Asuka, and Mitsuru doesn’t disappoint, she looks flawless in almost every way. Except, perhaps, for the extra eye accessory, but you don’t have to put that on so let’s just pretend it doesn’t exist. Her coat is also removable, which is pretty damn cool and a feature I wasn’t expecting! But she won’t come cheap–Mitsuru retails for ¥12000, which you may be thinking is a lot for a 1/7 scale figure but GSC charges more for their 1/8 ladies so really, I am more than willing to fork over the cash for her.
There’s another preview as well, their Ikaruga from Senran Kagura! My opinion on her hasn’t really changed from when we first saw her. The paint is great and I like the movement and the pose, but the floating boobs are just a huge turnoff. I wish they’d made her more realisitically reacting to gravity and she’d be a buy, but for right now even at her price of ¥8,800 this is a pass. They are both listed as August releases but I have a sneaking suspicion that will change once they go up for order.

Griffon is usually the only PVC company to show up to Treasure Festa, and they take advantage of it with a wide range of merchandise on display. This time around they’ve changed things up a bit though: their bread and butter franchise, Touhou Project, was mysteriously missing! Well, not missing: the derpy 1/10 figures were on display and Rumia is painted… though the less I say about her the better.
It seems like they are going back to their roots–scantily clad ladies! Many of the Wonder Festival announcements are sculpted, including Ikaruga (who is also painted) and Katsura Kotohana. Surprisingly, the just-announced Sasami Tsukuyomi is there as well, and not quite as cute as I had hoped. As for new announcements, we have quite a few–they’re doing Katsumi Liqueur and Kiddy Phenil from Silent Mobius and are going back to Ikkitousen with another Ryofu Housen. But most importantly, after their first sub-par Asuna they are taking her on again in her elf costume and this time she is looking a hell of a lot better!

There are a massive amount of figure-related events in Japan. Usually we cover the big ones that involve PVC: Wonder Festival, Comiket, MegaHobby, Tamashii Nations, et cetera. But of course the garage kit community probably puts out ten times as much as the PVC world, they are just a lot harder to get! The most recent gk event will be Treasure Festa in Ariake 9, which takes place on May 5th–yes, only a few days away!
So today we’re bringing you a roundup of some of the best kits that will be at the event, complete with the circle’s name in case you are lucky enough to be at the event and have the money and speed to snag one. My favorites are the adorable Yagyu from Senran Kagura and Atelier Hiro’s graceful Miku, but there’s a whole lot more–even a Kaito and an awesome Shin Megami kit with both Jack Frost and Pyro Jack! Check them all out after the jump.
