A new year means new toys! And Javier Jiménez, creator of Wananeko and Baby Wananeko, is starting 2017 off on a very good note for those of us who like both cats and toys. Which is basically all of humanity, right?
This Sunday, a super-limited run of 5 hand-painted Baby Wananekos will go up in the StickUp Monsters store. Not only are these guys adorable, but by buying one you help support an awesome cause! All proceeds will go to Maullidos Invisibles, a cat welfare organization in Granada. So you get a toy kitty and help out real-life strays and sick cats! All for a mere $35. What could be better?

One of my very first PVC purchases years and years ago was Wave’s hard-to-get Teddie, who even back then was a challenge to find (especially the rare variants!). But since then Persona 4‘s popularity in the figure world has skyrocketed to proportions I never would have guessed. So of course we got lots more Teddie figures! This one is really riding on the tail end of P4‘s success (or on hype for Persona 5, perhaps?) but of course I’m going to get it. IT’S TEDDIE.
I was kind of bummed by the initial plain art, but he looked great at Anime Japan and of course he looks great in the promotional shots! It’s definitely on the simpler end of things, but the price (¥5,800) reflects that. He’s actually pretty large, 7 inches tall, so it’s a bargain! Of course Aniplex figures are always exclusives, but they do ship overseas so he won’t break the bank… too much.

Oh look, another event in Japan! This one isn’t actually centered around figures like MegaHobby or WonFest–it’s about anime! And that’s where 80% of figures come from, so of course a few showed up. We’ll start off with Aniplex who brought quite a few new things. The first in importance (to me) is the sculpted Teddie–he looks so great! And huge. Then we’ve got painted versions of the maiko Sayaka & Kyoko, who took a while but they definitely look like they were worth it.
Then there’s the surprise announcement: Shiki Ryougi! Her pose looks really great and dynamic, but of course Aniplex = expensive. They also had a few up-for-order figures out and about, so check them all out in the gallery.

I’m sure you all remember Javier Jimenez’s Wananeko, Plastikitty’s current toy cat crush. As the funding campaign to get this little guy in soft vinyl form has gone on some awesome stretch goals have been added, like a Baby Wananeko soft vinyl figure and clear guts for the large size! Now there’s only one day left to go, and there are still lots of bonus goodies to be had.
The final figure-based stretch goal is a micro Wananeko! At only 2.5″ tall, this little beast will probably still wreak havoc on your figure collection. I mean, it’s a cat. It’s what they do. And as an added bonus, once $12,500 is reached every single backer who got a Wananeko (of any size!) will receive 5 free stickers. Man, that’s like my two weaknesses. CATS AND STICKERS. So go hurry and get one before time runs out!

You probably remember Javier Jimenez’ recent IndieGoGo project to get his awesome Wananeko figure in soft vinyl format. Well, the part I was most excited about was the addition of a Baby Wananeko in resin! I mean, kittens guys. I just love kittens so much. The project got funded amazingly fast, so a stretch goal was added: for $2,000 over the original goal, a sofubi Baby Wananeko would be manufactured too!
Well, as you might have guessed from the title, it’s happened already. Yup, there are 21 days left to go and we’ve already had the original and stretch goal funded. I wonder if Jimenez has any other tricks up his sleeve?! If you want a Baby Wananeko, all of the original funding levels that include a sofubi Wananeko will include a bonus matching Baby Wananeko. Want something a little more special? There are ten $200 slots open that get you a custom set: one full size and one baby Wananeko, customized to your specific instructions! So go get one here.

It’s no secret that here at Plastikitty, we love cats. Real cats, stuffed cats, toy cats. If it’s a cat, I’m gonna buy it. One of our recent favorite cat figures has been Javier Jimenez’ Wananeko, a yokai who can shapeshift parts of his body into weaponry and also is so freaking cute. However, past Wananeko releases have been resin and fairly limited, so like most resin toys it’s hard to dive into right away for newbies.
But worry no more, Wananeko fans! There is now an IndieGoGo for… you guessed it, a soft vinyl version of this badass kitty. And if there’s one thing I like more than cat toys it’s sofubi cat toys, so this is great news! The rewards range from stickers to crazy customs, and there will be 3 colorways to start off: DIY, original, and a clear pink that’s exclusive to IndieGoGo.
But that’s not all. You may notice that our header is not of Wananeko. Or is it?! It’s BABY WANANEKO. This resin piece is probably the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, and there are four different colorways you can get only through the IndieGoGo: Original, Calico, Nightshade and Ghost. I love that the eye shape changes so he goes from worried to angry. AHH, it’s so cute. Do you want one? You know you do. Head on over to IndieGoGo and show your support.

Are you ready for the most un-BEAR-ably cute booth at Wonder Festival? Because it has that announced Teddie, who has already stolen my heart. I love him so very very much and he will be mine. There was some other stuff too, I guess, like towel Mami and the Maiko versions of Sayaka & Kyoko.
Wedding Saber made her painted appearance, but while I really love wedding figures usually this just isn’t doing it for me. And last but not least is cancer girl Kaori Miyazono from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. This figure’s sculpt is just BEARLY hanging in there! But for real, that face is a tragedy.

Teddie from Persona 4 might be the most divisive character in the MegaTen series (though really, that “honor” should go to Ken THE WORST OF ALL CHARACTERS), but he sure has got a lot of merchandise! More than any other cast member, since Wave was making figures of him back in 2009 and he’s gotten a ton of plushes. And as a member of Team Teddie, I’m excited for a new one on the horizon!
This version will be manufactured by Aniplex, and will be soft vinyl (not PVC). So, he’ll be squishy! Just like real life. He’s also rather larger than the Teddies we’ve gotten in the past, clocking in at just under 7 inches. Plus, moveable limbs! Let’s just hope he’s not an exclusive.

Remember when I used to get all excited about new Soniko releases? Well, times are a-changing. I let out a long, sad sigh when I saw the pictures for this because at this point it’s like oh my god how many figures of her in a bikini can they put out before I go insane? It’s a battle of wills. Me vs. Tsuji Santa. Who will win?!
This is the X-Plus figure of her that we got a preview of in early May, and the one good thing I can say about it is that at least she’s more covered here than usual. She’s also soft vinyl and a whopping 16.8 inches tall, so prepare some serious shelf space if you want to add this to your collection!

Every time a new Animal Crossing game comes out, it seems like the entire internet is enthralled by it. Or at least, the entire internet of people I know. So of course I am a bit saddened that the franchise doesn’t have a ton of merchandise: sure, there’s the Shizue/Isabelle Nendoroid and many plushes, but I want more!
Thankfully, more toys are on the horizon. Jesnet is making soft vinyl figures of Shizue, K.K Slider, Tom Nook, and Reese. You can get them individually (~¥1,300) or in two-packs (¥2,400) on AmiAmi right now with an August release. Of course I’ve ordered all four and am hoping we get some more!
