Spike Spiegel Archive

  • Cowboy Bebop is an anime classic, but it gets sadly little figure attention. Probably because, you know, it’s almost 20 years old. We have had a spurt of figure announcements from it recently though, like Kotobukiya’s lovely Spike! And First 4 Figures told us ages ago we’d be getting some statues from them, and finally here they are. Or here the rough 3D sculpts are for Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, and Jet Black. They don’t look… amazing, but usually First 4’s sculpts are pretty polished so I assume this is just a teaser. They have also announced that Ed will be joining the line too! Hopefully with Ein, right? Because I need a 1/4 scale corgi in my life. [via First 4’s Facebook]

  • While Kotobukiya’s Toy Fair booth is mostly focused on US-centric licenses like comic and movie toys (the new anime reveals are saved for Wonder Festival), they always bring a few on over for us. And, unsurprisingly, they’re mostly from shows that are popular here like Cowboy Bebop, Black Butler, Code Geass, and Cardcaptor Sakura. My favorite, though, was the gorgeous Charlotta from Granblue Fantasy. She’s so detailed but so tiny and cute! And the ruffles. So many of my favorite things.

  • We saw what Good Smile Company & co and Vertex brought to Miyazawa Model, but of course a few others showed up as well! Though it seems like everyone else was limited to one or two new figures up their sleeves. Kotobukiya had just a handful of new stuff: Wilhelmina Braunschweig Ingenohl Friedeburg (why with this naming) from High School Fleet, aka “that KanColle ripoff” and…. Spike is finally painted! Revolve didn’t have much, but they did have announcements for Rem & Ram from Re:Zero. Aoshima had a lovely Izetta from Shuumatsu no Izetta on display, and Medicom had out their Gary/Blue/whatever you want to call him. Pulchra announced two new Vocaloids: Yukari Yuzuki and… a different figure of Yukari. And let’s not forget about the wacky EVA Unit-01 action figure on display! [via amiami & hobby_maniax]

  • Volks has recently hopped on the male Dollfie train, though let’s be honest: their first offering looked pretty much identical to their girl dolls. I’ve been dreaming of a true anime-style male doll for years and it seems like my dreams might finally be coming true–but not because of Volks. Danny Choo’s beautiful SmartDoll lineup will be adding a few boys to the mix, and he’s got some exciting licenses in the lineup. First off we have Cowboy Bebop‘s Spike Spiegel, who has yet to be revealed… but based on the blurry photo, he is 100% complete! Who would have ever thought we’d have a Spike doll? Times are changing. Then there’s Lelouch from Code Geass, who I am insanely excited for since he’s my favorite male anime character (well, him and the cat teacher from Princess Tutu, but we all know he’s not getting a doll). There are also some very heavy hints that Suzaku might be joining him too… [via Danny Choo]

  • Back at Summer WonFest we finally got our first look at the sculpt for Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop in Kotobukiya’s ArtFX J line and today, at NYCC, we got some new information on him! For starters, it seems like his entire head has been re-sculpted and large chunks of his outfit have been refined as well since we last saw him. Also of note, if you order through the KotoUS site you’ll get basically an entire second way to display Spike sans coat and with a second arm holding a cigarette up. I know these pictures don’t really do him justice, but honestly, this is basically the anime figure that everyone has been waiting for since the 90s and early 00s when it was still called Japanimation. Kotobukiya have created the perfect figure here and I honestly can’t wait any longer to see him painted (and here’s hoping for a second alternate colorway in a hyper stylized cover art version as well).

  • Back at Winter WonFest we showed you that Kotobukiya would be taking on Cowboy Bebop in their ArtFX J line and now we’ve got our first look at the sculpt for Spike Spiegel! The mood, the tone, the detail, literally everything about this figure is perfect. I love the addition of the wall and the leaning pose that feels like it came right out of a frame of the show. The slight flow of the trench coat, the perfectly listless face, I could go on and on, but this figure is seriously sheer perfection. Now give me the other 3 main characters and I can die a happy figure collector. [via AmiAmi’s Twitter]

  • Welp, that’s it people. WonFest is won and over. Just don’t even bother showing off all your ship gals and idols because Kotobukiya just went and made the one announcement people have been waiting for forever that no one ever thought would happen: Cowboy Bebop ArtFX J figures are coming! Starting with Spike Spiegel we’ll be getting that one figure that everyone’s been lusting over for over 15 years now. I honestly could not be happier right now and will be counting down the days until he shows up at my doorstep for our eventual review. [via 2chan]
