Square-Enix Archive

  • We went from very little Halo merchandise from PVC manufacturers to… quite a bit, in a short amount of time. But Square-Enix is a veteran in this field. If we went to a convention in the past few years, chances are there were some Halo Play Arts there. Case in point: 2013, 2012, 2011. And now, 2014! This year they only had one on display, an Anniversary Edition of Master Chief in his Halo 2 getup. Cause, you know, his outfits just change so very much between installments.

  • So were you not satisfied by the Final Fantasy x DC mashup at Square-Enix’s booth this year? Do you want even more strange, nonsensical variants of comic characters? Perhaps Spider-Man in a suit so overly-defined he looks like a robot. Or an Iron Man with a super slimmed down mask that kind of looks like a skull. Well then man oh man will you be satisfied when you hit the jump and check out what oddities S-E has for you this time around.

  • In theory, having Nomura Tetsuya redesign the DC characters sounds like a good idea. I mean… he makes some nice art, right? Well, it seems someone misheard and thought the idea was “pretend the DC characters are silly tech-based summons like in FFXIII.” I giggled at the original DC Universe Variant Play Arts, I was baffled by the art for the Batman in this line, and the final result is… um… interesting? Very strange? Confusing on a multitude of levels? Check out the gallery for Bats and Cats in all their FF-inspired glory.

  • Were you thinking to yourself “haha, why is Rorschach wearing a hat in this new figure” when you saw the header? Because that may or may not have been my reaction. However, it’s actually a skeleton dude! From Metal Gear Solid! To my defense, there actually is a Rorschach Play Arts. Square went from “like 2 different kinds of Play Arts” to “way too many franchises to keep track of” in such a short time.

  • Final Fantasy is the backbone of Square-Enix’s merchandise (would it kill them to do some Dragon Quest Play Arts goodness), so of course they had lots from the venerable series on display at NYCC. My favorite is, of course, the fat Chocobo plush (which yes I have on order) and the insanely huge Bahamut Play Arts Of course they had the recent Final Fantasy X figures out as well, along with the usual Tonberry and Moogle goodies. Because we all know you actually can never have enough Tonberry in your life.

  • There has been a lot of buzz in the past few days about the Miku Hatsune Play Arts Kai. Mainly… not so positive buzz. Because, to be honest, in most pictures she looked downright weird. But I decided to reserve judgment until I saw her in person. And I have to admit that… I like her! Play Arts really aren’t my thing and (prepare yourselves for this confession) I’m not even a huge fan of Nomura Tetsuya’s original art, but I love the almost doll-like vibe going on here. And the clear hair! I might… actually buy a Play Arts… gasp!

  • I still find it impossibly strange that Square-Enix has started producing PVC figures, but picks the most obscure shit as their sources. I mean… Square-Enix has some big titles that they could milk to death on the PVC market. Like.. Final Fantasy… but they don’t! I remember being shocked at the announcement of these three figures, especially since one of them is from the Bravely Default sequel when the first one was so popular but they’re not making figures from it. What. Anyway, we can see that the quality of the painted pieces isn’t that good. Especially Teo from Lord of Vermillion, but Magnolia from Bravely Second isn’t looking that great either. Not enough shading! However, as you can see from the sculpt of Kan’u from Sankokushi Rumble, these pieces really do have potential. It’s a shame. [via Akibahobby]

  • You know, Square-Enix is always pumping out a ton of Final Fantasy merchandise but it always seems to be from VII, X, IV, VI, or that random fighting one. Never from my precious baby because people don’t like it and they have terrible taste while I sob in the corner over no Fran merchandise. But finally dark days are over. I’ve been waiting for this moment, and it is HERE. JUST LOOK. FRAN PLAY-ARTS. I’M GONNA DIE HAPPY. And there was some other stuff too like Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII, and Barret or whatever. I mean, Red XIII is my home(liondog) and it’s cool to see Barret getting some representation but WHATEVER FRAN I’M JUST GONNA DANCE AROUND MY APARTMENT ALL DAY [via Jeff Saylor]

  • When you looked at the header did you think “is that some kind of… weird bondage outfit with like built in suspension capability?” I wouldn’t blame you. Because it looks weird as shit. But no, it’s the goddamn Batman! Designed by Tetsuya Nomura of Final Fantasy fame. Why, you ask? Because Square-Enix has two Play Arts lines that sell well: Final Fantasy and DC. Because they have brains that apparently work in alien ways they thought it’d be TOTALLY GREAT to combine the two into this abomination. It looks like Kirby ate Batman and then Bahamut and exploded. Just… why. [via Siliconera]

  • I guess Square-Enix is really dedicated to the whole “we’re making scaled figures now” thing, huh? Which could be very good or very bad, depending on price and quality. First there was Nimue, and now we are getting three announcements! Kan’u from Sankokushi Rumble, Magnolia from Bravely Second, and Teo from Lord of Vermillion. How annoyed am I that they are making figures from Bravely Second but we’re not getting any from Bravely Default? Or you know… FINAL FANTASY X? No words, Square-Enix. NO FREAKING WORDS. Maybe… make figures… of characters… we want to buy. What a mind-blowing concept! [via AmiAmi’s Twitter]
