Super Soniko Archive

Did you think that Griffon Enterprises had gone the way of the dinosaurs (and Taki Corp)? So did everyone else. It’s been ages since they actually did anything, and many of their in-production figures (like the damn goldfish action figure I had on order for 2 years!!) were simply cancelled or left in limbo. But apparently they were just hibernating, because they’re back with totally new branding!
They showed off two new lines, which really just seems like a way of re-branding their image. The first, Bishojo Tairiku, is their art-based 18+ line (kind of like what Native and AlphaMax does), featuring art by Kizuki Aruchu, Koutaro, Watanabe Yoshihiro, and more! The second, Grand Toys, features more traditional licenses like Cutie Honey, Super Sonico, Highschool DxD, and Silent Möbius. They’ve also revived a few Date A Live and Rozen Maiden figures I thought were long gone! I know Griffon has been a spotty company but they’ve made quite a few very nice figures, so I hope this works out well for them.

I was pretty excited when we heard about Good Smile Company’s Anniversary Sonico, which features an elaborately sculpted wedding outfit. So when I heard they’d be doing another one, my hopes got up. And… they probably shouldn’t have.
Like many of the Sonico figures that have come out recently, this is just… it’s tacky, guys. I love Sonico but it’s literally a strip of leather around her boobs. And they’re so unrealistically sized and shaped. Remember when sculptors tried to give Sonico a softer, more realistic appearance? That’s going to be a hell of a struggle for this one.

It’s apparently Sonico’s 10th anniversary! And it seems like it was only yesterday that companies started producing figures of her like there was no tomorrow. It’s been years (her first figure was in 2009!), but we still get Sonicos like clockwork: in fact there have been quite a few reveals in the last few days. But none of them will top this new one from Good Smile Company, featuring a wedding Sonico!
I really love wedding figures, sadly they are rare (and usually expensive). But for this one? Yeah, I’ll shell out a lot. We rarely get figures of her this elaborately sculpted with fancy bases and everything, she looks so beautiful! Though it does make me wonder about their other, still unpainted figure of her…

Did you notice a distinct lack of Sonico at this Wonder Festival? We really only had one or two, and she used to absolutely dominate the figure scene. I’m not really sure who the next eye candy girl is, but sadly my pink-haired cutie seems to be on the decline. But fear not, Pulchra is here with a super cute sweater Sonico! And also some other stuff, like Dagashi Kashi figures, Yuuki Mikan from To LOVEru, and a super amazing Rider from Fate/Grand Order. For real now, how many F/GO figures does any human need. Seems like literally every company had at least one.

Native used to be the undisputed king of NSFW figures. But recently they started putting out more and more figures with lower quality (or at least attention to detail), and AlphaMax started overtaking the ecchi market. Recently, though, I think Native has tried to return to its roots: sure, they have a LOT of stuff at this Wonder Festival, but a lot of them have a classic Native feel.
We’ve got art from all the faves (and some new faces as well): Tony Taka, Raita, Saito Masatsugu, ReDrop, Tsuji Santa, Nagaoka Kenzou, abec, Ishikei, Pyon-Kti, Parsley, Yuuki Hagure. And while it’s a nice lineup, I’m kind of disappointed that 1) no boys and 2) my goddamn techno nurse is STILL MISSING. Where is she, Native?!

Native just recently started doing Wonder Festival teasers, but this year it’s of course more of the same. A rather vague collection of limbs, many of which are things like “feet” or “the corner of a base.” They’re always kind of hard to pinpoint, because Native doesn’t (usually) do recognizable characters and it’s very hard to guess which artists is which based on, you know, a hand. But many of these are clearly based on some of the past art they’ve shown off, like Yuuki Hagure’s idol girl or their secretary Sonico.

Have you ever felt incredibly conflicted by a figure? You like almost every aspect: in fact, you’re kind of in love. But there’s just one thing about it that makes you go “WHY FIGURE GODS WHY.” That’s me and Max Factory’s Racing Queen Sonico.
So many aspects of her are perfect. The flowing twintails, the soft pastel colors, the sleek racing outfit, the cute pose, the body sculpt, the face… and of course the butt. Have you ever seen such a perfect butt? It’s the greatest. But guys, her boobs. It’s killing me. Just strangely balloon-shaped but I don’t even care because the rest of her is perfect. Her retail price of ¥13,800 is also a little hard to stomach, but her January release certainly gives us time to save up.

Figures of Sonico are a dime a dozen, but it’s honestly hard to find a really nice, well-sculpted and pretty figure of her. Most of them are, shall we say, less presentable. Not the kind of figures you put on the coffee table for guests to check out. Or maybe you do, I don’t know your life!
So, of course, whenever a higher end company takes her on I get pretty excited. So of course I’ve been looking forward to Max Factory’s Race Queen take on her since the sculpt reveal! And she’s lived up to expectations… kind of. The paint is gorgeous, the sculpt is lovely, but you all know what my issue is going to be. Her breasts are perfect spheres, like they just strapped some balls to her chest. No bueno. But then again, it’s Sonico, what did I expect?

Sometimes I wonder if Tsuji Santa bases his Sonico illustrations on trips to a costume shop that specializes in “sexy” versions of things. Just walking the aisles, being all “well I already did sexy baker and sexy unicorn, let’s see what else is trendy right now? Oh, I know! Sexy nurse Sonico!” That was my thought when we first saw this figure, and the paint has basically confirmed it.
I mean, everything about this is hilarious. Her “nun dress” doesn’t even cover her ass, but the habit is close to the right length? They didn’t even put real crosses on her dress lest it offend anyone! Truly, FuRyu is a giver of wonderful gifts.

AlphaMax is definitely my favorite NSFW company. They always have a ton of great figures, and like half of them are Tony Taka. And everybody knows how I feel about that! They also make lots of more safe for work stuff, which was of course on display at Wonder Festival. There’s the totally flawless Sonico in the header, a surprise figure of Sora (so popular at this event!), and… Miku?
There was lots of “don’t display this in the living room” type stuff out as well. There’s the softer Tony Taka girls, and then some, uh, kind of out there stuff. Looks like Native’s toilet Tony Taka girl will have a friend!
