  • Sometimes I think Aniplex should just change their name to “We Make Fate/Stay Night Figures, The Company.” Because let’s be real, recently that’s all they’ve done. Thankfully, they are quite good at it: their painted Ishtar might be the most beautiful figure I’ve ever seen from the franchise. They also had a beautiful casual Saber from Heaven’s Feel, along with the announcement for a gorgeous dressy Jeanne d’Arc. You know, I love Jeanne, but I don’t have a single figure of her! Maybe this will be the one? There were, of course, a handful of non-Fate figures out like their lovely and complex Asuna! Check them all out and more in the gallery below. [via moeyo]

  • Ah, MegaHobby Expo, Wonder Festival’s little brother. Years ago the two rivaled each other in scale, but as time has passed MegaHobby has gotten smaller and smaller. Fewer companies, fewer figures. But there are always a few gems to be found! We’ll start the coverage with Alter, one of my favorite companies (though as you may know, they have recently fallen out of the “affordable” bracket and into the “look longingly from a distance” bracket for me). They had quite a few cuties out on display, including many updates to their Wonder Festival sculpts. Jeanne d’Arc definitely stole the show for me! The only brand-new reveal was Arie Nadja from Madou Monogatari who is so adorably retro it hurts. [via moeyo]

  • I remember the dark times when Good Smile Company didn’t come to US events. Thankfully those days are over, because their booth is usually the toy highlight of any convention! And they really brought it for NYCC this year with not one but two separate booth displays. They had a lot of brand-new goodies, like the Anniversary Miku (look at that hair!!), figma Genji, and the sculpt for the Breath of the Wild Guardian Nendoroid. It’s always nice to be able to see figures in person, it’s quite a different experience–for example, I wasn’t really sold on Marie Rose’s colors at all when the promotional shots came out, but I was totally won over when I finally got to see her. She might be coming to my pre-order list!

  • Asuna had a shining moment a few years ago as a figure It Girl. Everyone had figures of her, and while her popularity has definitely fallen off, we still get the occasional take on Asuna. This time around it’s Alter, who showed off their sculpt of her at Wonder Festival. As you’d expect from Alter, she looks lovely. But perhaps not as detailed as some of their newer offerings? Maybe she just needs a paint of coat, but right now I feel like something is lacking. The pose is nice, I love her hair sculpt, and the face is really on-model, but nothing about this really wows me. Kotobukiya’s version is still my favorite of her. [via Dengeki]

  • Prize figures have always been appealing: you get a cheap version of a popular character, often in an outfit that we’d never see in scales. Plus, the quality gets better and better on them every year. With rising scaled figure prices and a worsening exchange rate, prize figures are looking better than ever, so it’s a good thing the upcoming lineup of them seems amazing! We have all the regulars out and about: Evangelion, Kantai Collection, Sword Art Online, Fate/Grand Order, Bakemonogatari, Miku, Lupin, and many many more. The noodle topper ones really seem to be taking the prize world by storm: I have a few and can vouch for how amazingly fun they are to display all sorts of odd ways. Any of them catch your eye? • I don’t know about you guys, but I just love when existing companies suddenly change their name/merge into another company. It’s not at all confusing and annoying. Like you may peruse this gallery and think “wait, that Kamina is Myethos! Celestia Ludenberck from Danganronpa is Myethos!” Well not anymore! Emontoys is “distributing” for them, but they also seem to be making quite a few figures of their own. Life is a mystery. They had a ton of announcements out, like a super cute China Dress Sonico, Undine ver Asuna, basically the whole cast of Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?? in various outfits, Aoba Suzukaze & Hifumi Takimoto from New Game!!, and so much more. But the most important thing? Definitely… SHIBA DRILL. These amazing and perfect gift-from-the-gods figures are literally just shibes with a variety of cones (traffic cones, ice cream cones, ect) on their heads. I’m in love, this is my new favorite thing. [via Dengeki]

  • Every Wonder Festival I think to myself “there can’t possibly be even more Nendoroids at the next WonFest.” Then, like magic, the Nendo Creep happens and we get at least 5-10 more than last year at the next event. It’s a plague, a really cute plastic plague. I think they’re multiplying on their own at this point. This year we have a bounty of Nendos, so let’s get into it. We’ve got Ariel, Astolfo, Mordred, Lina Inverse, Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui, Elf Yamada from Eromanga Sensei, Portal 2, KanColle, Meitantei Conan, Beatrice from Re;Zero, Wonder Woman, Overwatch, Mega Man, The Snack World, Sword Art Online, Fullmetal Alchemist, and so much more. They are all named in the gallery below for your viewing pleasure. And don’t forget we’ve already seen Nendos from Orange Rouge, Pokemon, Breath of the Wild, and Vocaloid! Which one are you looking forward to the most? [via the Wonderful Hobby Life For You site and King Junker’s Twitter]

  • Ah, Alter. Every year they get me so good! And it’s always with girls (or boys, from the Altair line) from franchises that I otherwise wouldn’t care about. Am I super obsessed with their Love Live and IM@S girls? Yes. Would I willingly watch either of those shows? No. I just love frilly dresses so very much. This year they have a great lineup. Shiki Ichinose from Cinderella Girls is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in my life, but the Love Live girls are also looking strong with a gorgeous Riko Sakurauchi. We have many, many FREE! boys and some other Altair announcements: Fate/Grand Order dudes! Merlin, Arthur Pendragon, and Edmon Dantes will all be getting scales. If you like the ladies, Alter will be doing Shielder too. They seem to be getting back to Strike Witches, which is nice, and we also have a surprise Chachamaru and Asuna. Check them all out below! • Are you ready, guys? Because Wonder Festival has begun! Actually, it’s about half an hour away, but companies love to make me miserable by tweeting out their own stuff before doors even open. Yayy. First up today is Aquamarine, who has a small but nicely curated collection of figures. I of course love the Caroline & Justine the most, so presh so mean. We’ve also got IDOLM@STER, Girls und Panzer, Galko-chan, Sakura Wars, an announcement from Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka??, and a surprise Tony Taka gal. [UPDATE] with an absolutely STUNNING Gwendolyn, along with Asuna and a few other cuties. [via Aquamarine’s Twitter]

  • For a few years now I have bemoaning the downfall of festival exclusives. It seems like companies never have anything big and fancy. Well, GSC is making me eat my words for this Summer Wonder Festival because they pulled out ALL the stops. First off, finally the return of scaled figures! And what an unexpected one. Max Factory is re-releasing their famous (and rare) Kasumi in 1/20 scale in the PLAMAX line. She’ll retail for ¥3,000. Kaiyodo will also have a new Wonda-chan for ¥9,800. We have quite a few Nendoroids. There’s the updated Reimu from Touhou Project (¥5,000) and a set of Asuna & Kirito O.S Versions (¥5,500 for the set). Sadly, these will not be available online and are only at Wonder Festival, Anime Expo, Japan Expo, CCG Expo, Shanghai ChinaJoy, and 2017 18th Comic Exhibition. Everything else will be available online right after the event, which is July 30th. As for regular Nendoroids, there’s a super cute Yuri Katsuki who will get a matching Vincent. Then we have the Nendoroid More Dress Up Wedding Elegant Version (what a mouthful) and the penguin face case which I really need in my life. Last, but not least, is WATER GUN SABER FIGMA. Amazing. Perfect. Wonderful. ¥5,500. For the first time in a while, I want the vast majority of these! [via whl4u]
