  • Ah, MegaHobby Expo, Wonder Festival’s little brother. Years ago the two rivaled each other in scale, but as time has passed MegaHobby has gotten smaller and smaller. Fewer companies, fewer figures. But there are always a few gems to be found! We’ll start the coverage with Alter, one of my favorite companies (though as you may know, they have recently fallen out of the “affordable” bracket and into the “look longingly from a distance” bracket for me). They had quite a few cuties out on display, including many updates to their Wonder Festival sculpts. Jeanne d’Arc definitely stole the show for me! The only brand-new reveal was Arie Nadja from Madou Monogatari who is so adorably retro it hurts. [via moeyo]

  • I have a confession, guys: I have never played a Tales of game. I love the designs, I own quite a few figures from the franchise, and I’m a huge fan of JRPGs so… what gives? Who knows, but I recently purchased Tales of Berseria and I’m excited to dive in. Once I finish some other games in my massive, frightening backlog. Seriously, it’s like 1,000+ hours of games in a scary tower. Timed perfectly with my purchase is Alter’s announcement that Eizen will be joining their Altair line. It’s always surprising to see a male character given figures before a female one, but that seems to be Alter’s MO with this series. It’s really refreshing, even though I do hope they make a Velvet (and Magilou please) down the line. [via Alter’s Blog]

  • Ahh, Alter. I have almost entirely sworn off buying figures, but when I am tempted it’s Alter at least 50% of the time. Something about them just really gets me in my figure-loving soul. And this event is no exception! While they only had a few goodies on hand, they were all absolutely gorgeous: from their stunning new Gwendolyn to the unbearably adorable Anzu Futaba, Alter still has it going on. Of course there were no big surprises. We have their usual go-to franchises: Fate (this time it’s a casual Lancer), IDOLM@STER, Love Live! (I never stop wanting these girls, sigh), Free!, and Tales of. Plachta from Atelier Sophie was definitely a nice surprise, as I didn’t expect her to turn out so beautifully based on the sculpt. [UPDATE] Added some lovely bonus pictures from Hobby Maniax [via Dengeki & AmiAmi]

  • As always, we have seen a lot from Kotobukiya at Toy Fair. Bishoujos Thor & Loki, Bishoujo Wonder Girl, Big Chap, Wolverine, Thanos, and then the overviews of their DC, Marvel, Bishoujo, and Star Wars toys. Phew! Can a booth even fit any more figures? The answer is always yes. Like usual, there weren’t a ton of PVC girls (and guys), but we had some! Like their gorgeous new Rage of Bahamut figures. And there were some other US-centric licenses too, like Halo, and the cutest damn Alien figure you’ll ever see. Look at his sassy pose! Amazing!

  • We’ve seen Kotobukiya’s amazing Spike announcement and their new Bishoujos already. And apparently they’re in a retro mood, because we have a lot of throwbacks here. Motoko from Ghost in the Shell, Sakura from Sakura Wars (YASS), the art for Pokemon Trainer Red, and a Cu-Poche of Rei (which means… Asuka is right behind)! Then there’s, you know, some modern stuff. Touken Ranbu, Tales of Berseria, IDOLM@STER: Million Live, Granblue Fantasy, 7th Dragon, and more. Check them all out below! [UPDATE] Added a few new figures to the gallery! • Alter used to be a company known for their big, flashy, ornate figures. And they still make some, but most of their releases are small and understated, but still gorgeously detailed. Like the IDOLM@STER and Love Live! lines, both of which of course made an appearance at Wonder Festival. Of course they’re my favorite Alter figs of the event. Just so perfect, so detailed, so CAT GIRLS. Okay, I’m lying, the surprise bunny Sora is probably my favorite. We have two Sabers: a lovely dress version of Saber Alter and a causal school Saber. Two of their Tales figures are painted: Edna and Julius Will Kresnik. Another boy is there too! Leonard Watch, who looks so cute. Purple Heart is finally sculpted along with Ema Yasuhara. Not enough? We have announcements for 3 (!!) more IM@S ladies: Anastasia, Minami Nitta, and Ranko Kanzaki. Plus Plachta from Atelier Sophie. [via amiami]

  • We’ve seen Alter’s Yuzuruha, but of course they had lots more at Megahobby Expo! I mean, they did just show off some stuff at that IDOLM@STER event but still, many goodies to be had. There were, of course, many of their Love Live! girls (seeing as how they are doing the whole cast): the Halloween Eri was there (which is technically Alpha x Omega), along with Maki Nishikino and Nozomi Tojou. We also have two Sabers: the previously announced Saber Alter is sculpted, and they’ve announced a new school uniform one. Personally, I don’t need any more Sabers, but man the dress on that Alter… The most exciting announcement (to me) is a dual figure of Charlotte and Laura from Infinite Stratos… as catgirls! It’s just too cute. We also have sculpts for Edna from Tales of Zestiria (who I seriously thought was another Saber), along with Julius Will Kresnik from Tales of Xillia 2. Gertrud Barkhorn, the last announced Strike Witch, is sculpted, and the rather risque Mea Kurosaki got a paint job along with Isuzu Sento. Check them all out below! [UPDATE] Added Yukina Himeragi from Strike the Blood [via whitenoize, prizeman_ufo & Hobby Search]

  • We’ve seen a lot from Kotobukiya this NYCC: DC, Marvel, Star Wars, some new announcements and a whole lot of up-close galleries. But Kotobukiya is primarily a PVC manufacturing company, so there were a lot of anime & manga related girls and guys on display as well! Their Hestia was obviously there (though without her alternate face), along with Ken Kaneki, the Black Butler line, the video game Bishoujos, Trigun, Halo, Alien… and their new Saber. I have to say, in press photos she really didn’t impress me (another standing Saber!) but in person? True love. The sculpt is so crisp, and I’m really tempted to place an order now.

  • Figure prices are skyrocketing, the yen is tanking, figure collectors are being driven out of the hobby. So you know what we need? More figure events! Clearly. That will solve things. So what’s this show? It’s not Wonder Festival, not MegaHobby, not CharaHobby… it’s Hobby Show! The most generically named figure event of all time. Of all time. KanColle was, unsurprisingly, the main focus. We had a LOT from Max Factory: Harbour Princess and Atago both showed up, though unpainted. Figmas of Fubuki & Shimakaze along with the figFIX Mutsu were on display, along with non KanColle figmas: most notably the figma and Plamax Yoshika from Strike Witches. Plus the Metal Gear Solid, Expelled from Paradise,  and Ghost in the Shell figmas! And we have KanColle Nendos too: Akitsushima and anime version Fubuki. Plus an announcement from Aoshima, they’ll be doing a figure of Akitsushima. Of course there were a (few) non-Kantai girls and boys. Most notably, Tomytec is making Ushio to Tora Nendoroids of Ushio Aotsuki and Tora. Kotobukiya brought a handful of figures from Rage of Bahamut, Shining Resonance, Aquarion Logos, Tales of Zestiria, and Mononoke. And last but not least, Aoshima is picking up a gorgeous garage kit of Kongou from Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova! [via Hobby Search’s Blog]

  • Alter and Kotobukiya regularly put out figures from the Tales of series, so it was an easy guess to predict that we’d get some Tales of Xillia 2 figures. What’s surprising, however, is that our first announcement is from Alter and it’s two boys: Ludger Will Kresnik, who is sculpted, and Julius Will Kresnik, who is just art at the moment. Personally, I have zero attachment to the characters so these are just two dudes in boring clothing standing around in super-uninspired poses. And I’m still full of resentment over a lack of Judith, sob. Alter, just give me Judith. Please. Or at least have one of these guys come with the cat from Xillia 2. [via chobin01 & mankichi69]
