Toy Fair 2014 Archive

  • Think Geek is known for making wacky, really out-there products that cater to the geek in all of us. And by “all of us” I of course mean “people reading this site”: I don’t think your grandma is going to want a Creeper iphone case. But hey, I don’t know her, maybe she’s a Minecraft kind of gal! The highlight of the booth was the lightup Tron hoodie, which was an April Fools item a few years ago. Now, it’s actually being made! There were also plush lego bricks (that will probably still find a way to hurt your feet if you step on them), tons of Star Wars goodies, and a whole lot more. Check it all out below the jump!

  • Bandai seems to be following in the path of Square-Enix and just snatching up every license that comes into their range of sight to make action figures from. Seriously, it’s kind of wacky to see Batman figures from them, especially since these are from the Injustice: Gods Among Us game. Well, I say “these” but right now there’s just Bats himself. And he looks surprisingly nice! I have never been a fan of the S.H.Figuarts line, but it seems like they have really stepped up their game in the past few years. Heck, the Sailor Moon girls and the Persona ones are practically on par with figmas–and they better be, for the prices they ask!

  • Way back at my first Toy Fair, our biggest assignment was an interview with David Horvath, the creator of Uglydoll. Sure, there was a lot of merchandise at their booth, but it’s shocking how much the company has grown since then! There are about a million variations of every Uglydoll, and some new ones rolled out this Toy Fair. The big announcement was Kiss-style Uglydolls. Yes, the band. Wacky, but they look so dang cute! Then we have little beady-eyed versions, which are both adorable but a little unsettling. That Ice Bat looks like he is going to come alive at night and eat your face. I’d advise you not to feed him after midnight, but let’s be honest: it’s always after midnight. The rules of that movie make no sense.

  • We already took a look at the (literal) Grumpy Cat this Toy Fair, but a few days later when the celebrity herself had departed, a new toy popped up in the space she once resided–a more real-life version of the fluffy grumpus! Like the Lil Bub plush, this is a more accurate rendition of Her Grumpiness, and is about as close as you are going to get to owning a Grumpy Cat of your own. And for those wondering about Grumpy Cat’s blind boxed figures–they are still in the prototype stage, so sadly we won’t see them for sale for a while. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we find out any new information!

  • It’s a nostalgia-splosion on the site today! Okay, so Naruto is more recent than Sailor Moon and Dragonball, but I still associate it with that “ahh, remember when anime was new and exciting and I wasn’t jaded and fed up with fanservice?” phase. Given the show’s huge popularity both in Japan and overseas, it’s no surprise that Bandai has picked up the license and is doing action figures from it! We’ve got Naruto in his Shippuden gear (and Shippuden still sounds like a Jewish holiday to me), along with… just kidding, it’s only Naruto! Though you know Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi are guaranteed to join the line. It’s just a matter of time.

  • DRAGON DRAGON, ROCK THE DRAGON DRAGON BALLLL ZZZZZ NYERR NYERR NYERR NYERR Ahem. Seriously, I can not write a Dragonball post without doing that it seems. And now it’s stuck in all your heads, bwahaha! Bandai seems devoted to hitting us in the face with the nostalgia train, what with Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z, staples of the Toonami lineup. At Toy Fair they had S.H.Figuarts and Figuarts Zero of Trunks, Goku, Cell, Frieza (or Freezer, tehe Japan), Vegeta, Krillin, Android 18, Piccolo, and enough Super Saiyans to keep your tv powered for hours. Check ’em all out in the gallery!

  • Do you ever look down at your phone and think “goodness, this poor fellow/lass/otherkin looks downright naked!” Well boy oh boy does Bandai have a solution for you. Hilariously, it’s underwear… for your phone! We even got a pair to test out, and they’re adorably geeky. They come in all sizes and shapes, and if you think underwear might be a bit too revealing for your modest device there’s some clothing… like Miku’s skirt! I wonder if we’ll get a Luka one, too?

  • Sailor Moon was my gateway drug into anime. When I was 5, my friend and I got our hands on some Sailor Moon paper dolls and played with them until they wore thin. And it was the first anime I ever watched: I distinctly remember my mom walking in the room and asking me why naked ladies were spinning around on the tv. So of course this flood of Sailor Moon merchandise warms my cold, dead heart, and Bluefin had a whole lot of Bandai’s new lineup at Toy Fair! We’ve seen the Figuarts ZERO Sailor Moon at Diamond’s booth, but they had her here too, along with the Figuarts Zero Sailor Mercury. And (almost) the whole S.H.Figuarts line, excluding Sailor Jupiter! Poor gas giants, always getting left out of the parties. Last but not least there’s also a full-scale replica of Sailor Moon’s want that I will definitely be buying so I can twirl around the house with it. Yes, I am an adult, why do you ask?

  • Squishables always have one of the happiest booths at any event. I mean, how can you be sad with all those little faces smiling at you? Plus, you know, you can squish all of them! They had a TON of new stuff on display this year, from the rather ordinary (the new Husky), to some awesome mythology-themed plushes (Cerberus, Unicorn Cupcakes, oh my!). While there was a whole lot of cute going on, my personal favorite was the Axolotl mini in the header. In fact… we liked him so much, he’s become part of our squishy family! And his name is Roxbury, in case you were wondering… because I’m sure you were. Check out his big, fluffy family after the jump!

  • Well, this was a surprise and a half! Squishable is working on a new line of art pillows called Squishable 2D. On hand were a few artist pillows as well as a few video game pillows, which appear to be a collaboration with Shifty Look. What excited me most though was that amazing thing in the background of the header there: Katamari! Katamari is one of my all time favorite games, and I even objectively proved for my video game design class that it is empirically the single most fun game of all time. What does the big Katamari look like though that Squishable also produces? Yeah, you can see where I, and apparently they are going with this as well and, let’s just say, I freaked out like a little girl when I found out. So yeah, lots of all around things I love: comfy pillows, video games, art, Katamari, Prince and Katamari Squishable hints everywhere… just roll me away now…
