Toy Fair 2016 Archive

  • We have seen quite a few things from DC’s Toy Fair booth already: the Suicide Squad statues, the Icons action figures, Amanda Conner’s Harley Quinns, the movie action figures, Batman Vs Superman stautes, the Batman the Animated Series line, and most importantly the Bombshells! But you know what all those are missing? Rainbow Batman figures, something we all need of course. And plushies of some of their cutest animal pals, including my favorite: Dex-Starr! Plus much more, which you can check out below.

  • By far my favorite statue line (from any company) is DC’s Bombshells. We’ve seen a lot of them over the years, and I’ve fallen harder for them as time has gone on. I just love the idea of pinup-type art of these classic superheores, done in a really elegant and inventive way. The focus on Toy Fair was on three of their newer girls: Raven, Powergirl, and Bumblebee (who is also the first black Bombshell!). I love how true they all are to character: Raven the slinky mage, Powergirl showing off her strength, Bumblebee all happy and perky. I want them all!

  • Sometimes I think that basically all of DC’s characters are iconic, then I remember characters like Rainbow Girl and think, “yeah, maybe not so much.” So of course their Icons line has everyone you would expect: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Swamp Thing, and even some villains like the Joker (of course!). Some of them seem a little less, um, iconic (Firestorm, really?), but the lineup looks great so far–if you like male heroes. Not many girls here, it seems.

  • You know what we need? More Batman Vs Superman figures. There’s definitely not enough of them on the market right now. But actually, jokes aside, most of what we’ve seen has been in statue form–there’s not a ton of action figures of them out there. Of course DC couldn’t just stand by and let that happen, so they’re adding them to their action figure line! Which has all sorts of new features like increased poseability and details. They’re kind of like mini Hot Toys, really! And it’ll include characters from many of their movies both new and old. Check ’em all out in the gallery.

  • I think only heartless monsters don’t like Batman the Animated Series. Just kidding, I’m sure there are lots of you and you all totally have hearts. But really, it’s just fabulous. I mean, where else do you get Robin in such goofy glasses. Probably a couple places, actually. So I was of course delighted to see a full lineup of TAS action figures at Toy Fair. There’s a pretty huge variety: superheroes, sidekicks, villains. Though I will admit what I really want is Huntress and Black Canary so I can recreate the amazing Birds of Prey moment from The Brave and the Bold.

  • With Suicide Squad all over the place, Harley Quinn is really having her day in the sun. Personally, I prefer… well, any Harley to SS Harley, so it was nice to see her in classic harlequin garb at Toy Fair! DC will be doing a series of Harley Quinn action figures based on the art of Amanda Conner. And each finished product will have a cute gimmick–like the squirrel will actually shoot things and the pizza is apparently going to smell like real pizza! Adorable. And slightly twisted, just like Harley.

  • With Batman Vs Superman on the horizon, we’re seeing figures from it from just about everyone. Heck, we even have them in Nendoroid form! And of course DC themselves will be bringing the heat as well with a statue line. We’ve got, of course, Wonder Woman, Superman, and two Batmans (armored and unarmored). More proof that Batman is truly the best superhero. I also have to admit that for a second there I thought Wondy was wearing denim short shorts–thankfully this is not the case.

  • There is no person in the world less excited for the Suicide Squad movie than me. I am at negative levels of excitement. So it’s really saying something when I tell you that even I was impressed by the lineup of Suicide Squad toys that DC has coming out this year. The whole team is here in absolutely insane detail–from super-accurate faces to crazy detailed bodies and outfits, this line is a collector’s dream. I’m tempted to get Deadshot just so I can pose Will Smith like he’s gonna shoot a bunch of anime girls. Because really, who doesn’t want that?

  • Everybody loves Mr. Sparkle, because he’s disrespectful to dirt! Isn’t it funny what snippets of media end up being enduringly popular? It’s always moments I’m sure the creators never expected to be sensationally popular, but that’s exactly what happened with Mr. Sparkle, the Japanese company logo that appeared quite briefly in The Simpsons. And while I knew Kidrobot was making Simpsons figures, I definitely would never have bet on a vinyl Mr. Sparkle. But here we are, with a shiny all-gold Mr. Sparkle to get your dishes sparkling and fresh. Or, you know, to look cute and goofy on your shelf.

  • I tend to have very mixed feelings about the Joker. I love almost all of his many permutations, but when I hate one (like The Killing Joke Joker or New 52 Joker) I really hate them. I mean, I certainly have bigger New 52 issues than the Joker (Wonder Woman’s new backstory, why?), but he’s certainly not my fave. Even if the whole peeling off his face thing did make for some cool panels. But, of course, lots of people love New 52 Joker! So it’s not very surprising that Kotobukiya added him to their New 52 Villains ArtFX+. And even I am almost won over by him: the pose is just so clever, with the knife showing but the gun hidden behind his back. His body looks almost broken, which is definitely fitting for his character: such odd angles! Check him out in full after the jump.
