At the tail end of last year, Good Smile Company unveiled the art for Racing Miku 2017 which is designed by Tony Taka. I find myself ordering less and less every month and in fact it takes a lot for any figure to interest me now, but I am always such a sucker for the Racing Miku line… and this year looks like it will be no exception! Tony Taka, Miku, butterfly wings, soft pastel colors? Yes please.
Of course we don’t just get the figure: there’s a figma and Nendoroid too! This might actually be the first time Tony’s art has been on a Nendoroid, since I can’t think of a single other. GSC was never on the Shining World hype train, after all. But oh my god does his style look adorable all chibi and fat! I hope that, unlike Snow Miku, they keep all the detail in her outfit because this could be a really spectacular Nendoroid.

So far, Stronger’s Maiko Vocaloid line has been totally on point. Their Miku, who just came out last month, was breathtakingly gorgeous, and they followed it up with Meiko & Kaito. We found out last year that Luka would be the next to join in, and of course her art is as pretty as you’d expect.
Now she’s all sculpted and even nicer than what I imagined! The branch is so elaborate… and will take up a lot of shelf space, but if she’s even half as nice as the finished Miku it’s totally worth it. Luka is my favorite Vocaloid so it’s great to see her getting so much love recently. I expect Rin & Len to follow shortly!

I think we can all agree that 2016 sucked. But the year is almost at an end, which means a fresh start for all of us! And a fresh start for yearly figure lines, too. Usually we have to wait until Wonder Festival for the new Racing Miku, but GSC feels so bad for all of us they’re giving us a little taste of the 2017 design already.
While I was quite smitten by 2016’s figure, I am even more excited for 2017’s. Because it’s Tony Taka!! Finally, dreams do come true. And it’s not just any Racing Miku, it’s a FANCY FAIRY RACING MIKU. 2017 can’t come fast enough.

Fans have been clamoring for a Snow Miku scale since basically her first Nendoroid. We’ve had a few repaints of figures with the Snow theme, but that doesn’t really count: I’ve been dying for an original, wintry Snow Miku for years. And it’s finally happening! Though I must admit, the final result is nothing like what I had pictured in my head.
That’s not a bad thing, though! GSC has come out with a really dynamic, unique-looking figure. I mean, she’s snowboarding on her own hair. Pretty intense. It’s also a more stylized, adult-looking Miku than her usual cutesy self. I’ve loved most of GSC/Max Factory’s more artistic Mikus and this one is no exception. Now we just need scales of all her yearly variants!

We saw what Good Smile Company & co and Vertex brought to Miyazawa Model, but of course a few others showed up as well! Though it seems like everyone else was limited to one or two new figures up their sleeves. Kotobukiya had just a handful of new stuff: Wilhelmina Braunschweig Ingenohl Friedeburg (why with this naming) from High School Fleet, aka “that KanColle ripoff” and…. Spike is finally painted!
Revolve didn’t have much, but they did have announcements for Rem & Ram from Re:Zero. Aoshima had a lovely Izetta from Shuumatsu no Izetta on display, and Medicom had out their Gary/Blue/whatever you want to call him. Pulchra announced two new Vocaloids: Yukari Yuzuki and… a different figure of Yukari. And let’s not forget about the wacky EVA Unit-01 action figure on display!

Back in September we got the reveal for Snow Miku 2017’s winning design, and I was cautiously optimistic. Sure, no space suit bunny, but the art was gorgeous and would make for a beautiful figure. We have the reveal for both the painted figma and Nendoroid now and my feelings are… shall we say, mixed.
At first glance, they’re lovely! The colors look gorgeous, the hair is beautiful, and the moon base for the figma is stunning. But if you take a close look, they are missing a LOT of the detail from the original art, mainly the starry sky pattern on her dress. Why would they include this design in the finals if they couldn’t/wouldn’t execute it in its entirety? Kind of disappointing. I’m still tempted though, because they do look so cute! The Nendoroid will retail for ¥5,500 and the figma for ¥6,000 with orders opening tonight on the GSC online shop.

When we first saw Racing Miku 2016’s design, I wasn’t the biggest fan. It’s a little busier than the Racing Mikus I love, and I thought the red and blue clashed a little But I quickly changed my tune when we saw the sculpt for Good Smile Company’s figure of her, because it was so enchanting and cute! I’m just smitten with that pose and all of the detailing.
She’s finally painted, and I’m even more in love. The coloring is bold and unusual, her face is adorable, and there are SO many details all over. Though some of them are a bit confusing–why is a sentient weight holding a can of Redbull? Truly a figure of many questions. She’s set for a September release and retails for ¥13,800, which is way less than I thought given her base and all the PVC her hair and umbrella need!

I was so excited about the theme announcement for Snow Miku 2017: space!? Yes please. And many of the potential designs were utterly fantastic. But of course, like always, I found the final 6 very lackluster. Except for space bunny Yukine, who I am gutted didn’t win. What is wrong with the voters?! How do you not pick that?!
Okay, Yukine aside, I’m actually not bummed about the final selection. Usually my least-favorite wins, but this year the one I liked the most got voted into figure history. Hooray? Guys, I can’t get over the bunny thing. I’m just… it’s a tragedy. #prayforYukine

It’s almost fall, and you know what that means–new season, new Prize Fair. They’re on the 45th already, if you can believe it! And like always, the big 4 (FuRyu, Taito, SEGA, & Banpresto) had all the upcoming prize figures out on display.
I always try to swear off prize figures, but like clockwork there are one or two that draw me back in. This time, funnily enough, it’s a collab I’ve basically ignored because I’m interested: the Madogatari figures. That Kiss-Shot in Homura garb, hnnng! There’s lots of other great stuff, and of course all the regulars (Evangelion, Miku, KanColle, Disney, Dragon Ball Z) were out in force. Check them all out in the gallery below!
